Effect of genesis on the properties and hydrogen reducibility of NiO-ZnO mixed oxides

The physico-chemical properties and reactivity tested by hydrogen reduction have been studied for two series of NiO-ZnO mixed oxides of various composition. The solid nickel oxide or zinc oxide in interaction with the solution of nitrate of the second component were used as the precursors in each series. The differences in some physico-chemical parameters of the samples in both series were correlated with their reduction behaviour, followed both in iso- and non-isothermal regime. Moreower, the influence of various factors modifying the reactivity of mixed oxides was also investigated and the results were compared with those obtained from earlier studied analogous systems of quite different origin.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Multiple-scattering-theory analysis of XANES spectra of SO2 adsorbed on Cu(100)

The sulphur K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of SO₂ multilayer and of SO₂ submonolayer adsorbed on Cu(100) are analysed. It is found that the dominant spectral features are of a molecular origin. The results support earlier findings that the SO₂ molecule stands perpendicular to the surface. Use of non-selfconsistent potentials does not lead to a good quantitative agreement between theory and experiment.     

Vortices in the superconducting transition of the 2+1 Abelian Higgs model

We study the phase transitions to the Higgs phase of the finite temperature 2+1 dimensional Abelian Higgs model in terms of Ginzburg-Landau vortices. We find that vorticity is a good order parameter which allows us to determine the order of the transitions.     

Automated derivatization for on-line solid-phase extraction-gas chromatography; phenolic compounds

An automated system for derivaatization was coupled on-line with solid-phase extraction-gas-chromatography (SPE-GC). The system was optimized for the determination of phenol and chlorinated phenols in aqueous samples. The test analytes were acetylated with acetic anhydride; proper buffering of the sample was a critical factor. Next, the phenol acetates were enriched on a SPE cartridge and transferred to a GC; two appraoaches were studied. In the first approach, the derivatives were enriched on disposable C18 cartridges (ASPEC type) and desorbed with methylacetate. Aan aliquot of the final eluate was injected on-line the GC by means of a loop-type interface. In the second approach, trace enrichment was performed on 10 × 2 mm i.d. LC-type precolumn packed with polystyrenedivinylbenzene copolymer (PLRP-S) this precolumn was dried with a mitrogen purge and the phenol acetates were desorbed with ethyl acetate which was injectedon-line into the retention gap of the GC under partially concurrent solvent evaporation (PCSE) conditions. The Derivatization-SPE-GC system which was based on the loop-type interface has the advantage of simplicity and easy operation, the main drawback is the impossibility to determine phenol acetates which elute prior to trichlorophenol acetates. With the derivatization-SPE-GC approach using PCSE-based desorption, even the most volatile analyte of the test series, phenol acetate, can be determined successfully. The entire procedure, including the derivatization step, was fully automated and integrated in one set-up. The precision data for the integrated on-line derivatization-SP-FID system were fully satisfactory, with RSD values of 1–12 % at the 1 μg/1 level. When a sample volume of 2.2 ml was analyzed, The detection limits for the chlorinated phenol acetates were in the 0.1–0.3 μg/1 range.     

Spectroscopy and quantum chemical modeling reveal a predominant contribution of excitonic interactions to the bathochromic shift in alpha-crustacyanin, the blue carotenoprotein in the carapace of the lobster Homarus gammarus

To resolve the molecular basis of the coloration mechanism of alpha-crustacyanin, we used (13)C-labeled astaxanthins as chromophores for solid-state (13)C NMR and resonance Raman spectroscopy of [6,6',7,7']-(13)C(4) alpha-crustacyanin and [8,8',9,9',10,10',11,11',20,20']-(13)C(10) alpha-crustacyanin. We complement the experimental data with time-dependent density functional theory calculations on several models based on the structural information available for beta-crustacyanin. The data rule out major changes and strong polarization effects in the ground-state electron density of astaxanthin upon binding to the protein. Conformational changes in the chromophore and hydrogen-bond interactions between the astaxanthin and the protein can account only for about one-third of the total bathochromic shift in alpha-crustacyanin. The exciton coupling due to the proximity of two astaxanthin chromophores is found to be large, suggesting that aggregation effects in the protein represent the primary source of the color change.     

Controlling the agglomeration of anisotropic Ru nanoparticles by the microwave-polyol process

A rapid polyol process for the synthesis of ruthenium nanoparticles was developed using microwave irradiation. A colloidal solution of monodispersed anisotropic Ru metal nanoparticles (mean particle size 2-6 nm) with different aspect ratios was obtained first. Particles with different degrees of agglomeration have also been synthesized using monodisperse particles as seeds and PVP (poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) as the stabilization reagent. The stabilization mechanisms of different protective reagents were studied by UV-vis spectra. The HRTEM images indicated that dendritic particles formed by controlling agglomeration consisted of single-crystal domains with a random crystalline orientation.     

A new Co(2)(CO8-mediated tandem [5 + 1]/[2 + 2 + 1]-cycloaddition reaction: a one-pot synthesis of tricyclic delta-lactones from cis-epoxy ene-ynes

In the presence of Co2(CO)8 and CO, cis-epoxyalkynes bearing a tether olefin undergo a tandem [5 + 1]/[2 + 2 + 1]-cycloaddition to give tricyclic delta-lactones efficiently in a one-pot operation. The reaction mechanism is proposed to involve a cobalt-coordinated cyclic allene species.
