A series of acrylic impact modifiers (AIMs) with different particle sizes ranging from 55.2 to 927.0 nm were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization, and the effect of the particle size on the brittle–ductile transition of impact‐modified poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was investigated. For each AIM, a series of PVC/AIM blends with compositions of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15 phr AIM in 100 phr PVC were prepared, and the Izod impact strengths of these blends were tested at 23 °C. For AIMs with particle sizes of 55.2, 59.8, 125.2, 243.2, and 341.1 nm, the blends fractured in the brittle mode when the concentration of AIM was lower than 10 phr, whereas the blends showed ductile fracture when the AIM concentration reached 10 phr. It was concluded that the brittle–ductile transition of the PVC/AIM blends was independent of the particle size in the range of 55.2–341.1 nm. When the particle size was greater than 341.1 nm, however, the brittle–ductile transition shifted to a higher AIM concentration with an increase in the particle size. Furthermore, the critical interparticle distance was found not to be the criterion of the brittle–ductile transition for the PVC/AIM blends. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper reports on the experimental investigation of the dynamic large deflection response of a portal frame impacted at its midspan by a body moving at a certain speed. Both the deflection and velocity vs. time curves of the midspan and the dynamic history of a number of desired locations were recorded during the process of response. On the basis of the test data, the momentum and kinetic energy conversion between the frame and the moving body in the impact process are realized, and the occurrence and expansion of plastic regions are described. Investigation results show that the initial collision is approximately ideally inelastic, and that the elastic deformation plays a considerable role in the response though the input energy is much larger than the maximum elastic energy capacity of the beam member; therefore, in a general impact, the energy ratio should not be regarded as a sufficient criterion for a rigid—plastic solution. The ratios of the impulse transferred to and the energy absorbed by the frame in the initial collision to that carried by the moving body before impact is only related to the ratiobetween the equivalent mass of the frame paticipating in the initial collision and the mass of the impacting body, having nothing to do with the impacting velocity to a certain extent.  相似文献

The research described in this paper presents a method for chemically modifying the surface of plant photosynthetic membranes in such a way that electrical contact can be made. Colloidal platinum was prepared, precipitated directly onto thylakoid membranes from aqueous solution, and entrapped on fiberglass filter paper. This composition of matter was capable of sustained simultaneous photoevolution of hydrogen and oxygen when irradiated at any wavelength (400–700 nm) in the chlorophyll absorption spectrum. Experimental data support the interpretation that part of the platinum metal catalyst is precipitated adjacent to the photosystem-I reduction site of photosynthesis and that electron transfer occurs across the interface between photosystem I and the catalyst. When contacted with metal electrodes, the thylakoid-platinum combination was capable of generating a sustained flow of current through an external load resistor. Procedures for preparing this material and experimental data on its catalytic and electronic properties are presented. Also presented is an analysis of the flow of photocurrent in terms of the interfacial electron transfer reactions that occur at the interfaces of the components of the assembly.  相似文献

 The grafting method that has successfully been applied to methacrylic acid and liquid crystalline monomers was expanded to prepare amphoteric carbon fiber surfaces using 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate as monomer. The obtained carbon fiber surfaces were characterized by contact angle and ζ-potential measurements. The expected basic behavior was not observed, instead an amphoteric character of the modified carbon fiber surface was found. The fiber surfaces display a basic character in the acidic pH-range, while they are acidic in the alkaline part of the pH-scale. An important influence is derived from the amount of initiator used to graft the monomers onto the fibers. The smaller the initiator concen-tration used during polymerization, the larger the amount of amino functionalities introduced to the carbon fiber surface. The wetting behavior versus water depends on the overall conformation of the immobilized polymer. During immersion into water the polymer acts hydrophobic, while during emersion, a hydrophilic character is observed, probably derived from conformational changes and swelling during the contact angle measure-ments in water.
