An image system and surface singularity solutions for potential flow past an elliptical cylinder

The Milne-Thomson circle theorem is extended to give a simplegeneral expression for the image system in an elliptical cylinderintroduced into an otherwise specified unbounded potential flowwhich contains no singularities in the region to be occupiedby the ellipse. This image system is used to obtain an expressionfor the corresponding source-sink surface singularity distributionon the ellipse, thus providing new benchmark test cases forsource-sink solutions as obtained numerically by a panel method.Several typical examples are given to illustrate the generaltheoretical approach.     

MRI evaluation of AIDS-related encephalopathy: toxoplasmosis vs. lymphoma

The spectrum of cranial MRI findings was evaluated in 113 patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, assessing lesion number, size, location, and configuration in association with the autopsy and/or biopsy results. Correlation of cranial MRI and CT was performed in 32 patients. MRI was shown to be superior in sensitivity of lesion detection demonstrating more lesions than CT in 14 studies (44%) and equivalent information in 18 studies (56%). In no case did CT demonstrate lesions not detected on MRI. We conclude that MRI should be the study of choice in evaluating AIDS-related encephalopathy. Multiple lesions that involve both deep gray matter and white matter suggest the possibility of CNS lymphoma. The "target" appearance on MRI is not helpful in distinguishing toxoplasmosis from lymphoma.     

Optimisation of cell design for activation analysis of flowing systems

A theoretical relationship between the half-life and activity of a radioisotope produced by neutron activation of a flowing system, the flow rate, and the irradiation, delay and counting volumes is developed. An expression is then obtained for the flow rate producing maximum activity of the radioisotope. Both expressions have been solved using a digital computer for a variety of half-lives, activities and combinations of irradiation, delay, and counting volumes. It has been shown that, for any given system, the activity as a product of the half-life and corresponding flow rate is independent of the half-life.     

The extraction of elements with cyclic solvents and its application to geochemical analysis

The extraction of the elements Zn, Cd, Hg, Ga, In, Tl, Sn, Pb, As, Sb and Bi into the solvents cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol, and cyclohexane from hydrochloric acid solutions, has been studied. Cyclohexanone is a more efficient but less selective extracting agent than cyclohexanol while cyclohexane has little extracting power. Solvent extraction of hydrochloric acid solutions of materials of geochemical interest into cyclohexanone has been used to enrich trace elements prior to spectrochemical analysis.
