Steady film flow along a vertical wall with isolated step changes is studied numerically for Reynolds numbers Re ∼ O(10−3–102) and capillary numbers Ca ∼ O(10−2–101). The lengthscale of free surface capillary features upstream of a step-in or step-out decreases uniformly with Re and switches from a −1/3 to a −1/2 power-law dependence on Ca. The height of the capillary features first grows with Re, but eventually diminishes when inertia forces overpower capillary forces. Simultaneously, the key dynamics move from upstream to downstream of the step, and switch from capillary arrest to inertial re-directioning of the falling liquid. The latter mechanism involves a low-pressure region originating from the edge of the step. At a step-out, a new free surface feature appears with increasing Re, which is caused by liquid overshoot in the horizontal direction and is restrained initially by capillary and subsequently by inertial forces. Simple scaling arguments are shown to predict many of the above characteristics. 相似文献

We compare step morphologies on surfaces of Al-rich metallic alloys, both quasicrystalline and crystalline. We present evidence that the large-scale step structure observed on Al-rich quasicrystals after quenching to room temperature reflects equilibrium structure at an elevated temperature. These steps are relatively rough, i.e., have high diffusivity, compared to those on crystalline surfaces. For the fivefold quasicrystal surface, step diffusivity increases as step height decreases, but this trend is not obeyed in a broader comparison between quasicrystals and crystals. On a shorter scale, the steps on Al-rich alloys tend to exhibit local facets (short linear segments), with different facet lengths, a feature which could develop during quenching to room temperature. The quantum states and energy spectrum of an electron in a rectangular step quantum well in a magnetic field parallel to the plane of two-dimensional electronic gas are investigated. It is shown that the joint effect of a magnetic field and confining potential of quantum well results in radical change of the electron energy spectrum. The energy dependencies on the parameters of the quantum well and magnetic field induction are investigated. We have measured how the initial terrace width l0 on vicinal Si(1 1 1) surfaces influences the rate of step bunching and the minimum terrace width within a bunch when direct-current heated at 940-1290 °C. A comparison of this data with analytic solutions and numerical simulations of the conventional “sharp-step” model give strong evidence that the kinetic length d is relatively small (d < ∼20 nm) in both temperature regime I (∼850-950 °C) and regime III (∼1200-1300 °C), in which step-down current is required for step bunching. This indicates that surface mass transport is diffusion-limited in both regimes I and III when l0 > 20 nm, and hence that the adatom attachment- and terrace diffusion-hopping rates are of comparable magnitude. We also observe similar scaling with initial terrace width in temperature regime II (∼1040-1190 °C), in which step-up current is required for bunching, suggesting a similar step bunching mechanism in all three temperature regimes. 相似文献
