Indestructibility and stationary reflection

If κ < λ are such that κ is a strong cardinal whose strongness is indestructible under κ ‐strategically closed forcing and λ is weakly compact, then we show that A = {δ < κ | δ is a non‐weakly compact Mahlo cardinal which reflects stationary sets} must be unbounded in κ. This phenomenon, however, need not occur in a universe with relatively few large cardinals. In particular, we show how to construct a model where no cardinal is supercompact up to a Mahlo cardinal in which the least supercompact cardinal κ is also the least strongly compact cardinal, κ 's strongness is indestructible under κ ‐strategically closed forcing, κ 's supercompactness is indestructible under κ ‐directed closed forcing not adding any new subsets of κ, and δ is Mahlo and reflects stationary sets iff δ is weakly compact. In this model, no strong cardinal δ < κ is indestructible under δ ‐strategically closed forcing. It therefore follows that it is relatively consistent for the least strong cardinal κ whose strongness is indestructible under κ ‐strategically closed forcing to be the same as the least supercompact cardinal, which also has its supercompactness indestructible under κ ‐directed closed forcing not adding any new subsets of κ (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A Hunziker-van Winter-Zhislin theorem for a four-particle lattice Schrödinger operator

We consider a discrete Schrödinger operator for four arbitrary particles with short-range pair potentials. We describe the position and the structure of its essential spectrum and prove the Hunziker-van Winter-Zhislin theorem.     

Equicompact sets of operators defined on Banach spaces

Let and be Banach spaces. We say that a set denotes the space of all compact operators from into ) is equicompact if there exists a null sequence in such that for all and all . It is easy to show that collectively compactness and equicompactness are dual concepts in the following sense: is equicompact iff is collectively compact. We study some properties of equicompact sets and, among other results, we prove: 1) a set is equicompact iff each bounded sequence in has a subsequence such that is a converging sequence uniformly for ; 2) if does not have finite cotype and is a maximal equicompact set, then, given and a finite set in , there is an operator such that for and all .

The attractors for the nonhomogeneous nonautonomous Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we consider the attractors for the two-dimensional nonautonomous Navier-Stokes equations in nonsmooth bounded domain Ω with nonhomogeneous boundary condition u=φ on ∂Ω. Assuming , which is translation compact and φ∈L^∞(∂Ω), we establish the existence of the uniform attractor in L²(Ω) and .     

Compact elements in the lattice of radicals

Summary A radical R, in the sense of Kurosh--Amitsur, is said to be compact if, given any collection of radicals X such that R &le;;VX, we have R &le;;VX&apos; for some finite subcollection X&apos; of X. A ring A is said to be radical compact if the lower radical on the singleton {A} is compact. This paper explores the relationship between radical compact rings and rings satisfying certain finiteness conditions. Closure properties of the class of all radical compact rings are also investigated.

Four-Dimensional Compact Projective Planes with a Solvable Collineation Group

We consider a four-dimensional compact projective plane whose collineation group is six-dimensional and solvable with a nilradical N isomorphic to Nil×R, where Nil denotes the three-dimensional, simply connected, non-Abelian, nilpotent Lie group. We assume that fixes a flag p W, acts transitively on and fixes no point in the set W\p. Under these conditions, we will prove that either contains a three-dimensional group of elations or acts doubly transitively on .
