Observing seasonal variations of sea surface wind speed and significant wave height using TOPEX altimetry

One year of ocean topography experiment (TOPEX) altimeter data are used to study the seasonal variations of global sea surface wind speed and significant wave height. The major wind and wave zones of the world oceans are precisely identified, their seasonal variability and characteristics are quantitatively analyzed, and the diversity of global wind speed seasonality and the variability of significant wave height in response to sea surface wind speed are also revealed.

A wide class of heavy-tailed distributions and its applications

Let F(x) be a distribution function supported on [0, ∞) with an equilibrium distribution function F _e (x). In this paper we pay special attention to the hazard rate function r _e (x) of F _e (x), which is also called the equilibrium hazard rate (E.H.R.) of F(x). By the asymptotic behavior of r _e (x) we give a criterion to identify F(x) to be heavy-tailed or light-tailed. Moreover, we introduce two subclasses of heavy-tailed distributions, i.e., ℳ and ℳ*, where ℳ contains almost all the most important heavy-tailed distributions in the literature. Some further discussions on the closure properties of ℳ and ℳ* under convolution are given, showing that both of them are ideal heavy-tailed subclasses. In the paper we also study the model of independent difference ξ = Z − θ, where Z and θ are two independent and non-negative random variables. We give intimate relationships of the tail distributions of ξ and Z, as well as relationships of tails of their corresponding equilibrium distributions. As applications, we apply the properties of class ℳ to risk theory. In the final, some miscellaneous problems and examples are laid, showing the complexity of characterizations on heavy-tailed distributions by means of r _e (x).      

Local tunneling barrier height observations of NiAl(1 1 0)

Local work functions at individual atoms on a compound metal surface have been experimentally examined. The simultaneously obtained STM and local tunneling barrier height (LBH) images of NiAl(1 1 0) show that LBH at geometrically lower Ni sites is much higher than that at geometrically higher Al sites, indicating that each individual atom on the NiAl(1 1 0) surface has a specific potential barrier for relevant electrons.

Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Patterns Created by Capillary Force and Their Impact on Cell Migration

Cell migration plays a crucial role in a variety of physiological and pathological processes.In this study a method of capillary force lithography was used to treat poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDADMAC) multilayers with a PDMS stamp before or after etching by NaC1 solution,yielding physical patterns with various features such as double thin lines,double strips,meniscus-shaped ridges,and high ridges.The ridge height is controllable in the range of 25 and 1100 nm.Migration of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) was restrained by the double-line patterns in a ridge height-dependent manner.By contrast,the mobility of SMCs was controlled by both the hydration ratio of the multilayers and the pattern features.
