First‐principle investigations of the peculiar magnetic behavior of Sr2FeOsO6

Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Sr₂FeOsO₆ have been revisited by using the first‐principle calculations. Semiconducting behavior is reproduced. The band gap is 0.09 eV from generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and 0.30 eV by considering both SOC and U, a bit larger than the experimental observed 0.125 eV. In the C‐type antiferromagnetic configuration, spin frustration is found by analysing the magnetic exchange parameters, explaining the experimental observed magnetic complexity.

     

Novel predictive tool for accurate estimation of packed column size

Traditionally the majority of fractionation columns in natural gas processing plants were equipped with trays. However an option to trayed columns is to use packing. Packed columns offer a larger surface area per unit volume for mass transfer and the continuous gas to liquid contact throughout the column rather than at specific levels (such as in tray columns). For process design purposes, it is essential to estimate the pressure drop for enabling the proper operation of packed columns. In this study, a simple generalized pressure drop correlation (GPDC) which is easier than existing approaches requiring more complicated and longer computations is developed for sizing randomly packed fractionation columns for pressure drops up to 150 mm water per meter of packing. This correlation can be used to estimate pressure drop for a given loading and column diameter. Alternatively, for a given pressure drop the diameter can be determined. The predictions from the proposed correlation have been compared with reported data and found good agreement with average absolute deviation hovering around 4.9%. The proposed predictive tool is superior owing to its accuracy and clear numerical background, wherein the relevant coefficients can be retuned quickly if new and more accurate data are available in the future. This proposed simple-to-use approach can be of immense practical value for the engineers and scientists to have a quick check on the pressure drop in packed columns for a given loading and column diameter. In particular, gas engineers would find the proposed approach can be used very friendly involving no complex expressions with transparent and easy-to-handle calculation steps.     

Crystal structure, electronic and elastic properties for novel Hf3AlN and Zr3AlN ceramics explored by first principles studies

Investigations into crystal structure, electronic and elastic properties of M₃AlN (M=Hf, Zr) had been conducted by plane-wave pseudopotential calculations. The absence of band gap at the Fermi level and the finite value of the density of states at the Fermi energy reveal the metallic behavior of these two compounds. The charge density distributions and density of states indicate that there exist relatively soft Al-M and strong N-M covalent bonds, which might be contributed to layered chemical bonding character of M₃AlN. By analyzing Cauchy pressure and the bulk modulus to C₄₄ ratio, Hf₃AlN was predicted to be more ductile than Zr₃AlN.     

Non-linear degenerate integro-partial differential evolution equations related to geometric Lévy processes and applications to backward stochastic differential equations

We prove a comparison principle for unbounded semicontinuous viscosity sub- and supersolutions of non-linear degenerate parabolic integro-partial differential equations coming from applications in mathematical finance in which geometric Lévy processes act as the underlying stochastic processes for the assets dynamics. As a consequence of the “geometric form” of these processes, the comparison principle holds without assigning spatial boundary data. We present applications of our result to (i) backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) and (ii) pricing of European and American derivatives via BSDEs. Regarding (i), we extend previous results on BSDEs in a Lévy setting and the connection to semilinear integro-partial differential equations.     

MATLAB辅助下化工原理精馏单元计算探讨
