Zinc polyoxometalate on activated carbon: an efficient catalyst for selective oxidation of alcohols with hydrogen peroxide

[PW₁₁ZnO₃₉]^5? was immobilized on activated carbon and characterized using Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and elemental analysis techniques. Effective oxidation of various alcohols with hydrogen peroxide was performed in the presence of this catalyst. Easy separation of the catalyst from the reaction mixture, cheapness, high activity and selectivity, stability as well as retained activity in subsequent catalytic cycles make this supported catalyst suitable for small‐scale synthesis. Rank of quantized universal enveloping algebras and modular functions

We compute an intrinsic rank invariant for quasitriangular Hopf algebras in the case of general quantum groupsU _q (g). As a function ofq the rank has remarkable number theoretic properties connected with modular covariance and Galois theory. A number of examples are treated in detail, including rank (U _q (su(3))) and rank (U _q (e ₈)). We briefly indicate a physical interpretation as relating Chern-Simons theory with the theory of a quantum particle confined to an alcove ofg.     

Headspace solvent microextraction of trihalomethane compounds into a single drop

Headspace solvent microextraction (HSME) into a single drop is developed for the determination of six trihalomethanes, CH2Cl2, CHCl3, C4H9Cl, CCl4, C2HCl3, and C2Cl4, in aqueous solution. A drop of benzyl alcohol containing bromoform, as an internal standard, is used for extraction. The analytes are extracted by suspending a 3-microL drop directly from the needle of a microsyringe. The needle passes through the septum of a vessel, and the needle tip appears above the surface of the solution. After the prescribed extraction time, the drop is drawn back into the syringe. The syringe is then removed, and its content is injected directly into a gas chromatography column for analysis. The main parameters affecting the HSME process, such as stirring speed, microdrop volume, sample solution temperature, microsyringe needle temperature, sample volume, solution pH, extracting solvent, and ionic strength of the solution, are studied. Also, the linear range and precision of the method are examined.     

Selective Acetylation of Alcohols and Amines with Ethyl Acetate in the Presence of H<Subscript>6</Subscript>[PMo<Subscript>9</Subscript>V<Subscript>3</Subscript>O<Subscript>40</Subscript>] as the Catalyst

Summary. Acetylation of various alcohols and benzyl amine was tested in the presence of H₆[PMo₉V₃O₄₀], a mixed addenda heteropolyacid, in ethyl acetate under reflux condition. Phenols and anilines are not affected under the reaction conditions. Selective transestrification of alcohols can be achieved in the presence of phenol and aniline derivatives using this method.     

Kinetic studies on the solvolysis and axial ligand substitutions of bis-triphenylphosphine(cyclohexane-1,2-dione-dioximato)ruthenium(II) in non-aqueous solvents

Kinetic studies of ligand substitutions of the six-coordinated Ru^II pseudo-macrocyclic complex [Ru(CHDH)₂- (PPh₃)₂] (CHDH=cyclohexanedione-dioximato) have been spectrophotometrically investigated in a variety of solvents and at 70, 80, 85 and 90°C. The reactions studied are of the form:[(PPh₃)Ru(CHDH)₂(PPh₃)] + L =[(PPh₃)Ru(CHDH)₂L] + PPH₃ where L is imidazole, pyridine, piperidine or thiophene or a solvent molecule (PhCl, PhMe, MeCN, DMSO or DMF). The solvolysis reactions with chlorobenzene and toluene proceed to an equilibrium position favoring the bis-triphenylphosphine complex. All other reactions proceed to completion. From a mechanistic point of view the reactions were found to proceed through the formation of a five coordinate intermediate that possesses little or no discriminating ability towards the incoming nucleophiles. The rate data were thus interpreted in terms of a dissociative (D) or dissociative interchange (Id) mechanism. Activation parameters H and S are reported. Preliminary studies on the solvatochromic behavior of [Ru(CHDH)₂(PPh₃)₂] and the corresponding mixed complexes are discussed.     

A convenient and regioselective oxidative bromination of electron-rich aromatic rings using potassium bromide and benzyltriphenylphosphonium peroxymonosulfate under nearly neutral reaction conditions

Regioselective oxidative bromination of electron-rich aromatic rings has been studied using potassium bromide as a bromine source in the presence of benzyltriphenylphosphonium peroxymonosulfate as oxidant under nearly neutral reaction conditions. In most cases we obtained monobrominated derivatives regioselectively and in good to high yields without the aid of strong acids.     

The reactivity, as electrogenerated bases, of chiral and achiral phenazine radical-anions, including application in asymmetric deprotonation

Radical-anions, electrochemically generated in aprotic solvent from C(2) symmetric homochiral phenazine derivatives, act as chiral electrogenerated bases (EGBs) in the desymmetrisation by selective deprotonation of a prochiral epoxide (3,4-epoxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide); the anion produced is trapped by mesitoic anhydride. The phenazines may be recovered in high yield by air oxidation. Enantiomeric excesses are modest (8-34%) but this is to our knowledge the first demonstration of such stereoselective electrochemically-initiated deprotonation. The reactivity of phenazine radical-anions as EGBs has also been explored by measurements of the rates of proton transfer; the prochiral epoxide was found to have a kinetic acidity similar to that of the methyltriphenylphosphonium cation.     

Magic angle spinning29Si and27Al NMR study of mordenite dealumination

Magic angle spinning²⁹Si NMR presents a rapid qualitative method of assessing the degree of dealumination of sodium mordenite modified by acid leaching and heat treatment. A quantitative determination of the²⁹Si coordination sphere is hampered by the overlap of chemical shift ranges for Si?O?Al and Si?O?H species. MAS²⁷Al NMR indicates the presence of octahedrally coordinated Al in interstitial sites in all treated samples. On treating mordenite samples at high temperatures (～700°C) much of the Al becomes invisible to the NMR experiment because of its location in sites of low symmetry and large quadrupole coupling constant.     

CuSO<Subscript>4</Subscript> as a Mild,Green, and Efficient Catalyst for the One-pot Conversion of <Emphasis Type="Italic">THP</Emphasis> Ethers to Acetates

Summary. An efficient direct conversion of THP ethers into the corresponding acetates was achieved with acetic anhydride in the presence of CuSO₄ · 5H₂O as an available and green catalyst in high yields.
