Chromatographic purification of the alcoholic extract from the aerial parts of the Saudi plant Nuxia oppositifolia (Hochst.), Benth., resulted in five isolated phenolic compounds. Two flavones, hispidulin (1) and jaceosidin (2), and the phenylethanoid glycosides, verbascoside (3), isoverbascoside (4), and conandroside (5), were identified and their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses. The insecticidal activity of compounds 1 and 2, in addition to 11 compounds isolated in a previous research (6–16), was evaluated against the Yellow Fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Four compounds displayed adulticidal activity with LD50 values of 2–2.3 μg/mosquito. Free radical scavenging properties of the plant extracts and compounds (1–5) were evaluated by measuring the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate radical cation (ABTS•+) scavenging activity. All compounds exhibited notable activity, compared with the positive control, l-Ascorbic acid. This study suggests that N. oppositifolia could be a promising source of secondary metabolites, some with lethal adulticidal effect against Ae. aegypti. 相似文献

Titration microcalorimetry is used to study the influences of iodide, bromide, and chloride counterions on the aggregation of vesicle-forming 1-methyl-4-(2-pentylheptyl)pyridinium halide surfactants. Formation of vesicles by these surfactants was characterised using transmission electron microscopy. When the counterion is changed at 303 K through the series iodide, bromide, to chloride, the critical vesicular concentration (cvc) increases and the enthalpy of vesicle formation changes from exo- to endothermic. With increase in temperature to 333 K, vesicle formation becomes strongly exothermic. Increasing the temperature leads to a decrease in enthalpy and entropy of vesicle formation for all three surfactants. However the standard Gibbs energy for vesicle formation is, perhaps surprisingly, largely unaffected by an increase in temperature, as a consequence of a compensating change in both standard entropy and standard enthalpy of vesicle formation. Interestingly, standard isobaric heat capacities of vesicle formation are negative, large in magnitude but not strikingly dependent on the counterion. We conclude that the driving force for vesicle formation can be understood in terms of overlap of the thermally labile hydrophobic hydration shells of the alkyl chains. To determine if a correlation exists between mercury concentrations in lichens and wood from tree cores, tree core and lichen samples were taken from sites under mercury advisories and analyzed for mercury using a Bacharach 50B Mercury Analyzer System employing the Manual Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption EPA method 7471A. Wood from tree cores was dated using tree ring data. Wood samples from the cores were analyzed for various depths in the tree core (periods of time) to determine if variations occur throughout the cores. Preliminary data indicate that a strong correlation exists between mercury concentrations in tree core and lichen samples. Samples were analyzed for the 6-month period of summer 2003–winter 2004. A correlation coefficient of 0.882 was found between the tree core and lichen data sets. The derived correlations were used to estimate concentrations of mercury in tree rings for sites in lichen samples which were previously analyzed. These predicted values compared favorably to recently determined concentrations of Hg in tree cores. The strong correlation between lichen and tree core Hg concentrations suggests similar uptake mechanism for the two types of biota. 相似文献
