Water-assisted self-assembly of harmonic single and triple helices in a polymeric coordination complex

A novel two-dimensional coordination polymer containing infinite, coherently pitched single and triple helical motifs is formed by the self-assembly of Cd2+, succinate, water and a bipyridyl ligand.     

The indole side chain of tryptophan as a versatile pi-donor

Single-armed, 15- and 18-membered lariat ether receptor systems having indolylethyl side arms bind Na+ and K+ in the ring. The indole residue serves as a pi-donor to the ring-bound cation. Whether the five- or six-membered ring interacts most directly with Na+ or K+ depends on whether the sidearm is attached to indole's 3- or 5-position. This suggests that structural as well as electronic factors are important in pi-complexation of alkali metal cations.     

Sensitivity and specificity of the BAX for screening/Listeria monocytogenes assay: internal validation and independent laboratory study

In this study to certify the BAX for Screening/Listeria monocytogenes assay (DuPont Qualicon, Wilmington, DE), an internal evaluation was conducted on 16 food types that were simultaneously analyzed with the BAX system (BAX), and the ISO method for the detection of L. monocytogenes (ISO). No statistically significant difference in performance between the BAX and ISO methods was observed. Inclusivity/exclusivity testing showed that the BAX system was able to detect 97 of 97 (100%) of L. monocytogenes strains tested. None of 56 other Listeria species or non-Listeria tested gave a reproducible positive BAX result. Ruggedness testing demonstrated that performance of the assay was not affected by reasonable variability in the operating parameters. BAX was then submitted for independent laboratory validation. In this phase, BAX was compared with standard culture methods for the detection of L. monocytogenes in chicken (USDA-FSIS), crab meat (BAM), and milk (AOAC). This study validated product claims of sensitivity and specificity >98% in accordance with AOAC Performance Tested Method requirements.     

Characterization of supramolecular (H2O)18 water morphology and water-methanol (H2O)15(CH3OH)3 clusters in a novel phosphorus functionalized trimeric amino acid host

Phosphorus functionalized trimeric alanine compounds (l)- and (d)-P(CH(2)NHCH(CH(3))COOH)(3) 2 are prepared in 90% yields by the Mannich reaction of Tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine 1 with (l)- or (d)- Alanine in aqueous media. The hydration properties of (l)-2 and (d)-2 in water and water-methanol mixtures are described. The crystal structure analysis of (l)-2.4H(2)O, reveals that the alanine molecules pack to form two-dimensional bilayers running parallel to (001). The layered structural motif depicts two closely packed monolayers of 2 each oriented with its phosphorus atoms projected at the center of the bilayer and adjacent monolayers are held together by hydrogen bonds between amine and carboxylate groups. The water bilayers are juxtaposed with the H-bonded alanine trimers leading to 18-membered (H(2)O)(18) water rings. Exposure of aqueous solution of (l)-2 and (d)-2 to methanol vapors resulted in closely packed (l)-2 and (d)-2 solvated with mixed water-methanol (H(2)O)(15)(CH(3)OH)(3) clusters. The O-O distances in the mixed methanol-water clusters of (l)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH and (d)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH (O-O(average) = 2.857 A) are nearly identical to the O-O distance observed in the supramolecular (H(2)O)(18) water structure (O-O(average) = 2.859 A) implying the retention of the hydrogen bonded structure in water despite the accommodation of hydrophobic methanol groups within the supramolecular (H(2)O)(15)(CH(3)OH)(3) framework. The O-O distances in (l)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH and (d)-2.3H(2)O.CH(3)OH and in (H(2)O)(18) are very close to the O-O distance reported for liquid water (2.85 A).

Polymer coatings on steel substrates: An infrared spectroscopic study of temperature effects

Polymer coatings on steel substrates were analyzed by reflectance/absorbance infrared spectroscopy. Initial studies were performed ex-situ on samples which had been cured at a variety of temperatures on two different substrates. Further studies were done in-situ under both air and nitrogen atmospheres. The two substrates studied were untreated cold-rolled steel and cold-rolled steel with a conversion coating of zinc phosphate. Changes in the spectra of the phosphate conversion layer correlated well with anti-corrosion properties. Mechanisms of degradation and cure could be determined from the in-situ studies (1).     

Microporosity of a Guanidinium Organodisulfonate Hydrogen‐Bonded Framework

Guanidinium organosulfonates (GSs) are a large and well‐explored archetypal family of hydrogen‐bonded organic host frameworks that have, over the past 25 years, been regarded as nonporous. Reported here is the only example to date of a conventionally microporous GS host phase, namely guanidinium 1,4‐benzenedisulfonate ( p ‐G₂BDS ). p ‐G₂BDS is obtained from its acetone solvate, AcMe@ G₂BDS , by single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal (SC‐SC) desolvation, and exhibits a Type I low‐temperature/pressure N₂ sorption isotherm (SA_BET=408.7(2) m² g^?1, 77 K). SC‐SC sorption of N₂, CO₂, Xe, and AcMe by p ‐G₂BDS is explored under various conditions and X‐ray diffraction provides a measurement of the high‐pressure, room temperature Xe and CO₂ sorption isotherms. Though p ‐G₂BDS is formally metastable relative to the “collapsed”, nonporous polymorph, np ‐G₂BDS , a sample of p ‐G₂BDS survived for almost two decades under ambient conditions. np ‐G₂BDS reverts to zCO₂@ p ‐G₂BDS or yXe@ p ‐G₂BDS (y,z=variable) when pressure of CO₂ or Xe, respectively, is applied.
