Non-gravitating scalars and spacetime compactification

We discuss role of partially gravitating scalar fields, scalar fields whose energy–momentum tensors vanish for a subset of dimensions, in dynamical compactification of a given set of dimensions. We show that the resulting spacetime exhibits a factorizable geometry consisting of usual four-dimensional spacetime with full Poincaré invariance times a manifold of extra dimensions whose size and shape are determined by the scalar field dynamics. Depending on the strength of its coupling to the curvature scalar, the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the scalar field may or may not vanish. When its VEV is zero the higher-dimensional spacetime is completely flat and there is no compactification effect at all. On the other hand, when its VEV is nonzero the extra dimensions get spontaneously compactified. The compactification process is such that a bulk cosmological constant is utilized for curving the extra dimensions.     

The synthesis and catalytic properties of imidazolinium salts and their palladium(II) complexes

Three 1,3-dialkylimidazolinium chloride salts and their palladium(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and IR spectroscopy. The catalytic activities of the 1,3-dialkylimidazolinium chloride salts and their complexes in the Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions were investigated.     

The use of passive sampling to monitor spatial trends of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at an industrial city of Turkey

Ambient concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured using passive sampling technique at 49 sampling points in Kocaeli, an important industrial city in Turkey. Air samples were analyzed using thermal desorption (TD) and gas chromatography/flame ionization detectors (FID). Concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylenes, and o-xylene (BTEX), 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, n-propylbenzene, 3-ethyltoluene, and 4-ethyltoluene were investigated to determine their spatial distribution and source apportionment. Concentrations of ΣBTEX ranged from 3.7 to 335.5 μg/m³. Among all the VOC species, m/p-xylene and toluene have the highest concentration. The spatial distributions for BTEX concentrations showed characteristic patterns: high concentrations were typically found along major roads, city centres, and near industrial plants. Pollution sources potentially affecting concentrations were identified using statistical analyses. The results of factor analysis indicated that vehicle exhaust and industrial activity were the predominant emission sources of the VOCs.

Extended Rectifying Curves in Minkowski 3-Space

In this paper, we consider nonhelical rectifying curves using the any orthonormal moving frame in Minkowski 3?space. Then, we give some relations between nonhelical rectifying curves and their Darboux vectors. Also, we demonstrate that the modified Darboux vectors of the curves are rectifying curves. So, this study is a general expression for the known rectifying curves. In the last section, we give some examples and draw their pictures.     

Synthesis, characterization and catalytic behavior of functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 with various organo-silanes

Mesoporous silica SBA-15 has been synthesized and functionalized by one-step synthesis method to widen their various application possibilities. In this study, phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS), 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and trimethoxypropylsilane (TMPS) were used as silane precursors for the functionalization, and after treated with HCl solution, their catalytic activities were evaluated in the lactic acid-methanol esterification. The presence of anchoring of functional groups on SBA-15 was proved by XRD, FT-IR, BET surface area and pore size distributions. Good catalytic activity was observed especially for SBA-15-SO(3)H-MPTMS, and the catalytic activity order was determined as follows: SBA-15-SO(3)H-MPTMS>SBA-15-TMPS>SBA-15-PTMS, which is directly associated with the surface area, pore size and pore volume. As compared with homogeneous catalyst, SBA-15-SO(3)H-MPTMS heterogeneous catalyst shows remarkable performance, such as separation, recovery and reusability.     

Active ruthenium‐(N‐heterocyclic carbene) complexes for hydrogenation of ketones

Four ruthenium‐N‐heterocyclic carbene complexes ( 3–6 ) have been prepared and the new compounds characterized by C, H, N analyses, ¹H‐NMR and ¹³C‐NMR. The reduction of ketones to alcohols via transfer hydrogenation was achieved with catalytic amounts of complexes 3–6 in the presence of t‐BuOK. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
