The effects of sample preparation methods on the variability of the electrospray ionization response for model drug compounds

A post-column infusion system was developed in order to analyze suppression of electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry response in the presence of endogenous plasma interferences. By enabling direct detection of these interfering components, this experimental system was used to analyze the ability of several common extraction procedures to remove endogenous plasma components that cause changes in the ESI response of model drug substances. Methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE) liquid-liquid, Oasis and Empore solid-phase, and acetonitrile (ACN) protein precipitation sample preparation methods were tested using the post-column infusion system. In all cases, ACN protein precipitation samples showed the greatest amount of ESI response suppression while liquid-liquid extracts demonstrated the least. In addition, the three test compounds, phenacetin, caffeine, and a representative Merck compound, demonstrated that ESI response suppression is compound dependent. Suppression was greatest with caffeine, the most polar analyte, and the smallest for the Merck compound, the least polar analyte. Copyright 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Gamma-ray spectroscopy with relativistic exotic heavy-ions

Feasibility of gamma-ray spectroscopy at relativistic energies with exotic heavy-ions and new generation of germanium detectors (segmented Clover) is discussed. An experiment with such detector array and radioactive is discussed.     

Percolative transport in the vicinity of charge-order ferromagnetic transition in a hole-doped manganite

We report measurements of non-linear charge transport in epitaxial (La_1−x Pr _x )_0.7Ca_0.3MnO₃ thin films fabricated on (100) oriented SrTiO₃ single crystals by pulsed laser deposition. The end members of this series, namely Pr_0.7Ca_0.3MnO₃ and La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO₃ are canonical charge-ordered (CO) and ferromagnetic manganites, respectively. The onset of the CO state in Pr_0.7Ca_0.3MnO₃ is manifested by a pronounced insulating behavior below ∼ 200 K. The CO state remains stable even when a large (∼ 2×10⁵ V/cm) electric field is applied across the thin film samples. However, on substitution of Pr with La, a crossover from the highly resistive CO state to a state of metallic character is observed at relatively low electric fields. The current-voltage characteristics of the samples at low temperatures show hysteretic and history dependent effects. The electric field driven charge transport in the system is modelled on the basis of an inhomogeneous medium consisting of ferromagnetic metallic clusters dispersed in a CO background.     

Influence of oxygen on the guiding properties of V2O5-clad glass waveguide

An optical waveguide clad with V2O5 is proposed as a new type of oxygen sensor in ambient air. The presence of gas changes the light transmission (TE0-polarized mode) through the guide, due to the change in refractive index of the cladding which changes the effective index of the guide. O2 gas concentration is varied from a few (≈10) ppm to several percent (4%). Sensors exhibit the same sensitivity at a slightly elevated temperature. The increase in thickness of the cladding causes a reduction in sensitivity and increase in linearity. It is observed that the sensor exhibits the same performance using the static or incremental mode. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Self-chemical ionization of diethylzinc

The self-chemical ionization of diethylzinc is examined by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry and semiempirical molecular orbital calculations. Electron impact of diethylzinc neutral produces the radical cation, C(4)H(15)Zn(+) (m/z x 122), which reacts further with the neutral (C(2)H(5))(2)Zn to give the following product ions: Zn(+) (m/z x 64), C(2)H(5)Zn(+) (m/z x 93), C(4)H(9)Zn(+) (m/z x 121), C(4)H(11)Zn(2)(+) (m/z x 187), and C(6)H(15)Zn(2)(+) (m/z x 215). To determine the structure and pathways for production of these ions, monoisotopic (12)C(4)H(15)(64)Zn(+), (64)Zn(+) and (12)C(2)H(5)(64)Zn(+) were individually isolated and reacted with the neutral background. We also performed semiempirical molecular orbital calculations (ZINDO/1). The molecular orbital calculations and experimental data are consistent in predicting that the ethyl group on the diethylzinc cation carries the positive charge. Tunneling studies on single crystals of superconducting Bi2Ca1−xYxSr2Cu2O8+δ

Tunneling studies have been carried out on single crystals of Bi₂Ca_1−xSr_xCu₂O_8+δ over a wide range of compositions wherein the hole concentration varies by a factor of 2.5. The 2Δ value varies between 25 meV and 75 meV over the composition range studied, but scales with 2Δ/k_BT_c≈9.5 throughout.     

Preparation, characterization and non-linear optical properties of pristine m-nitroaniline (m-NA) and its recycled polystyrene (Re-PS) coated single crystals

Meta-nitroaniline (m-NA) is one of the organic single crystals extensively studied due to its high non-linear effect. m-NA is also known to exhibit comparable or even better non-linear optical (NLO) properties than known inorganic materials. In this paper, we report development of m-NA single crystals by solution growth technique using different solvent systems. The size of the single crystal varies depending on solvent. The highest average crystal size acquired was 10 mm×5 mm×5 mm using methyl ethyl ketone and acetone as solvent. These single crystals were characterized using various physico-chemical techniques such as XRD and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The developed crystals were subsequently coated with recycled polystyrene (Re-PS) (1, 2, 5 and 10 wt% concentrations) to study the effect of polymer coating on the second harmonic generation (SHG) properties of the single crystals. The purpose of polymer coating on m-NA single crystal is to improve surface morphology of crystal (i.e. it makes surface smooth) and to enhance power handling capacity for pulse laser of a crystal which, in turn, improves the SHG intensity. The optimum percentage of coating was determined for the m-NA single crystals obtained from different solvent systems. Furthermore, the polymer coating also plays key role in preventing the degradation of the m-NA crystal (well-known as highly sublime material) and ultimately increasing the shelf life of the crystal for its device application.     

Low cost Pockels cell driver for pulsed solid state lasers

The paper describes a low cost Pockels cell driver for Q-switching flash lamp pumped pulsed solid state lasers. The driver consists of a high voltage pulsed power supply variable from 0 to 5 kV using a standard step up transformer. The pulse width and pulse repetition rate are varied using standard TTL circuits from 50 μs to 2 ms and 1 ppm to 50 Hz, respectively. The pulsed high voltage along with a high voltage switch consisting of a stack of bipolar transistors is used to drive a Pockels cell. The Q-switched pulsed duration measured in Ruby and Nd-YAG lasers are 35 and 15 ns, respectively. The Pockels cell driver performance is consistent for more than 5×10⁷ shots.
