Microscopic Theory of Blue Phases Ⅰ and Ⅱ of Liquid Crystal

The microscopic theory of the blue phases of chiral liquid crystal is proposed. Beginning with the potential between two molecules, by using the cell model of liquid, applying statistical physical method, the distribution function and the free energy of the system are obtained. By using variational approach and zero-order approximation, the differential equation that the order parameter tensor of the blue phase can satisfy is obtained. Then we change the differential equation to the eigenequation problem in quantum mechanics. Considering the symmetry of the blue phases,the order parameter tensors of blue phases Ⅰ and Ⅱ can be made up of the eigenvectors. Our results are the same as the results of Ginzberg-Landau‘s phenomenological theory. The parameters in the order parameter tensors that we calculate in the located system are close to the predecessors‘ results.     

Synthesis,crystal structure and luminescent property of a novel H<Subscript>2</Subscript>O-bridged cobalt(II) polymer with one-dimensional chain structure

The coordination compound [Co(C₁₀H₇COO)₂(H₂O)₃]_2n · 4nH₂O was prepared by the reaction of 1-naphthoic acid and cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate in basic solution, and was fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, element analysis, FTIR, TG-DTA and luminescent spectra. In the crystal the six-coordinated Co(II) centers are linked into one-dimensional zigzag chains by water molecules, which are further assembled into a two-dimensional network through weak inter-chain C–H···π interactions. The solid complex exhibits favorable fluorescent properties similar to those of free ligand at room temperature, which can be assigned to the intraligand electronic transfer.

Based on a sample of 5.8×10⁷ J/ψ events taken with the BESII detector, the branching fractions of J/ψ→2(π⁺π⁻)η and J/ψ→3(π⁺π⁻)η are measured for the first time to be (2.26±0.08±0.27)×10⁻³ and (7.24±0.96±1.11)×10⁻⁴, respectively.     

Simultaneous chromatic dispersion monitoring,extinction ratio enhancement and wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing

This paper presents a multi-functional all-optical device performs simultaneous chromatic dispersion (CD) monitoring, extinction ratio (ER) improvement and tunable wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a single piece of highly nonlinear optical fiber (HNLF). The multi-functional ability arises from the nonlinear power transfer function (PTF) between the input signal and the output idler wave, which not only maps the CD information of the signal onto the average power of idler wave, but also transfers the data information to the idler wave with ER enhancement, making the device compact and cost effective. Furthermore within the wavelength tuning range the monitoring sensitivity and output ER can be much higher compared to all optical monitors and regenerators proposed before. Numerical simulations are then used to demonstrate the efficiency of this method.     

Nano-graphitic clustering and break down of phonon selection rule in diamond-like carbon films

Diamond-like carbon films are deposited on silicon substrates at different substrate bias using ECR-CVD technique. Raman spectroscopic studies show the presence of broad G and D peaks. In contrast to the position of D peak, the G peak shows a systematic red-shift with increase in the bias voltage. From the analysis it is found that an increase in bias voltage decreases the sp² cluster diameter. Furthermore, two additional Raman peaks at around 690 and 880 cm^?1 are also observed. These peaks, forbidden in the first order Raman scattering, arise due to the breakdown of phonon selection rule in graphitic nanoclusters.     

Influence of bilayer periods on structural and mechanical properties of ZrC/ZrB2 superlattice coatings

ZrC/ZrB₂ multilayered coatings with bilayer periods ranging from 4.4 to 35.5 nm were synthesized by r.f. magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and nanoindention were employed to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of the nanoscale multilayers. The results indicated that all coatings had the clear multilayered structure with mixed ZrB₂(0 0 1), ZrB₂(0 0 2) and ZrC(1 1 1) preferred orientations. The maximum hardness (41.7 GPa) was observed in the multilayer with 27.5-nm thick period, which is about 25% higher than the rule-of-mixture value of the monolithic ZrC and ZrB₂ coatings. It also exhibited the best adhesion. Its critical load was over 70 mN. While through insert ZrB₂ into ZrC layer periodically, higher residual stress built in ZrC layer can be released.     

Self-accelerating and self-breathing Bessel-like beams along arbitrary trajectories

We theoretically and experimentally study self-accelerating and self-breathing Bessel-like beams that fol- low arbitrary trajectories, including hyperbolic, hyperbolic secant, and three-dimensional （3D） spiraling trajectories. The beams have an overall Bessel-like profile in transverse dimensions; however, the intensity of their central main lobe breathes while traveling along a curved trajectory. Such beams can be readily generated experimentally through appropriate phase modulation of the optical wavefront. The beams con- tribute to the design of new families of self-accelerating beams.

Asymmetric electrical properties in Pt/Ba0.5Sr0.5Ti0.99Co0.01O3/Nb-doped SrTiO3 capacitors

Ba_0.5Sr_0.5Ti_0.99Co_0.01O₃ (BSTC) thin films have been fabricated with pulsed laser deposition on Nb-doped SrTiO₃ (STN) substrate. In Pt/BSTC/STN capacitor, we systematically investigated the capacitance, leakage current and polarization versus bias voltage characteristics, and found that curves of capacitance versus voltage and leakage current versus voltage were not symmetric, and polarization hysteresis loop exhibited large relaxation of the remnant polarization at negatively poled state. A detailed analysis of capacitance data demonstrated a difference of the built-in voltage between top Pt/BSTC interface (V_b,t=2.5 V) and bottom BSTC/STN interface (V_b,b=1.1 V). Such different built-in voltages lead to the presence of an internal electric field, which results in asymmetric electric characteristics in Pt/BSTC/STN capacitor.
