Thermal explosion in multiple phase media

Thermal explosion (or self-ignition) is one of the mainly interesting and dangerous phenomena in the combustion. Homogeneous combustible gas mixtures with highly exothermic reaction reveal only two main types of the behaviour: explosive and slow. Transient regime between these main types of behaviour is traditionally called the thermal explosion limit. Addition of another phase (solid or liquid) into combustible gas mixture can lead to essential changes in the dynamical situation. This paper deals with an interesting phenomenon of thermal explosion in two-phase media, so-called thermal explosion with delay. Existence and type of temperature delay before the self-ignition depends on mass and thermal properties of the second phase. The analysis is based on qualitative theory of singular perturbed systems and duck techniques.

Robust stabilization for a class of uncertain dynamical systems with time delay

In this paper, a new and simple approach whereby we derive several sufficient conditions on robust stabilizability for a class of uncertain dynamical systems with time delay is presented. Some analytical methods and the Bellman-Gronwall inequality are employed to investigate these sufficient conditions. The notable features of the results obtained are their simplicity in testing the stability of uncertain dynamical systems with time delay and their clarity in giving insight into system analysis. Finally, several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the utilization of the results.The authors would like to acknowledge the many helpful comments provided by the reviewer. On queueing delays of dispersed messages

We study the message queueing delays in a node of a communication system, where a message consists of a block of consecutive packets. The message delay is defined as the time elapsing between the arrival epoch of the first packet of the message to the system until after the transmission of the last packet of that message is completed. We distinguish between two types of message generation processes. The message can be generated as abatch or it can bedispersed over time. In this paper we focus on the dispersed generation model. The main difficulty in the analysis is due to the correlation between the system states observed by different packets of the same message. This paper introduces a new technique to analyze the message delay in such systems for different arrival models and different number of sessions. For anM/M/1 system with variable size messages and for the bursty traffic model, we obtain an explicit expression for the Laplace-Stieltjes transform (LST) of the message delay. Derivations are also provided for anM/G/1 system, for multiple session systems and for fixed message sizes. We show that the correlation has a strong effect on the performance of the system, and that the commonly usedindependence assumption, i.e., the assumption that the delays of packets are independent from packet to packet, can lead to wrong conclusions.

Functionally separable solutions to nonlinear wave equations by group foliation method

We apply functional separation of variables within the approach of the group foliation method to the nonlinear wave equation with variable speed and external force: utt=A(x)(Dx(u)ux)+B(x)Q(u), Ax≠0. A classification of these equations admitting functionally separable solutions is performed and the resulting solutions are obtained in explicit form in many cases.     

On oscillation of a food-limited population model with impulse and delay

In this paper, we consider a food-limited population model with impulsive effect. Several explicit sufficient conditions are established for oscillation and nonoscillation of solutions of the equations.
