Composition catalysts of ethylbenzene oxidation based on bis(acetylacetonato)nickel(ii) and phase transfer catalysts as ligands 1. Macrocyclic polyethers

The addition of the macrocyclic polyether 18-Crown-6 (18C6) increases the selectivity of oxidation of ethylbenzene to -phenylethylhydroperoxide (PEH) in the presence of Ni(acac)₂. The initial oxidation rate, selectivity and degree of conversion of ethylbenzene to PEH are greater than those catalyzed by Ni(acac)₂ only. The efficiency of the macrocyclic ligand as an activator of Ni(acac)₂ exceeds that of monodentate donor ligands. The high selectivity of the process is due to both the primary Ni(acac)₂ · 18C6 complexes and the products of their transformation in the course of oxidation. Growth kinetics and phenolics production inGlycine Max cell suspension cultures

Glycine max was used as a model plant cell suspension culture to establish relationships among growth kinetics, phenolics production, elicitor action, and peroxidase activity. Timing of elictor addition through monitoring of peroxidase provided an excellent means of optimizing yields of phenolics and reduced the time span during which phenolics were formed, negating the need for a secondary production medium. We have also determined that calcium and other cellular effectors like polyamines and organic osmolytes, when used in conjunction with elicitors, enhance phenolics production. Calcium directly enhanced elicitation, whereas polyamines and other osmolytes such as glycerol and proline extended cell viability. The study also demonstrated potential for enhancing secondary metabolite production by a combination of elicitation, cell viability stabilizers, and by addition of nutrients at the time of elicitation.     

Characterization and complementation of a Pichia stipitis mutant unable to grow on d-xylose or l-arabinose

Pichia stipitis CBS 6054 will grow on d-xylose, d-arabinose, and l-arabinose. d-Xylose and l-arabinose are abundant in seed hulls of maize, and their utilization is important in processing grain residues. To elucidate the degradation pathway for l-arabinose, we obtained a mutant, FPL-MY30, that was unable to grow on d-xylose and l-arabinose but that could grow on d-arabinitol. Activity assays of oxidoreductase and pentulokinase enzymes involved in d-xylose, d-arabinose, and l-arabinose pathways indicated that FPL-MY30 is deficient in d-xylitol dehydrogenase (D-XDH), d- and l-arabinitol dehydrogenases, and d-ribitol dehydrogenase. Transforming FPL-MY30 with a gene for xylitol dehydrogenase (PsXYL2), which was cloned from CBS 6054 (Gen Bank AF127801), restored the D-XDH activity and the capacity for FPL-MY30 to grow on l-arabinose. This suggested that FPL-MY30 is critically deficient in XYL2 and that the d-xylose and l-arabinose metabolic pathways have xylitolas a common intermediate. The capacity for FPL-MY30 to grow on d-arabinitol could proceed through d-ribulose.     

Determination of the Enantiomeric Purity of l-Carnitine and Acetyl-l-Carnitine by Chiral Liquid Chromatography

A chiral liquid chromatographic method for determination of the enantiomeric purity of both l-carnitine and acetyl-l-carnitine is described. Separation of the enantiomers of dl-carnitine and acetyl-dl-carnitine was achieved on a commercial chiral column (Chiralcel OD-R) after derivatization with (alpha-bromo)methyl phenyl ketone. Introduction of this lipophilic UV chromophoric group to the carnitine and acetylcarnitine molecules improved their retention, resolution, and UV detection. The mobile phase was 74:26 (v/v) 0.5 mol L^-1 sodium perchlorate–acetonitrile, pH 3.8, and the flow rate was 0.4 mL min^-1. Detection was performed at 235 nm. The method is selective and reliable for determination of the enantiomeric purity of bulk drug substances l-carnitine and acetyl-l-carnitine.     

d-xylose transport by Candida succiphila and Kluyveromyces marxianus

The kinetics and regulation of d-xylose uptake were investigated in the efficient pentose fermentor Candida succiphila, and in Kluyveromyces marxianus, which assimilate but do not ferment pentose sugars. Active high-affinity (K _m ∼ 3.8 mM; V _max ∼ 15 nmol/[mg·min]) and putative facilitated diffusion low-affinity (K _m ∼ 140 mM; V _max ∼ 130 nmol/[mg·min]) transport activities were found in C. succiphila grown, respectively, on xylose or glucose. K. marxianus showed facilitated diffusion low-affinity (K _m ∼ 103 mM; V _max ∼ 190 nmol/[mg·min]) transport activity when grown on xylose under microaerobic conditions, and both a low-affinity and an active high-affinity (K _m ∼ 0.2 mM; V _max ∼ 10 nmol/[mg·min]) transport activity when grown on xylose under fully aerobic conditions.     

Molecular structure of potassium [N,N′-bis(salicylideneamino)nitroguanidonate-N,N′,-O,O′]nickel(ii), the product of condensation of (salicylideneamino)nitroguanidine with salicylaldehyde on a Ni2+ ion template

The crystal structure of the product of the condensation of (salicylideneamino)nitroguanidine with salicylaldehyde on a Ni²⁺ ion template, K[Ni(C₁₅H₁₀N₅O₄)] · DMF, has been studied. It was established that a planar Ni complex, consisting of isolated [NiL]^– anions and solvated [K⁺ · DMF] cations, is formed. The negative charge of the anion is localized mainly on the O atoms of the nitro group. The nitroguanidine fragment of the ligand occurs in the tautomeric form, which was not reported previously.Deceased in 1995Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Synthesis and characterisation of bis(pentafluorophenyl)antimony(V) cations, [(C6F5)2SbL3]

Pentacoordinate complex cations of the general formula [(C₆F₅)₂SbL₃]³⁺ stabilized as solid salts in combination with tetraphenylborate (BPh₄), tetrafluorobroate (BF₄) anions, where L=DMSO, Ph₃AsO, PyO, DMF, α-, β- and γ-picoline have been isolated. The newly formed complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance measurements, solid-state IR and and NMR. From these results, a five-fold coordination around antimony was required.     

Synthesis and some properties of phosphorus-substituted azomethines

A series of phosphorus(iii)-substituted azomethines and enamines were synthesized by the reaction of lithium salts of aldimines and ketimines with derivatives of phosphorus(iii) acids. Purification and characterization of an extracellular α-l-arabinofuranosidase from Fusarium oxysporum

An α-l-arabinofuranosidase from Fusarium oxysporum F3 was purified to homogeneity by a two-step ion exchange intercalated by a gel filtration chromatography. The enzyme had a molecular mass of 66 kDa and was optimally active at pH 6.0 and 60°C. It hydrolyzed aryl α-l-arabinofuranosides and cleaved arabinosyl side chains from arabinoxylan and arabinan. There was a marked synergistic effect between the α-l-arabinofuranosidase and an endo-(1 →4)-β-d-xylanase produced by F. oxysporum in the extensive hydrolysis of arabinoxylan.
