Physicochemical studies on hydrophobic PEO‐PPO‐PEO triblock copolymer micelles in SDS micellar environment

The shape, size, aggregation, hydration, and correlation times of water insoluble PEO‐PPO‐PEO triblock copolymer micelles with sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) micelles were investigated using transport studies and dynamic light scattering technique. From the conductance of micellar solutions of the polymer in 25 mM SDS and 5 mM NaCl, the hydration of polymer micelles were determined using the principle of obstruction of electrolyte migration by the polymer. The asymmetry of the micellar particles of polymer and polymer‐SDS mixed micellar systems in 5 mM NaCl and their average axial ratios were calculated using intrinsic viscosity and hydration data obeying Simha–Einstein equation. Hydration number and micellar sizes were variable with temperature. The shape of the polymer micelles has been ellipsoidal rather than spherical. The micellar volume, hydrodynamic radius, radius of gyration, diffusional coefficients as well as translational, rotational and effective correlation times have been calculated from the absolute values of the axes. The partial molal volume of polymer micelles has also been determined and its comparison with the molar volume of pure polymer suggested a volume contraction due to immobilization of the water phase by the hydrophilic head groups of the polymer. The thermodynamic activation parameters for viscous flow favor a more ordered water structure around polymer micelles at higher temperatures. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stability criteria for controlled queueing systems

We give an almost complete classification of ergodicity and transience conditions for a general multi-queue system with the following features: arrivals form Poisson streams and there are various routing schemes for allocating arrivals to queues; the servers can be configured in a variety of ways; completed jobs can feed back into the system; the exponential service times and feedback probabilities depend upon the configuration of the servers (this model includes some types of multi-class queueing system); switching between service regimes is instantaneous. Several different levels of control of the service regimes are considered. Our results for the N-queue system require randomisation of service configurations but we have studied the two queue system in situations where there is less control. We use the semi-martingale methods described in Fayolle, Malyshev and Menshikov [3] and our results generalise Kurkova [8] and complement Foley and McDonald [4] and [5]. Set controllability of Markov jump switching Boolean control networks and its applications

In this article, a novel method is proposed for investigating the set controllability of Markov jump switching Boolean control networks (MJSBCNs). Specifically, the switching signal is described as a discrete-time homogeneous Markov chain. By resorting to the expectation and switching indicator function, an expectation system is constructed. Based on the expectation system, a novel verifiable condition is established for solving the set reachability of MJSBCNs. With the newly obtained results on set reachability, a necessary and sufficient condition is further derived for the set controllability of MJSBCNs. The obtained results are applied to Boolean control networks with Markov jump time delays. Examples are demonstrated to justify the theoretical results.

Immobilization of α-amylase in vinyl-polymer-based interpenetrating polymer networks

Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of poly(ethylene glycol), poly(vinyl alcohol) and polyacrylamide were prepared as a support for enzyme immobilization and kinetic studies were performed for the immobilization of -amylase. The effect of IPN composition on the extent of immobilization was investigated and the percentage of relative activity of the immobilized enzyme was evaluated as a function of the chemical architecture of the IPNs, pH and temperature, taking starch as a substrate. The kinetic constants and the maximum reaction velocity were also evaluated. The IPNs were characterized by IR spectral analysis.     

Dipolar relaxations in an epoxy-amine system

Dipolar relaxations in a reactive epoxy-amine system based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with 4,4^′-diaminodiphenylsulfone were studied with the Havriliak-Negami function. The system was cured isothermally at 140 °C using simultaneous kinetic and microdielectric studies.The relaxation time was calculated from the frequency f_max of the peak of the loss factor ε^′′ versus frequency f. A linear relation exists between the logarithm of the relaxation time τ and the glass transition temperature T_g. Then, logτ follows the Di Benedetto equation revisited by Pascault and Williams allowing the prediction of the relaxation time τ during cure.The unrelaxed permittivity at high frequency ε_u, the relaxed or static permittivity ε_s and the skewness parameter β were found independent on the conversion or the curing time. The distribution parameter α decreases as curing time t increases. The difficulty of orientation of dipoles in the electric field due to vitrification is responsible of these behaviours.
