地球灾变的生物学意义——《祸从天降——恐龙灭绝之谜》一书读后

本文就许靖华教授《祸从天降——恐龙灭绝之谜》一书,讨论地球灾变的生物学意义。作者认为:地球灾变事实的发现没有否定,而是补充和丰富自然选择理论,达尔文主义强调生物进化的渐变性和连续性;生物进化的灾变说强调生物进化的间断性;这是两种不同的自然观。但是,不能认为它们是相互否定的,而是相互补充的。生物学研究既把渐变论作为工作哲学,又把灾变论作为工作哲学,前者适用于生物进化的渐变时期,后者适用于生物进化的灾变(环境危机)时期。     

Statistical approach to light scattering from deformed textured heterogeneous polymer materials

A statistical theory of light scattering from deformed isotropic and textured heterogeneous polymer materials is formulated. Two types of textured structures are analyzed: assemblies of optically isotropic and anisotropic rods and a spatially anisotropic distribution of isotropic spherical inclusion centers. The small-angle H_v light-scattering patterns are calculated. The appearance of scattering from isotropic rods and spheres in deformed materials has been demonstrated. The changes of the H_v scattering patterns as a function of elongation and strucuture parameters are discussed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

小波－矩量法以小波基作为矩量法中的基函数，通过Ｇａｌｅｒｋｉｎ法可以获得很稀疏的阻抗矩阵，用迭代法求解时可减少计算机内存和计算时间。该文以有限尺寸的频率选择反射面为例，用小波－矩量法分析散射特性和电流分布，着重讨论了阻抗矩阵的稀疏化程度对计算精度的影响。结果表明，当非零元素仅为１０％时，仍能达到满意的精度，因此小波－矩量法不失为分析电大尺寸问题的一种有效方法     

Cellulose-based fibers from liquid–crystalline solutions. II. Processing and morphology of acetate/butyrate esters

Fibers were spun from isotropic and anisotropic dimethylacetamide solutions of cellulose esters. Take-up speeds of the dry jet/wet spinning process varied. Water served as the coagulant. The mechanical properties of the fibers increased as spinning progressed from the isotropic to the anisotropic state of the solution. A trade-off in solubility and fiber properties was noted as the butyryl acetyl ratio decreased. Whereas high butyryl content enhances both overall solubility and the formation of liquid–crystalline solutions at lower concentration, it results in lower fiber modulus and strength. Morphology of the fibers depended on the coagulation rate which was influenced by the concentration of the sppinning solution. The level of orientation and crystallinity of the fibers increased somewhat when they were spun from liquid-crystalline solutions. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Excess enthalpies of mixing tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran with some chloroalkanes at 26.9°C

Excess enthalpies of mixing H _m ^E of tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran with trichloromethane, tetrachloromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane have been determined at 26.9°C and are found to be negative over the entire composition range for both sets of the ether mixtures. H _m ^E decreases in the sequence; dichloroethane > tetrachloromethane > trichloroethane > trichloromethane > tetrachloroethane. The results are explained on the basis of strong O...H-C and weak Cl...O specific interactions. Flory's theory has been used to correlate the experimental data with good agreement found between the theoretical and experimental values of H _m ^E .     

Critical evaluation of gas standards based on hydrogen

Summary Six commercial hydrogen standards containing helium, oxygen, nitrogen, methane and carbon dioxide at trace levels were analyzed by gas chromatography, for periods up to 105 days. The concentrations, in the range of 0–120 μmol mol⁻¹, were stable (with the exception of oxygen) but often significantly different from the certified values provided by the suppliers, especially for helium, oxygen and nitrogen. Concurrently, some experiments were carried out to verify the stability of gas mixtures based on hydrogen stored in cylinders submitted to different chemical and physical treatments. The causes that led to the deviations observed, as well as the decreases in oxygen, are discussed. Presented at the 21^st ISC held in Stuttgart, Germany, 15^th–20^th September, 1996.

Estimates for the Rapid Decay of Concentration Functions of n-Fold Convolutions

We estimate the concentration functions of n-fold convolutions of one-dimensional probability measures. The Kolmogorov–Rogozin inequality implies that for nondegenerate distributions these functions decrease at least as O(n ^–1/2). On the other hand, Esseen⁽³⁾ has shown that this rate is o(n ^–1/2) iff the distribution has an infinite second moment. This statement was sharpened by Morozova.⁽⁹⁾ Theorem 1 of this paper provides an improvement of Morozova's result. Moreover, we present more general estimates which imply the rates o(n ^–1/2).
