An integrable semi-discrete equation and combinatorial numbers with their combinatorial interpretations

A Hankel type determinant solution for an integrable semi-discrete equation is presented. As an application, the relations between the solution and combinatorial numbers are discussed, which lead to new combinatorial numbers. The so-called Motzkin-like numbers are obtained, and the corresponding combinatorial interpretation is given. Additionally, it is also shown that some lattice paths have connections with the special solution.     

A note on determinants,minors and a boundary map

We give an explicit formula for the first non-trivial boundary map of the Akin–Buchsbaum–Weyman resolution (Schur functors and Schur complexes, Adv. Math 1982;44:207-278). The role of the Laplace expansion formula is emphasized.

A remark on the Kochen-Specker theorem and some characterizations of the determinant on sets of Hermitian matrices

In this paper we describe the general forms of all (nonlinear) continuous functionals on the sets of positive definite, positive semi-definite and Hermitian matrices which are multiplicative on the commuting elements. As a consequence, we obtain some new characterizations of the determinant on those classes of matrices.

Vector bundles with a fixed determinant on an irreducible nodal curve

LetM be the moduli space of generalized parabolic bundles (GPBs) of rankr and degree dona smooth curveX. LetM _−L be the closure of its subset consisting of GPBs with fixed determinant− L. We define a moduli functor for whichM _−L is the coarse moduli scheme. Using the correspondence between GPBs onX and torsion-free sheaves on a nodal curveY of whichX is a desingularization, we show thatM _−L can be regarded as the compactified moduli scheme of vector bundles onY with fixed determinant. We get a natural scheme structure on the closure of the subset consisting of torsion-free sheaves with a fixed determinant in the moduli space of torsion-free sheaves onY. The relation to Seshadri-Nagaraj conjecture is studied.     

Generalized triangulations and diagonal-free subsets of stack polyominoes

For n?3, let Ω_n be the set of line segments between vertices in a convex n-gon. For j?1, a j-crossing is a set of j distinct and mutually intersecting line segments from Ω_n such that all 2j endpoints are distinct. For k?1, let Δ_n,k be the simplicial complex of subsets of Ω_n not containing any (k+1)-crossing. For example, Δ_n,1 has one maximal set for each triangulation of the n-gon. Dress, Koolen, and Moulton were able to prove that all maximal sets in Δ_n,k have the same number k(2n-2k-1) of line segments. We demonstrate that the number of such maximal sets is counted by a k×k determinant of Catalan numbers. By the work of Desainte-Catherine and Viennot, this determinant is known to count quite a few other objects including fans of non-crossing Dyck paths. We generalize our result to a larger class of simplicial complexes including some of the complexes appearing in the work of Herzog and Trung on determinantal ideals.
