Twenty-five years of international collaboration in reference materials via ISO/REMCO

This paper looks back on a quarter century of history of the Council Committee on Reference Materials of the International Organization for Standardization – REMCO. It begins however with the period before its formation in 1976 to describe how the Committee came into being as a response to a growing need by the analytical community for the number and variety of reference materials (RMs) as well as a need for the assurance of the quality of RMs and ends with a view of REMCO activities in the near future. This is not intended as a detailed history but instead to describe the evolution of REMCO by identifying major activities and accomplishments of REMCO. The reference shrinkage curve of clay soil

The objective of this work is to develop and validate a model that predicts the reference soil shrinkage curve, that is one without crack volume contribution, as a necessary preliminary step in future estimation of soil crack volume from soil shrinkage data. Current soil shrinkage models are based on the approximation of soil shrinkage data by some a priori taken mathematical expressions and justified by the fitting of their parameters to the data. However, the crack volume entering the data is not single valued and depends on shrinkage conditions. Unlike that the reference shrinkage curve is single valued. For soils with sufficiently high clay content when there are no large pores (lacunar pores) inside the intra-aggregate clay, the reference shrinkage curve is derived from the assumption of the rigid superficial (interface) layer of aggregates with changed pore-size range and distribution compared with the intra-aggregate matrix. This consideration is based on accounting for contributions of the interface aggregate layer and intra-aggregate matrix to the soil volume and water content during shrinkage. The reference shrinkage curve is predicted by eight fundamental physical immediately measured parameters of (i) the intra-aggregate matrix (including clay content); (ii) the aggregate structure; and (iii) the mean silt-sand grain size or mean interface layer thickness. The model was validated using the data for eight soils. In addition to the major potential application for estimating a soil crack volume, the model explains differences between the observed shrinkage curves of soil and pure clay, and it can have other numerous applications.     

开发面向分析化学的复杂方程绘图求解软件

化学平衡的精确解析会涉及复杂方程的求解,而分析化学专业人员通常不完全具备相关算法和编程知识。所以,尽管当前硬件发达、编程语言丰富,精确解析仍然难以在分析化学课程中大规模推广。为此,基于Matlab语言,开发了具有针对性的方程求解软件。该软件以简洁的界面、直观的图像和自然的人机交互,实现方程的高效求解;对用户的编程要求非常低。期望通过这种方式,显著降低化学平衡精确解析中的软件使用成本,从而为大规模推广提供进一步的支持。本文介绍了该软件的基本原理和主要特点;通过3个复杂化学平衡实例,详细说明软件的使用方法以及注意事项。另外提供Android系统版本,免费使用。

功能完善的地质工程监测系统在水电工程、环境工程及露天采矿工程等等中的重要性己日益显露出来。为此, 本文提出了地质工程监测信息系统的构想, 并从开发方法选择、功能需求分析、系统设计特征及系统开发实施四个主要方面, 对地质工程监测信息系统开发中若干重要问题进行了探讨。     

Improved operator comfort and off-road capability through pendulum arm technology

The Nordic forest industry requires just-in-time wood deliveries. Operations must continue regardless of season, weather and terrain. Soil compaction and deep ruts must be avoided while providing high performance and a reasonable working environment for operators.The Xt28 pendulum arm forwarder is a full-size concept forwarder with six hydrostatic propelled wheels on pendulum arms built on a three-piece frame connected with two articulation joints. The Xt28 concept machine was tested according to Skogforsk standard machine tests. Rut depth test focused on soil interaction where rut depth was measured related to number of passes. Machine dynamics were measured using standardized test track with focus on operator comfort.The project proved the potential of pendulum arm technology in off-road transportation. Automatic pendulum arm levelling, equalized ground pressure between wheels and improved operator comfort through reducing adverse vibrations and roll angles, simultaneously reducing dynamic forces transferred to the forest floor. Pendulum arm technology improves travel speed in adverse terrain, providing unparalleled side slope capability and enhanced productivity.     

Element assessment in whole blood, serum and urine of three Italian healthy sub-populations by INAA

This research, that is a framework of a big project regarding the knowledge of human metabolism in patients affected by renal disease, is aimed to assess the levels of some selected essential (Co, Fe, K, Na, Rb, Se and Zn) and non-essential elements (Br Cr, Cs, Hg, Ni and Sb) in different biological matrices such as whole blood, serum and urine, of three Italian sub-populations.The analytical methodology involved is the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), a primary analytical technique: the samples (totally 144) were irradiated in the Triga nuclear reactor at the R.C.-Casaccia ENEA for 12 h at a neutron flux of 2.6 × 10¹² n × cm^{− 2} × s^{− 1}.The results show a similar distribution for essential elements whereas quite different for non-essential elements. The statistical treatment has evidenced no differences among the samples grouping the subpopulations into unique one. In this way, the levels found can be considered “reference values” in the investigated matrices.
