Portable and Automatic Mössbauer Analysis

A portable Mössbauer spectrometer, developed for extraterrestrial applications, opens up new industrial applications of MBS. But for industrial applications, an available tool for fast data analysis is also required, and it should be easy to handle. The analysis of Mössbauer spectra and their parameters is a barrier for the popularity of this wide-applicable spectroscopic technique in industry. Based on experience, the analysis of a Mössbauer spectrum is time-consuming and requires the dedication of a specialist. However, the analysis of Mössbauer spectra, from the fitting to the identification of the sample phases, can be faster using by genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. Industrial applications are very specific ones and the data analysis can be performed using these algorithms. In combination with an automatic analysis, the Mössbauer spectrometer can be used as a probe instrument which covers the main industrial needs for an on-line monitoring of its products, processes and case studies. Some of these real industrial applications will be discussed.     

Radiochemical solvent extraction method for the determination of Cd and Hg using thionalide as a single reagent

A radiochemical solvent extraction method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of submicrogram amounts of Cd and Hg using^115mCd and²⁰³Hg tracers respectively and thionalide as a single complexing reagent. Hg was determined by 0.05% thionalide in ethyl methyl ketone (EMK) at pH 8.5, masking Cd with 0.1M KCN. From the aqueous phase Cd was demasked using formal-dehyde-acetic acid, pH adjusted to 9.5 and extracted into 0.05% thionalide in chloroform. The method is simple, fast and yields accurate results.     

Studies on the blends of cardanol-based epoxidized novolac resin and CTPB

Cardanol-based novolac-type phenolic resins were synthesized with different mole ratios of cardanol-to-formaldehyde, viz., 1:0.6, 1:0.7, and 1:0.8. These novolac resins were epoxidized with molar excess of epichlorohydrin at 120 °C in basic medium. The epoxidized novolac resins were, separately, blended with different weight ratios of carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene liquid rubber ranging between 0-25 wt% with an interval of 5 wt%. All the blends were cured at 150 °C with 40 wt% polyamide. The formation of various products during the curing of blend samples has been studied by Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopic analysis. The tensile strength and elongation-at-break of the cured samples increased up to 15 wt% in the blend and decreased thereafter. This blend sample was also found to be most thermally stable system. The blend morphology, studied by scanning electron microscopy analysis, was finally correlated with the structural and property changes in the blends.     

Synthesis and spectral studies on nickel(II) complexes of amide group-containing ligands

Summary Complexes of nickel(II) with N-(2-carboxyphenyl)benzamide (CPBH), 2-amino-N-(2-carboxyphenyl)benzamide (ACPBH), N-isoxazolyl benzamide (IB), N-anilinobenzamide (AB), N-(2-pyridyl)-3-carboxypropanamide (PCPA) and N-(2-pyridyl)-2-carboxybenzamide (PCBA) have been isolated and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements, thermal studies, i.r. and electronic spectral studies. The electrochemical behaviour of some complexes has also been investigated.     

Iron(III) complexes of 2-acetylpyridine-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazones: Magnetic,E.s.r. and spectral studies

Summary Iron(III) complexes of 2-acetylpyridine-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (LH) with the general formulae FeLX₂ (X = Cl, Br, NO₃ or SCN) and FeLSO₄ have been prepared and characterised by elemental analysis and by magnetic measurements in the polycrystalline state in the 77–298 K range and by electronic, i.r. and e.s.r. spectra. The FeLX₂ species (X = Cl, NCS or NO₃) are square pyramidal of intermediate spin-state (S=3/2) with an⁴ A ₂ ground state. The magnetic behaviour of FeLSO₄ is commensurate with high order effects coupled with antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. FeLBr₂ is a spin-free dimer involving bromine bridging between two FeLBr₂ square pyramids. However, the low-spin species [FeL(DMF)₃]²⁺ exists in dimethylformamide solution.     

Correlation of isomer shift and quadrupole splitting and the sign of EFG

Mössbauer isomer shift // and quadrupole splitting /E_Q/ values in a series of isostructural compounds correlate well to give linear relationship provided the sign of electric field gradient /EFG/ is assigned to the E_Q. The correlation has been used in predicting the sign of EFG for some monosubstituted pentacyanoferrate/II/ complexes. Usefulness of such correlations and its limitations are presented.     

Titrimetric estimation of phosphate, molybdate, tungstate and sulphate with lead nitrate solution, using 1,2-naphthoquinone-2-semicarbazone-4-sulphonic acid (NQS-4S) and 1,2-naphthoquinone-2-thiosemicarbazone-4-sulphonic acid (NQTS-4S) as visual indicators

The use of 1,2-naphthoquinone-2-semicarbazone-4-sulphonic acid and 1,2-naphtho-quinone-2-thiosemicarbazone-4-sulphoic acid as indicators in the titrimetric estimation of phosphate, molybdate, tungstate and sulphate with lead has been examined. The precision, accuracy and applicability of the methods have been evaluated.     

On the photometric determination of trivalent rhodium with eriochromecyanine RC

Summary Eriochromecyanine RC has been used as chromogenic reagent for the photometric determination of rhodium(III) on a micro scale. A coloured Rh(III)-ECRC chelate with _max 530 nm at pH 4.0 (25°C) is formed. A detailed study has been made concerning to characteristics, composition and stability of the chelate. Standard deviation was ±1.17%.

Zusammenfassung Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung über die Zusammensetzung und Stabilität des Komplexes werden mitgeteilt. Das Absorptionsmaximum liegt bei 530 nm (pH 4,0; 25°C). Bestimmungen konnten mit einer Standardabweichung von ±1,17% durchgeführt werden.

     

Investigation of the reaction products of 5-amino-1,3-disubstituted-pyrazoles with aromatic aldehydes. synthesis of new fluorinated 1,3,4-trisubstituted-4H-pyrazolo[3,4-e][1,4]thiazepin-7-ones

The condensation products of 5-amino-1,3-disubstituted-pyrazoles with aromatic aldehydes were identified as 2,4-dihydro-2,5-diphenyl-4-(phenylmethylene)-3H-pyrazol-5-imine derivatives Treatment of these products with mercaptoacetic acid gave new fluorine containing 1H-pyrazolo[3,4-e][1,4]thiazepin-7-ones.
