Effect of the pore surface modification of an inorganic substrate on the plasma‐grafting behavior of pore‐filling‐type organic/inorganic composite membranes

We have investigated the effect of the surface state and surface treatment of the pores of an inorganic substrate on the plasma‐grafting behavior of pore‐filling‐type organic/inorganic composite membranes. Shirasu porous glass (SPG) was used as the inorganic substrate, and methyl acrylate was used as the grafting monomer. The grafting rate increased as the density of silanol on the SPG substrate increased. This result suggests that radicals are generated mainly at the silanol groups on the pore surface by plasma irradiation. The SPG substrates were treated with silane coupling agents used to control the mass of organic material bonded to the pore surface. The thickness of the grafted layer became thinner as the mass of organic material bonded to the pore surface of SPG increased. This decrease in the thickness of the grafted layer could be explained by the decrease in the penetration depth of vacuum ultraviolet rays contained in plasma having a wavelength of less than 160 nm that generated radicals in the pores of the substrate. The thickness of the grafted layer inside the SPG substrates could be controlled through the control of the mass of organic material bonded to the pore surface of the SPG substrate. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Commutators of singular integrals on spaces of homogeneous type

In this work we prove some sharp weighted inequalities on spaces of homogeneous type for the higher order commutators of singular integrals introduced by R. Coifman, R. Rochberg and G. Weiss in Factorization theorems for Hardy spaces in several variables, Ann. Math. 103 (1976), 611–635. As a corollary, we obtain that these operators are bounded on L ^p (w) when w belongs to the Muckenhoupt’s class A _p , p > 1. In addition, as an important tool in order to get our main result, we prove a weighted Fefferman-Stein type inequality on spaces of homogeneous type, which we have not found previously in the literature.     

Algorithmic analysis of theMAP/PH/1 retrial queue

In this paper the distribution of the maximum number of customers in a retrial orbit for a single server queue with Markovian arrival process and phase type services is studied. Efficient algorithm for computing the probability distribution and some interesting numerical examples are presented.     

Differential geometry of tensor product immersions

In this article we obtain the best possible estimates of the type number of tensor product immersions and investigate tensor product immersions with lowest possible type. Several classification theorems in this respect are then proved.     

A Monte Carlo method for an objective Bayesian procedure

This paper describes a method for an objective selection of the optimal prior distribution, or for adjusting its hyper-parameter, among the competing priors for a variety of Bayesian models. In order to implement this method, the integration of very high dimensional functions is required to get the normalizing constants of the posterior and even of the prior distribution. The logarithm of the high dimensional integral is reduced to the one-dimensional integration of a cerain function with respect to the scalar parameter over the range of the unit interval. Having decided the prior, the Bayes estimate or the posterior mean is used mainly here in addition to the posterior mode. All of these are based on the simulation of Gibbs distributions such as Metropolis' Monte Carlo algorithm. The improvement of the integration's accuracy is substantial in comparison with the conventional crude Monte Carlo integration. In the present method, we have essentially no practical restrictions in modeling the prior and the likelihood. Illustrative artificial data of the lattice system are given to show the practicability of the present procedure.

Efficient synthesis of CCR5 antagonist, 2,3-dihydro-1-benzothiepine derivatives by improved intramolecular Claisen type reaction using dialkylcarbonate

The efficient synthesis of 2,3-dihydro-1-benzothiepine derivatives 4 has been developed. The intramolecular Claisen type reaction of the new products, 4-(o-formylphenylthio)butyrate 9, with alcoholate in dialkylcarbonate as a solvent afforded 4 in good yields. According to this new procedure, we have accomplished the practical preparation of CCR5 antagonist 1 as a candidate for oral HIV-1 therapy.     

Crystallization of chiral compounds. 1. Spectroscopic,thermochemical, and crystallographic investigation of homochiral and racemic glycidyl p-toluenesulfonate

Crystalline specimens of homochiral and racemic glycidyl p-toluenesulfonate were studied by IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The melting phase diagram of glycidyl p-toluenesulfonate was constructed. The stacking effect in the crystals of the racemic sulfonate is responsible for a more dense molecular packing, with the result that a heterochiral type of crystallization becomes more favorable.     

Evaluation of Orbital- and Ground State Energies of Some Open- and Closed-Shell Atoms over Integer and Noninteger Slater Type Orbitals

Ab initio calculations of the orbital and the ground state energies of some open- and closed-shell atoms over Slater type orbitals with quantum numbers integer and Slater type orbitals with quantum numbers noninteger have been performed. In order to increase the efficiency of these calculations the atomic two-electron integrals were expressed in terms of incomplete beta function. Results were observed to be in good agreement with the literature.
