Effect of graft polymer prepared by living radical polymerisation on electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal

In this study, a graft polymer matrix prepared by living radical polymerisation had been incorporated into polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs). The electro-optical properties of the PDLCs were investigated. The results showed that the length and density of graft chain had a great influence on the memory effect of the PDLCs. Low-driving-voltage and weak-memory-effect PDLCs could easily be obtained with a graft polymer matrix.     

Discontinuous crack-bridging model for fracture toughness analysis of nacre

Studying the structure–property relation of biological materials can not only provide insight into the physical mechanisms underlying their superior properties and functions but also benefit the design and fabrication of advanced biomimetic materials. In this paper, we present a microstructure-based fracture mechanics model to investigate the toughening effect due to the crack-bridging mechanism of platelets. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates the crucial contribution of this mechanism to the high toughness of nacre. It is found that the fracture toughness of nacre exhibits distinct dependence on the sizes of platelets, and the optimized ranges for the thickness and length of platelets required to achieve higher fracture toughness are given. In addition, the effects of such factors as the mechanical properties of the organic phase (or interfaces), the effective elastic modulus of nacre, and the stacking pattern of platelets are also examined. Finally, some guidelines for the biomimetic design of novel materials are proposed based on our theoretical analysis.

Electric field enhancement in guided-mode resonance filters

Electric fields inside guided-mode resonance filters (GMRFs) may be intensified by resonance effects. The electric field enhancement is investigated in two GMRFs: one is resonant at normal incidence, the other at oblique incidence. It is shown that the two GMRFs exhibit different behaviors in their electric enhancement. Differences between the electric field distributions of the two GMRFs arise because coupling between counterpropagating modes occurs in the first case. It is also shown that the order of the electric field of maximum amplitude can be controlled by modulation of the dielectric constant of the grating.     

氢化物发生—原子荧光法测定不同产地绞股蓝及其根际土壤中As,Hg,Se

通过优化了的氢化物发生—原子荧光法测定了7个省产绞股蓝及其根际土壤中As,Hg,Se三种元素的含量,研究结果表明:7个省产绞股蓝中As,Hg,Se的含量存在较大差异,但As和Hg两种重金属元素含量均低于《药用植物及制剂进出口绿色行业标准》中As和Hg的限量标准。Se元素含量同根际土壤中Se元素含量显示极显著相关性,故湖北恩施富硒区产绞股蓝中Se含量明显高于其他6省产绞股蓝。研究结果可以初步判定,绞股蓝中Se元素主要来源于土壤,而As和Hg元素的积累则不同于Se元素,还可能受到大气气溶胶的干、湿沉降等因素的影响。

Improving the precision of fluorescence lifetime measurement using a streak camera

Streak camera has high temporal resolution and high sensitivity, and is a powerful tool in biomedical study to measure fluorescence lifetime and perform fluorescence lifetime imaging. However, nonuniformity of the gain in the streak tube and nonlinearity of the sweeping speed limit the precision of fluorescence lifetime measurement, particularly when fluorescence lifetimes are short. We have constructed a two-photon excitation fluorescence lifetime measurement system that is based on a synchroscan streak camera and have developed accordingly a method to correct the effect of gain nonuniformity and nonlinearity of sweeping speed on the measurement precision. A continuous-wave laser of high stability is used to calibrate the gain of the streak camera, and a Fabry-Perot etalon is used to calibrate the nonlinearity of the sweeping speed. Fitting algorithms are used to correct the gain of the streak camera and nonlinearity of the sweeping speed respectively, which significantly improves the measurement precision of the system, as characterized through the fluorescence lifetime of the short-lived fluorescence dye, Rose Bengal. Experimental results show that the measurement fluctuation of the lifetime has been improved from more than 10% to 2% after correcting the effects of gain nonuniformity and sweeping speed nonlinearity.     

Picosecond stimulated Raman scattering of BaWO4 crystal

In single-pass configuration, a picosecond pulse laser was used to investigate the stimulated Raman scattering in different BaWO₄ crystals. Using the thresholds for the first Stokes line along the a- and c-axis, the Raman gain coefficients of the BaWO₄ crystals were calculated along their respective direction. The higher Stokes (fourth) and anti-Stokes (third) lines were observed. Compared with other well-known Raman crystals, such as KGd(WO₄)₂ and Ba(NO₃)₂, BaWO₄ has favorable properties for scattering the pump radiation with picosecond pulse duration. The Raman gain coefficients of BaWO₄ are different, but do not vary for different transmission directions, which means that this Raman material can be selected more freely.     

Laser-induced damage of the optical films prepared by electron beam evaporation and ion beam sputtering in vacuum

The laser-induced damage characteristics and adsorption effects of organic contamination molecules of two high reflectors (HR) prepared by electron beam evaporation (EB) and ion beam sputtering (IBS) method at 1064 nm is investigated in vacuum. It is found that EB films show the performance degradation of laser induced damages in vacuum while for IBS film, seems to have no this effect, in comparison with air environment. In addition, EB coatings also have the strong affinity with organic contamination molecules, in contrast of IBS films. The results reveal that ion beam sputtering (IBS) method seem to be one of the favorite film deposition techniques of the optical films used in vacuum and space environments.
