On column injection-dual channel analysis of essential oils

A system to analyze a complex mixture simultaneously on two different columns after one single on-column injection is described. The splitting device, the possibilities of component identification by searching in a data base for Kovats indices on two different polarity stationary phases, and a practical example of an essential oil analysis are presented.     

Surface Tension of Binary Mixtures of 1-Alkyl-3-Methyl-Imidazolium Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide Ionic Liquids with Alcohols

New experimental surface tension data have been provided at 283.15, 298.15, 313.15 K and atmospheric pressure for binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids with the alcohols: methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, l-butanol and 1-pentanol. The experimental results show that the surface tensions of these mixtures depend systematically on the alkyl chain length of the ionic liquid and alcohol, composition and temperature. Surface tension changes on mixing have been calculated and adequately fitted by the Redlich–Kister polynomial equation. The adjustable parameters and the standard deviations between experimental and calculated values are reported.     

Identification and quantification of major species of arsenic in rice

A study was undertaken to develop a method for the chemical speciation of As in rice on the basis of current knowledge in this field for use in preparing a certified reference material (CRM). Samples of the Arborio rice variety were ground to a fine powder, which was extracted under sonication with a water-methanol mixture (1 + 1, v/v). The resulting solutions were injected into a high-performance liquid chromatograph combined on-line with a quadrupole inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. This hyphenated system allowed for the quantification of As species in one analytical step. Four forms of As were detected: inorganic As (III), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and inorganic As (V) at concentrations of 88.2 +/- 7.1, 50.8 +/- 5.0, 15.2 +/- 1.7, and 51.2 +/- 3.5 ng/g, respectively. The concentration of total As was 211 +/- 7 ng/g. The limits of detection (3sigma criterion) and the quantitation (10sigma criterion) were, respectively, as follows (in ng/g): As (III), 0.095 and 0.320; As (V), 0.082 and 0.273; MMA, 0.110 and 0.367; and DMA, 0.145 and 0.480. Ten hours were needed for the extraction procedure, 6 h for the evaporation, and 30 min for quantification of the analytes. This investigation was performed in the frame of a European Commission Project on the feasibility of CRMs for As and Se species.     

Physical properties and phase equilibria of the system isopropyl acetate + isopropanol + 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide

Densities, refractive indices and dynamic viscosities of binary and ternary mixtures composed of isopropyl acetate, isopropanol, 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C₈mim][NTf₂]) have been determined at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The excess molar volumes and dynamic viscosity changes of mixing have been calculated and correlated using the Redlich–Kister polynomial equation. Isobaric vapour–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data have been determined experimentally for these binary and ternary systems at 101.32 kPa. The equilibrium data have been adequately correlated by means of Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC equations for the liquid phase activity coefficient.     

Poly(ester urethane) guides for peripheral nerve regeneration

A biocompatible and elastomeric PU was synthesized from low-molecular-weight PCL as macrodiol, CMD as chain extender and HDI as chain linker for applications in the field of peripheral nerve repair. PU cast films supported in vitro attachment and proliferation of NOBEC. The in vitro adhesion and proliferation of S5Y5 neuroblastoma cells on the inner surface of uncoated, gelatin- and PL-coated PU guides were compared. Due to their superior in vitro performance, PL-coated PU guides were tested in vivo for the repair of 1.8 cm-long defects in rat sciatic nerves. The progressive regeneration was confirmed by EMG and histological analysis showing the presence of regenerating fibers in the distal stumps.     

Tunable diode lasers and two-tone frequency modulation spectroscopy applied to atmospheric gas analysis

In this paper, we discuss the main features of a class of gas analyzers based on spectroscopic techniques with the aim of realizing fully automated systems which can be used for practical purposes. The technique we deal with is based on semiconductor diode laser as sources, emitting in the near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the two-tone frequency modulation spectroscopy as the detection technique. We will describe the main features of a typical device and two particular apparata for industrial and biological applications.

Segmented Polyurethanes for Medical Applications: Synthesis,Characterization and in vitro Enzymatic Degradation Studies

Degradable segmented poly(ether-ester-urethanes) of variable segment chemistry and content were synthesized and characterized. Polycaprolactone diol, a series of poly(ether-ester) block copolymers, and a diisocyanate giving non toxic degradation products were used to form the prepolymer. Cyclohexane dimethanol and a L–phenylalanine–based diester (Phe diester) were used as chain extenders. The influence of α-chimotrypsin on the degradation was investigated by exposing the polymers to buffer and enzyme solutions for 12 days. The SEM, SEC, and gravimetric results showed that a significant erosion of the Phe diester containing polymer compared with the control polyurethane occurred in the presence of the enzyme but not in a normal buffer solution.     

Physical and excess properties of (methyl acetate + methanol + 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) and its binary mixtures at T = 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure

Densities, dynamic viscosities, and refractive indices of the ternary system composed by methanol, methyl acetate, and 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and the binary combinations of these constituents have been measured. The excess molar volumes as well as molar refraction and viscosity changes of mixing were calculated and fitted to the Redlich–Kister equation to determine the fitting parameters and the root-mean-square deviations.
