Molecular weight distribution of solid petroleum waxes is a key parameter for the general characterization of these materials. Particular interest concerns extremely large components, typically present in oil distillation residua, and solid deposits found in oil production facilities. Molecular weight distributions of oil waxes were determined in this work by high temperature size exclusion chromatography. Separations were carried out with two different eluents, namely toluene and ortho-dichlorobenzene and two detection systems, these being a differential refractive index and a flame ionization detector. Toluene proved to be the best choice when combined with flame ionization detection. Better uniformity of response was the greatest advantage achieved by this approach. The experimental set up permitted analysis of samples containing molecules with up to 138 carbon atoms. Burning properties of very large molecules, isomerism affecting calibration, and signal asymmetry when flame ionization detection was adopted were three issues still requiring additional efforts to understand and to improve analysis accuracy. 相似文献

The drift-strip method for improving the energy response of a CdZnTe (CZT) detector to hard X- and gamma rays is discussed. Results for a 10×10×3 mm3 detector crystal demonstrate a remarkable improvement of the energy resolution. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 2.18 keV (3.6%), 2.45 keV (3.0%), 2.86 keV (0.8%) and 3.89 keV (0.6%) at 60, 80, 356 and 661 keV, respectively. A personnel neutron dosimeter prototype based on chemical and electrochemical etched CR-39 detector, combined with LiF converter, has been calibrated using an ICRP-like phantom, under a heavy-water moderated Californium source neutron spectra; A conversion factor of 1.052±126 spots cm−2 mSv−1 was obtained. The sealing properties of the detector holder showed a ten-fold reduction in radon background when it was tested in a high radon atmosphere. To monitor polymer–polymer coupling reactions between two different monofunctional polymers in dilute polymer blends, fluorescence‐labeled anhydride‐functional polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were prepared by conventional anionic polymerization. Sequential trapping of lithiopolystyrene by 1‐(2‐anthryl)‐1‐phenylethylene (APE) and then di‐t‐butyl maleate (4) provided, after pyrolysis, anhydride‐functional fluorescent PS. Fluorescent PMMA anhydride (8) was synthesized with sec‐butyllithium/APE as an initiator for the anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate, trapping by 4, and pyrolysis. These polymers could be reacted with amine‐functional polymers by melt blending, and the reaction progress could be monitored by gel permeation chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection. This technique not only allows monitoring of the coupling reaction with high sensitivity (ca. 100 times more sensitive than refractive index detection) but also permits selective detection because unlabeled polymers are invisible to fluorescence detection. This highly sensitive and selective detection methodology was also used to monitor the coupling reaction of 8 with PS‐NH2 at a thin‐film interface, which was otherwise difficult to detect by conventional methods. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
