On active redundancy allocation for coherent systems—from the viewpoint of minimal cut decomposition

This paper deals with coherent systems with one active redundancy. For systems with the subclass of minimal cuts associated with one component covering that of another, assigning the redundancy to the former component is proved to bring forth a more reliable redundant system. As for symmetric systems with lower tail permutation decreasing component lifetimes, allocating the redundancy to the less reliable component results in a longer system lifetime. Several numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the new findings.     

Moving-centre monotonicity formulae for minimal submanifolds and related equations

Monotonicity formulae play a crucial role for many geometric PDEs, especially for their regularity theories. For minimal submanifolds in a Euclidean ball, the classical monotonicity formula implies that if such a submanifold passes through the centre of the ball, then its area is at least that of the equatorial disk. Recently Brendle and Hung proved a sharp area bound for minimal submanifolds when the prescribed point is not the centre of the ball, which resolved a conjecture of Alexander, Hoffman and Osserman. Their proof involves asymptotic analysis of an ingeniously chosen vector field, and the divergence theorem.In this article we prove a sharp ‘moving-centre’ monotonicity formula for minimal submanifolds, which implies the aforementioned area bound. We also describe similar moving-centre monotonicity formulae for stationary p-harmonic maps, mean curvature flow and the harmonic map heat flow.

Free boundary minimal hypersurfaces with spherical boundary

We first prove that a compact embedded minimal annulus in meeting two concentric spheres perpendicularly along the boundaries is part of a plane. We also prove that an embedded minimal hypersurface lying outside of a ball is part of either a catenoid or a hyperplane if it is perpendicular to the sphere along the boundary and has only one end that is asymptotic to either a catenoid if , or a hyperplane if .     

Collapsing and the convex hull property in a soap film capillarity model

Soap films hanging from a wire frame are studied in the framework of capillarity theory. Minimizers in the corresponding variational problem are known to consist of positive volume regions with boundaries of constant mean curvature/pressure, possibly connected by “collapsed” minimal surfaces. We prove here that collapsing only occurs if the mean curvature/pressure of the bulky regions is negative, and that, when this last property holds, the whole soap film lies in the convex hull of its boundary wire frame.     

On the Minimal Solutions of Variational Inequalities in Orlicz-Sobolev Spaces

In this paper, the author studies the existence of the minimal nonnegative solutions of some elliptic variational inequalities in Orlicz-Sobolev spaces on bounded or unbounded domains. She gets some comparison results between different solutions as tools to pass to the limit in the problems and to show the existence of the minimal solutions of the variational inequalities on bounded domains or unbounded domains. In both cases,coercive and noncoercive operators are handled. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of the minimal nonnegative solution of the noncoercive variational inequality on bounded domains are established.     

Traveling wave solutions in a diffusive system with two preys and one predator

This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions in a diffusive system with two preys and one predator. By constructing upper and lower solutions, the existence of nontrivial traveling wave solutions is established. The asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions is also confirmed by combining the asymptotic spreading with the contracting rectangles. Applying the theory of asymptotic spreading, the nonexistence of traveling wave solutions is proved.

On the multidimensional extension of countermonotonicity and its applications

In a 2-dimensional space, Fréchet–Hoeffding upper and lower bounds define comonotonicity and countermonotonicity, respectively. Similarly, in the multidimensional case, comonotonicity can be defined using the Fréchet–Hoeffding upper bound. However, since the multidimensional Fréchet–Hoeffding lower bound is not a distribution function, there is no obvious extension of countermonotonicity in multidimensions. This paper investigates in depth a new multidimensional extension of countermonotonicity. We first provide an equivalent condition for countermonotonicity in 2-dimension, and extend the definition of countermonotonicity into multidimensions. In order to justify such extensions, we show that newly defined countermonotonic copulas constitute a minimal class of copulas. Two applications will be provided. First, we will study the relationships between multidimensional countermonotonicity and such well-known multivariate concordance measures as Kendall’s tau or Spearman’s rho. Second, we will give a financial interpretation of multidimensional countermonotonicity via the existing herd behavior index.
