Hall probe microscopy has been used to image vortex-antivortex molecules induced in superconducting Pb films by the stray fields from square arrays of magnetic dots. We have directly observed spontaneous vortex-antivortex pairs and studied how they interact with added free (anti)fluxons in an applied magnetic field. We observe a variety of phenomena arising from competing symmetries which either drive added antivortices to join antivortex shells around dots or stabilize the translationally symmetric antivortex lattice between the dots. Added vortices annihilate antivortex shells, leading first to a stable "nulling state" with no free fluxons and then, at high densities, to vortex shells around the dots stabilized by the asymmetric antipinning potential. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with Ginzburg-Landau calculations.  相似文献

A novel way to produce ultrathin transparent carbon layers on tin‐doped indium oxide (ITO) substrates is developed. The ITO surface is coated with cellulose nanofibrils (from sisal) via layer‐by‐layer electrostatic binding with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) or PDDAC acting as the binder. The cellulose nanofibril‐PDDAC composite film is then vacuum‐carbonised at 500 °C. The resulting carbon films are characterised by atomic force microscopy (AFM), small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), and Raman methods. Smooth carbon films with good adhesion to the ITO substrate are formed. The electrochemical characterisation of the carbon films is based on the oxidation of hydroquinone and the reduction of benzoquinone in aqueous phosphate buffer media. A modest effect of the cellulose nanofibril‐PDDAC film on the rate of electron transfer is observed. The effect of the film on the rate of electron transfer after carbonisation is more dramatic. For a 40‐layer cellulose nanofibril‐PDDAC film after carbonisation a two‐order of magnitude change in the rate of electron transfer occurs presumably due to a better interaction of the hydroquinone/benzoquinone system with the electrode surface.  相似文献

Stable-isotope DNA probing is a culture-independent technique that may provide a link between function and phylogeny of active microorganisms. The technique has been used in association with 13C substrates while here we evaluate feasibility and limitations of 15N-DNA stable-isotope probing (SIP) using labelled and unlabelled pure microbial cultures or soil extracts. Our results showed that (15)N-DNA probing is feasible for cultures as well as soil samples. Limitations of 15N-DNA-SIP are (a) the need for relatively large quantities of DNA to visualise bands (although molecular resolution is much higher) and (b) 15N-DNA enrichment needed to ideally be >50 at%; however, this requirement can be lowered to approx. 40 atom% 15N with pure cultures using a modified CsCl centrifugation method (140K g for 69 h). These advances in 15N-DNA-SIP methodology open new opportunities to trace active microbial populations utilising specific N substrates in situ.  相似文献

We exploit the ability to precisely control the magnetic domain structure of perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/Pt trilayers to fabricate artificial domain wall arrays and study their transport properties. The scaling behavior of this model system confirms the intrinsic domain wall origin of the magnetoresistance, and systematic studies using domains patterned at various angles to the current flow are excellently described by an angular-dependent resistivity tensor containing perpendicular and parallel domain wall resistivities. We find that the latter are fully consistent with Levy-Zhang theory, which allows us to estimate the ratio of minority to majority spin carrier resistivities, rho downward arrow/rho upward arrow approximately 5.5, in good agreement with thin film band structure calculations.  相似文献

Colorectal cancer includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix and affects around 30?000 people in England each year. Maximizing health benefits for patients with colorectal cancer requires consideration of costs and outcomes across the whole service. In an era of scarce healthcare resources, there is a need to consider not only whether technologies and services may be considered clinically effective, but also whether they are cost-effective, that is, whether they represent value for money for the health service. Through the development of a whole disease model, it is possible to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a range of options for service development consistently within a common framework. Discrete event simulation has been used to model the complete colorectal cancer patient pathway from patient presentation through to referral and diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, potential recurrence, treatment of metastases and end-of-life care. This simulation model has been used to examine the potential cost-effectiveness of different options for change across the entire colorectal cancer pathway. This paper provides an empirical demonstration of the potential application of modelling entire disease areas to inform clinical policy and resource allocation decision-making.  相似文献

Scanning Hall probe microscopy (SHPM) is a novel scanned probe magnetic imaging technique whereby the stray fields at the surface of a sample are mapped with a sub-micron semiconductor heterostructure Hall probe. In addition an integrated scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) or atomic force microscope (AFM) tip allows the simultaneous measurement of the sample topography, which can then be correlated with magnetic images. SHPM has several advantages over alternative methods; it is almost completely non-invasive, can be used over a very wide range of temperatures (0.3–300 K) and magnetic fields (0–7 T) and yields quantitative maps of the z-component of magnetic induction. The approach is particularly well suited to low temperature imaging of vortices in type II superconductors with very high signal:noise ratios and relatively high spatial resolution (>100 nm). This paper will introduce the design principles of SHPM including the choice of semiconductor heterostructure for different measurement conditions as well as surface tracking and scanning mechanisms. The full potential of the technique will be illustrated with results of vortex imaging studies of three distinct superconducting systems: (i) vortex chains in the “crossing lattices” regime of highly anisotropic cuprate superconductors, (ii) vortex–antivortex pairs spontaneously nucleated in ferromagnetic-superconductor hybrid structures, and (iii) vortices in the exotic p-wave superconductor Sr2RuO4 at milliKelvin temperatures.  相似文献

We have imaged interacting crossing pancake vortex (PV) and Josephson vortex (JV) lattices in highly anisotropic Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta) single crystals under tilted magnetic fields. The dependence of vortex structures on in-plane field is in good quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions, yielding an almost temperature-independent anisotropy parameter of gamma=640+/-25. We directly confirm that the PV/JV attraction arises from small PV displacements in the presence of JV supercurrents and demonstrate how the existence of quenched disorder leads to indirect JV pinning and dynamic vortex fragmentation.  相似文献

We study crossing vortices in strongly anisotropic Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta single crystals. Using scanning Hall probe microscopy and Bitter decoration techniques, we find an asymmetry of magnetic field profiles produced by pancake vortices (PVs), which are interacting with Josephson vortices (JVs), near the surface of the crystal. We attribute the observed asymmetry to a substantial tilt (14-18 degrees) of PV stacks, which is produced by the torque due to the surface currents and JVs. We calculate the tilt angle and obtain agreement with experimental data when the irreversible in-plane magnetization is included. A further refinement to the model is considered which accounts for a reduction in the PV stack line tension near the sample surface.  相似文献
