We report on the dramatic effect of increasing helix diameter on the hybridization of oligopyridine-dicarboxamide strands into double helices. Upon replacing a single pyridine by a 1,8-diazaanthracene unit within an oligomeric strand, a 4.7 A enlargement of the helix diameter occurs parallel to the long anthracene axis. This structure change results in a spectacular stabilization of the double helical hybrids derived from these strands (factors of over 10(7)). Detailed investigations of the hybridization process using X-ray crystallography, NMR, fluorescence measurements and molecular mechanics calculations allowed us to assign the duplex stabilization to two enthalpic effects. First, the increase in diameter results in an augmented surface, involved in intermolecular pi-pi stacking. Second, the enlarged diameter leads to a lower tilt angle of the helical strand, with respect to the helix axis, which in turn results in smaller dihedral angles at the aryl-amide linkages and thus a considerably lowered enthalpic cost of the spring-like extension of the strands during the hybridization process. These results provide novel insights into how subtle tuning of molecular components may result in considerable and rationalizable changes in double helical supramolecular architectures. 相似文献

A new organogelator based on a salicylideneaniline derivative with cholesterol moieties was synthesized, and it was proposed that it could gelate various organic solvents, such as 1-butanol, 1-octanol, butyl acetate, tetrachloromethane, benzene, toluene through combination with a gelation test. From the results of analysis by UV/Vis absorption, circular dichroism (CD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies and semiempirical (AM1) calculations, we believed that the gelator molecules could self-assemble into left-handed helical nanofibers through unimolecular layer packing, which further twisted into the thicker fibers and constructed 3D networks in the gel phase. Interestingly, the organogel exhibited strong fluorescence enhancement relative to a solution of the same concentration because of the formation of J aggregations. Meanwhile, photochromism of the organogel could take place under UV-light irradiation. Both strong fluorescence emission and photochromism properties were concurrent in one system based on a salicylideneaniline derivative. Polycyclic aromatic compounds consisting of four or five fused anthracene units were synthesized by PtCl2-catalyzed cycloisomerization as novel long expanded helicenes. These compounds have helical structures with significant stacking of the terminal anthracene moieties at 0.33 nm interlayer distance. In the UV-vis and fluorescence spectra, the absorption and emission bands were red-shifted as the number of fused anthracene units was increased. The characteristic broad and long-lived emission bands of the long analogues are explained by the excimer-like stabilization of the excited state. These photophysical data as well as their cyclic voltammetric data are discussed on the basis of the π-conjugation and interlayer π⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the molecular structures and the molecular orbitals.
