Relatively large amounts of radioactive iodine 129I (T 1/2  = 15.7 Ma) have been documented in seawater such as the English Channel, the Irish Sea and the North Sea. Data on the concentration of the iodine isotopes in waters of the Celtic Sea are missing. Aiming to provide first 129I data in the Celtic Sea and compare them with levels in the other close-by seawater bodies, surface seawater samples were analyzed for the determination of 127I and 129I concentrations. The results revealed a high level of 129I in these waters and suggest strong influence by liquid discharges from La Hague and Sellafield reprocessing facilities. 127I concentrations are rather constant while the 129I/127I ratio reaches up to 2.8 × 10?8 (ranging from 10?10 to 10?8), which is 2–4 orders of magnitude higher than pre-nuclear era natural level. Transport of 129I to the Celtic Sea is difficult to depict accurately since available data are sparse. Most likely, however, that discharges originated from La Hague may have more influence on the Celtic Sea 129I concentrations than the Sellafield. Comprehensive surface water and depth profiles 129I data will be needed in the future for assessment of environmental impact in the region.  相似文献

Iodine speciation plays a significant role in iodine volatilizing into atmosphere from the seas, as well as serving as a biological indicator. Despite this importance, the data on iodine species revealed inconclusive evidence of what factors controlling speciation transformation. We here present new data on profiles of 129I speciation in the Baltic Proper during November 2009. Along with the two earlier investigations (August 2006 and April 2007), an assessment of seasonal variation of 129I species is presented. The results show that, due to the anoxic nature of Baltic Proper, presence of 129IO3 ? in the Baltic Proper does not follow an obvious seasonal cycle, as the case with 129I?. Concentrations of 129I? in the Baltic Proper exhibit higher values in summer than the other two seasons (spring and winter), which might be associated with degrading of organic matter and release from sediment to water column that is more pronounced during summer. 129I? in surface water from the three seasons does not reflect the release function from the reprocessing facilities during the period April 2007 to November 2009. Consequently variability of 129I? in surface seawater of the Baltic Proper depends, to some extent, on local physical as well as biochemical conditions.  相似文献

The investigation provides the first data of gross-α and gross-β activities in groundwater of the Haihe River Plain, China. Ranges of gross-α and gross-β activities vary from 17 to 362 mBq/L and from 18 to 779 mBq/L, respectively. These values are below the permissible limits given by the WHO for drinking water, but they do not include possible additional dose that may emanate from gaseous phases. Comparison of gross-α and gross-β activities with data from groundwater in other parts of China and globally suggests that precipitation rate has strong control on natural radioactivity in groundwater, particularly of shallow aquifers.  相似文献

Groundwater in arid and semiarid regions is vital resource for many uses and therefore information about concentrations of uranium isotopes among other chemical parameters are necessary. In the study presented here, distribution of 238U and 235U in groundwater of four selected locations in the southern Arabian peninsula, namely at two locations within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and two locations in Oman are discussed. The analyses of the uranium isotopes were performed using ICP-MS and the results indicated a range of concentrations for 235U and 238 U at 3–39 ng L?1 (average: 18 ng L?1) and 429–5,293 ng L?1 (average: 2,508 ng L?1) respectively. These uranium concentrations are below the higher permissible WHO limit for drinking water and also comparable to averages found in groundwater from similar aquifers in Florida and Tunisia. Negative correlation between rainfall and uranium concentrations suggests that in lithologically comparable aquifers, climate may influence the concentration of uranium in subtropical to arid regions.  相似文献

Characterizing the quality and radioactivity of groundwater is vital as it represents valuable resource in arid regions. Here we present radioactivity level in groundwater collected from wells in a region along the border between Sultanate of Oman and United Arab Emirates (UAE). The aquifers are alluvium deposits (silt, sand and gravel) and the measured groundwater radioactivity (including 232Th, 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 222Rn, gross-α and gross-β) indicates values below the WHO permissible limits for drinking water. The results also show large difference in radioactivity fingerprints, in particular for 226Ra and 222Rn within the investigated aquifers. The data further indicate lower radioactivity in groundwater of the alluviums compared to the carbonate aquifers in the region. This feature makes the alluvium aquifers valuable reservoirs that should be carefully exploited as a source of groundwater. As this is the first investigation on the radioactivity of groundwater in alluvial aquifers in the region, it suggests that other alluvial deposits, particularly those inland and far from the marine water intrusion or seepage from carbonate rocks would have low radioactivity fingerprints.  相似文献

The Bothnian Sea which is located between Finland and Sweden represents an important source of fresh water to the Baltic Sea. We here present new data on the radioactive isotope 129I species from water samples collected in December 2009 at different depths in the Bothnian Sea. Concentrations of 129I? (iodide) in the Bothnian Sea range from 14 × 108 to 32 × 108 atoms/L, while 129IO3 ? (iodate) concentrations are relatively low and fluctuating at 1 × 108 atoms/L. For nutrients data determined in the same samples as 129I, significant correlations could be found between 129I? and total P, NO3–N, SiO3–Si, but rather poor with NH4–N. The correlations suggest comparable source pathway of 129I? and nutrient parameters, while the source of NH4–N may be different. The small amounts and negligible change of 129IO3 ? indicate prevailing extensive reduction of iodate in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

The 10Be isotope is widely used in geochronology, climate and environmental analyses and astrophysics where atmospheric deposition model estimate plays a vital role for the initial concentration. Data from arid regions have not been well constrained because of sparse measurement and here we present 10Be concentration in samples of dust, soil, marine sediments and paleosol collected from an arid to semi-arid low latitude region. These results indicate concentrations that are about a factor of three lower than values expected from latitude zonal models, but are comparable with global atmospheric depositional model. The agreement and discrepancy between model and measured data are rather vital for establishing accurate initial 10Be in the Earth’s surface environment for reconstruction of paleoclimatic variability (precipitation rates and temperature).  相似文献
