The phase separation process in a critical mixture of polydimethylsiloxane and polyethylmethylsiloxane (PDMS/PEMS, a system with an upper critical solution temperature) was investigated by time-resolved light scattering during continuous quenches from the one-phase into the two-phase region. Continuous quenches were realized by cooling ramps with different cooling rates kappa. Phase separation kinetics is studied by means of the temporal evolution of the scattering vector qm and the intensity Im at the scattering peak. The curves qm(t) for different cooling rates can be shifted onto a single mastercurve. The curves Im(t) show similar behavior. As shift factors, a characteristic length Lc and a characteristic time tc are introduced. Both characteristic quantities depend on the cooling rate through power laws: Lc approximately kappa(-delta) and tc approximately kappa(-rho). Scaling behavior in isothermal critical demixing is well known. There the temporal evolutions of qm and Im for different quench depths DeltaT can be scaled with the correlation length xi and the interdiffusion coefficient D, both depending on DeltaT through critical power laws. We show in this paper that the cooling rate scaling in nonisothermal demixing is a consequence of the quench depth scaling in the isothermal case. The exponents delta and rho are related to the critical exponents nu and nu* of xi and D, respectively. The structure growth during nonisothermal demixing can be described with a semiempirical model based on the hydrodynamic coarsening mechanism well known in the isothermal case. In very late stages of nonisothermal phase separation a secondary scattering maximum appears. This is due to secondary demixing. We explain the onset of secondary demixing by a competition between interdiffusion and coarsening.  相似文献

This article reviews some of the applications of physics to the solution of archaeological problems. The use of magnetic, resistivity and electromagnetic surveying techniques for the location of buried features is described. Various methods of age determination are outlined while the problems associated with radiocarbon dating of organic material and thermoluminescent dating of pottery are discussed in detail. The techniques, including petrological examination, chemical analysis and isotopic analysis, employed in the physical examination of archaeological artefacts are described. Examples of the application of these techniques in establishing the source of the raw materials used in pottery, metal and stone implements and in elucidating the techniques of manufacture of pottery and metal objects are also given.  相似文献

Changes in the dielectric permittivity ε′ and loss epsiv;″ during the curing of DGEBA catalyzed by 10 mole % dimethylbenzylamine have been studied from sol to gel to glass formation regions at different temperatures from 323 to 390 K. The ε′ monotonically decreases with time of cure, and ε″ initially decreases by several orders of magnitude and then increases to reach a peak value before finally decreasing to a low value characteristic of the glassy state. The features shift to shorter times and the peak vanishes as the curing temperature is increased. The decrease of ε″ at the initial stage of cure has been analyzed in terms of dc conductivity σ0, which follows a power law, σ0 ∝? (tg–t)x, as well as a new singularity equation, σ0 ∝? exp[–B/(t0t)] where tg, x, B, and t0 are empirical constants that vary with the curing temperature; tg is close to the time for gelation; and t0 ≥ time for vitrification. The dielectric properties of the thermoset formed after different periods of cure have been studied from 77 to 325 K. Similar studies of the thermosets formed at different temperatures have been made. Increase in the curing period decreases the heights of both the γ-and α-relaxation peaks and increases their separation, while a β-relaxation peak emerges. Isothermal curing at high temperatures decreases the height of the γ peak to a vanishingly small value and increases that of the β peak from a vanishingly small value. In both the uncured and fully cured states, there is only one sub-Tg relaxation process named γ for the uncured and β for the cured state. These results are discussed in terms of our general physical concepts of local mode motions in an amorphous matrix. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Using a surface force apparatus, we have measured the normal forces between mica surfaces across various types of nanoparticles consisting of ZnS cores coated with a monolayer of physisorbed surfactant, dispersed in organic solvents. We focused on the effects of nanoparticle size, shape, and concentration on the force-distance profiles. Forces were exponentially repulsive when the surfactant layers were strongly bound to the nanoparticles and were roughly linear when there was adhesion between the nanoparticle cores, i.e., when the surfactant layers detached from the nanoparticles. In both cases, the range and magnitude of the forces were dependent upon the particle size, shape, and solution concentration. Fine details in the otherwise smooth force-distance profiles indicate specific effects due to particle chemistry and geometry and the existence of first-order disorder-order phase transitions upon confinement. Small amounts of water in the (hydrophobic) organic solvents had dramatic effects on the measured forces. Understanding and controlling the effects of particle shape, size, and concentration and the presence of water (or other surface-active solutes) on particle-particle and particle-surface interactions are important for the processing of nanoparticles into ordered superstructured materials.  相似文献

In this study, methanol extracts (MEs) and essential oil (EO) of Angelica purpurascens (Avé-Lall.) Gill obtained from different parts (root, stem, leaf, and seed) were evaluated in terms of antioxidant activity, total phenolics, compositions of phenolic compound, and essential oil with the methods of 2,2-azino-bis(3ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS•+), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH•) radical scavenging activities, and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP), the Folin–Ciocalteu, liquid chromatography−tandem mass spectrometry (LC−MS/MS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC−MS), respectively. The root extract of A. purpurascens exhibited the highest ABTS•+, DPPH•, and FRAP activities (IC50: 0.05 ± 0.0001 mg/mL, IC50: 0.06 ± 0.002 mg/mL, 821.04 ± 15.96 µM TEAC (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity), respectively). Moreover, EO of A. purpurascens root displayed DPPH• scavenging activity (IC50: 2.95 ± 0.084 mg/mL). The root extract had the highest total phenolic content (438.75 ± 16.39 GAE (gallic acid equivalent), µg/mL)). Twenty compounds were identified by LC−MS/MS. The most abundant phenolics were ferulic acid (244.39 ± 15.64 μg/g extract), benzoic acid (138.18 ± 8.84 μg/g extract), oleuropein (78.04 ± 4.99 μg/g extract), and rutin (31.21 ± 2.00 μg/g extract) in seed, stem, root, and leaf extracts, respectively. According to the GC−MS analysis, the major components were determined as α-bisabolol (22.93%), cubebol (14.39%), α-pinene (11.63%), and α-limonene (9.41%) among 29 compounds. Consequently, the MEs and EO of A. purpurascens can be used as a natural antioxidant source.  相似文献
