A homemade instrument for the measurement of oxygen concentration in aqueous solutions measures the decay rate of the phosphorescence of a Pd-porphyrin complex (phosphor) dissolved in the solution, which is flashed every 0.1 s with 630 nm light. The concentration of O2 is a linear function of the decay rate. The instrument is used to study the reaction of dithionite (S2O42-) with O2 at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C. It is found that the ratio of dithionite to oxygen consumed in the reaction is 1.2 +/- 0.2 at 25 degrees C and 1.7 +/- 0.1 at 37 degrees C, suggesting a temperature-dependent stoichiometry. At both temperatures, the initial rate of O2 consumption, -d[O2]/dt, is found to be 1/2 order in S2O42- and first order in O2. This finding is consistent with a previously proposed mechanism: S2O42- <--> 2SO2- comes to a rapid equilibrium, and SO2- reacts with O2 in the rate-determining step.  相似文献

Nano-objects and thin films displaying molecular spin-crossover phenomena have recently attracted much attention. However, the investigation of spin crossover at reduced sizes is still a big challenge. Here we demonstrate that surface plasmon polariton waves propagating along the interface between a metal and a dielectric layer can be used to detect the spin-state changes in the latter with high sensitivity, even at the nanometer scale.  相似文献

There is a high interest in improving the hydrophilicity of polymer surfaces due to their wide use for technological purposes. In this study Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) as a biocompatible material was bombarded with 1 MeV He ions to the fluences ranging from 1×1013 to 5×1014 cm?2. The pristine and ion beam modified samples were investigated by photoluminescence (PL), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The changes of wettability and surface free energy were determined by the contact angle measurements. The obtained results showed that the ion bombardment induced decrease in integrated luminescence intensity and decrease in the transmittance with increase of ion fluence as well. This is might be attributed to degradation of polymer surface and/or creation of new electronic levels in the forbidden gap. The FTIR spectral studies indicate that the ion beam induces chemical modifications within the bombarded UHMWPE. Formation of carbonyl groups (C=O) on the polymer surface was studied. Direct relationship of the wettability and surface free energy of the bombarded polymer with the ion fluences was observed.  相似文献

The effects of ion-beam bombardment on the physical and chemical properties of poly(allyl diglycol carbonate) (CR-39) polymer have been investigated. CR-39 samples were bombarded with 320 keV Ar and 130 keV He ions at fluences ranging from 1 × 1013 to 2 × 1016 ions/cm2. The nature and extent of radiation damage induced were studied by UV–VIS spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, as well as Vickers' hardness measurements. In addition, the effect of ion fluence on the wetting properties of ion-beam bombarded CR-39 polymer was determined by measuring the contact angle for distilled water. UV–VIS spectra of bombarded samples reveal that the optical band gap decreases with increasing ion fluence for both Ar and He ions. In the FTIR spectra, changes in the intensity of the bands on irradiation relative to pristine samples occurred with the appearance of new bands. XRD analyses showed that the degree of ordering of the CR-39 polymer is dependent on the ion fluence. Changes of surface layer composition and an increase in the number of carbonaceous clusters produced important change in the energy gap and the surface wettability. The surface hardness increased from 10.54 MPa for pristine samples to 28.98 and 23.35 MPa for samples bombarded with Ar and He ions at the highest fluence, respectively.  相似文献

Seeds of two barley cultivars (Local Black and Shoaa) were gamma irradiated at 0, 10, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kGy doses using Cobalt-60 source to decrease the viscosity. The viscosity was determined in the flour of the seeds using Ostwald U-tube viscometer. The viscosity values were reduced by 25%, 50%, 65%, 72% and 74% in Local Black barley cultivar, while, in Shoaa cultivar the reductions were 15%, 30%, 52%, 69% and 67% at 10, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kGy, respectively. The chemical compositions of the seeds were determined in all treatments.  相似文献

Fluence-response relationships have been measured at wavelengths from 350 to 760 nm for the enhancement of phototropism in Arabidopsis thulium L. (Heynh) strain “Estland” by an irradiation at each of these wavelengths, given 2 h prior to a 450 nm inductive unilateral irradiation. Action spectra have been constructed from these fluence-response relationships based on: (i) the fluence required to obtain a curvature of 25° (corresponding to an enhancement of 15°), (ii) the fluence required to obtain 50% of the maximum enhancement and (iii) the fluence threshold for enhancement by a pre-irradiation. The action spectra exhibit two maxima, one at 669 nm and a second at 378 nm. The height of the maximum at 669 nm is approximately 4 times the height of the maximum at 378 nm. Based on the action spectra, it is concluded that the enhancement of phototropism in A. thaliana is mediated by phytochrome.  相似文献

In the present work, Makrofol DE samples were irradiated with different doses of alpha particles. The optical and mechanical modifications in the alpha-irradiated Makrofol samples as a function of alpha irradiation time have been investigated. Different characterization techniques, UV–vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and Vickers micro hardness tester have been used. UV–vis spectra of bombarded samples reveal that the optical absorption increases with increasing the irradiation time. The direct and indirect optical band gap was found to decrease from 3.4 and 2.81?eV for pristine sample to 3.1 and 2.35?eV for that bombarded with alpha particles at the highest irradiation time (15?h), respectively. The number of carbon atoms per conjugated length (N) and the number of carbon atoms per cluster (M) have been estimated. An increase in both N and M with increasing the irradiation time was noticed. A remarkable decrease in PL intensity with increasing the alpha irradiation time was observed. This decrease is attributed to ion beam-induced change in molecular structure and/or defects in the modified layer. The surface hardness for unmodified and modified polymeric material has been studied.  相似文献

Surface free energy of biocompatible polymers is important factor which affects the surface properties such as wetting, adhesion and biocompatibility. In the present work, the change in the surface free energy of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) samples, which is produced by electron beam and gamma ray irradiation were, investigated. Mechanism of the changes in surface free energy induced by irradiations of doses ranging from 25 to 500 kGy was studied. FTIR technique was applied for sample analysis. Contact angle measurements showed that wettability and surface free energy of samples have increased with increasing the irradiation dose, where the values of droplet contact angle of the samples decrease gradually with increasing the radiation dose. The increase in the wettability and surface free energy of the irradiated samples are attributed to formation of hydrophilic groups on the polymer surface by the oxidation, which apparently occurs by exposure of irradiated samples to the air.  相似文献
