Synthesis and Structure of Mixed Phosphonium-iodonium Ylide

A mixed phosphonium-iodonium ylide, phenyliodoniumethoxycarbonylmethylenetriphenylphosphorane borofluoride, was synthesized. Its structure was established by means of X-ray diffraction analysis. Temperature dependence of ¹H, ¹³C, and ³¹P spectra of the ylide synthesized was investigated. A dynamic equilibrium between Z and E-isomers was observed.     

Weak decoherence and quantum trajectory graphs

Griffiths' quantum trajectories formalism is extended to describe weak decoherence. The decoherence conditions are shown to severely limit the complexity of histories composed of fine-grained events.     

1-(Organosulfonyloxy)-3(1H)-1,2-benziodoxoles: Preparation and Reactions with Alkynyltrimethylsilanes

Organosulfonyloxy derivatives of 1,2-benziodoxol-3(1H)-one (3a-c) and 3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)-3(1H)-1,2-benziodoxole (5a-c) can be prepared in high yield by the reaction of 1-hydroxybenziodoxoles 1 or 4 and the corresponding sulfonic acids or Me(3)SiOTf in the form of stable, but moderately hygroscopic, microcrystalline solids. Reaction of the triflate derivatives 3a and 5a with alkynyltrimethylsilanes affords either alkynyliodonium triflates 6, or (E)-beta-(trifluoromethanesulfonyloxy)alkenyliodonium triflates 7, while the same reaction in the presence of pyridine selectively gives the respective 1-alkynylbenziodoxoles 8 and 9 in 82-90% yield.     

Preparation and chemistry of phosphoranyl-derived iodanes

The preparation and chemistry of novel phosphoranyl-derived lambda(3)-iodanes is reported. The phosphoranyl-derived phenyliodonium sulfonates were prepared in good yields by the reaction of stabilized phosphonium ylides [1-triphenylphosphoranylidene-2-propanone, methyl(triphenylphosphoranylidene)acetate, (triphenylphosphoranylidene)acetaldehyde, and (triphenylphosphoranylidene)acetonitrile] with the pyridinium complex of iodobenzene ditriflate or with [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]benzene under mild conditions. These compounds represent a potentially useful class of reagents that combine in one molecule synthetic advantages of a phosphonium ylide and an iodonium salt. Specifically, phosphorane-derived phenyliodonium tosylates can react with soft nucleophiles, such as iodide, bromide, benzenesulfinate, and thiophenolate anions, with a selective formation of the respective alpha-functionalized phosphonium ylides, which can be further converted to alkenes by the Wittig reaction with benzaldehyde. The phosphoranyl-derived benziodoxoles can be prepared by the reaction of 1-acetoxybenziodoxole with stabilized phosphonium ylides. An unusual ligand exchange on the iodine(III) center resulting in the substitution of a carbon ligand with an oxygen ligand was observed in the reaction of these compounds with strong acids.     

1-[Hydroxy(sulfonyloxy)iodo]-1H,1H-perfluoroalkanes: Stable, Fluoroalkyl Analogs of Koser's Reagent

1-[Hydroxy(sulfonyloxy)iodo]-1H,1H-perfluoroalkanes 3 [R(f)CH(2)I(OH)OSO(2)R; R = CH(3), CF(3), p-CH(3)C(6)H(4), R(f) = CF(3), C(2)F(5)] can be prepared in two steps from the appropriate iodofluoroalkanes by oxidation with peroxytrifluoroacetic acid and subsequent reaction with TsOH, MsOH, or Me(3)SiOTf. The tosylate derivative 3a reacts with silyl enol ethers under mild conditions to give the respective alpha-(tosyloxy) ketones. A similar reaction of cyclohexene furnishes cis-1,2-bis(tosyloxy)cyclohexane as the major product. Triflates 3c,f react with (trimethylsilyl)arenes under mild conditions to afford the respective (fluoroalkyl) (aryl)iodonium triflates 7, while the analogous reaction with alkynyltrimethylsilanes leads to novel (fluoroalkyl)(alkynyl)iodonium salts 8.     

Formation of tryptanthrin compounds upon Oxone-induced dimerization of indole-3-carbaldehydes

Tryptanthrin is a natural product with numerous important pharmacological properties. Tryptanthrin and its analogs are commonly prepared by condensation of isatoic anhydride and isatin. In this Letter we investigate the formation of tryptanthrin derivatives upon Oxone-induced oxidative dimerization of indole-3-carbaldehydes.     

Effect of gap and flow orientation on two-phase flow in an oil-wet gap: Relative permeability curves and flow structures

Naturally fractured reservoirs contain about 25–30% of the world supply of oil. In these reservoirs, fractures are the dominant flow path. Therefore, a good understanding of transfer parameters such as relative permeability as well as flow regimes occurring in a fracture plays an important role in developing and improving oil production from such complex systems. However, in contrast with gas–liquid flow in a single fracture, the flow of heavy oil and water has received less attention. In this research, a Hele-Shaw apparatus was built to study the flow of water in presence of heavy oil and display different flow patterns under different flow rates and analyze the effect of fracture orientations on relative permeability curves as well as flow regimes. The phase flow rates versus phase saturation results were converted to experimental relative permeability curves. The results of the experiments demonstrate that, depending on fracture and flow orientation, there could be a significant interference between the phases flowing through the fracture. The results also reveal that both phases can flow in both continuous and discontinuous forms. The relative permeability curves show that the oil–water relative permeability not only depends on fluid saturations and flow patterns but also fracture orientation.
