Ionization of aqueous toluic acids: Conductance and thermodynamics

Conductivities of aqueous solutions ofortho-, meta-, andpara-toluic acids have been measured for the concentration range 0.1–2 millimolar and at 5° intervals from 5 to 100°C. At each temperature pK _a(m) andA ₀ have been calculated using the paired ion model recently described by Fuoss. Thermodynamic parameters have been calculated for the ionization of each acid, and Walden products for the anions. Results are discussed in terms of contributions to acidity by enthalpy and entropy changes as well as by hydration of the various solute species.     

Synthetic studies on neomarinone: practical and efficient stereoselective synthesis of the side chain

A practical and efficient stereoselective synthesis of the side chain of neomarinone is reported. The synthesis was achieved in six steps (41% overall yield) from 2-methyl-2-cyclohexenone. The key step is a novel stereoselective 1,4-conjugate addition/enolate alkylation by an epoxide-opening reaction.     

On the Permanental Polynomials of Some Graphs

Let G be a simple graph with adjacency matrix A(G) and (G,x) the permanental polynomial of G. Let G × H denotes the Cartesian product of graphs G and H. Inspired by Kleins idea to compute the permanent of some matrices (Mol. Phy. 31 (3) (1976) 811–823), in this paper in terms of some orientation of graphs we study the permanental polynomial of a type of graphs. Here are some of our main results.1.If G is a bipartite graph containing no subgraph which is an even subdivision of K _2,3, then G has an orientation G ^e such that (G,x) = det (xI-A(G ^e )), where A(G ^e ) denotes the skew adjacency matrix of G ^e.2.Let G be a 2-connected outerplanar bipartite graph with n vertices. Then there exists a 2-connected outerplanar bipartite graph with 2n+2 vertices such that (G,x) is a factor of .3.Let T be an arbitrary tree with n vertices. Multiplex amplified product-length polymorphism analysis of 36 mitochondrial single-nucleotide polymorphisms for haplogrouping of East Asian populations

We present a reliable, rapid, and economical multiplex amplified product-length polymorphism (APLP) method for analyzing the haplogroup-diagnostic mitochondrial single-nucleotide polymorphisms (mtSNPs) in East Asian populations. By examining only 36 haplogroup-specific mtSNPs in the coding region by using four 9-multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and subsequent electrophoresis, we could safely assign 1815 individuals from 8 populations of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Germans to 45 relevant haplogroups. This multiplex APLP analysis of coding-region mtSNPs for haplogrouping is especially useful not only for molecular phylogenetic studies but also for large-scale association studies due to its rapid and economical nature. This is the first panel of mtSNPs in the coding region to be used for haplogrouping of East Asian populations.     

Ring‐Rearrangement Metathesis

Ring‐rearrangement metathesis (RRM) refers to the combination of several metathesis transformations into a domino process, in which an endocyclic double bond of a cycloolefin reacts with an exocyclic alkene. RRM has proven to be a powerful method for the rapid construction of complex structures. The extension of the basic ring‐opening–ring‐closing metathesis process by further metathesis steps as well as an examination of the driving forces, limits, scope, recent advantages, and future perspectives of these domino sequences is presented with various examples, thus reflecting the high efficiency and utility of RRM in organic synthesis.     

Stereoselective synthesis of the cyclic ether core of (+)-laurenyne

A concise enantioselective synthesis of the cyclic ether core of the marine natural product (+)-laurenyne has been accomplished using ring-closing metathesis for medium-ring construction.     

High-resolution Hadamard transform microscope fluorescence imaging: quantifying the DNA content in single cells

This study presents a novel miniaturized Hadamard transform fluorescence imaging microscope, by combining a conventional fluorescence microscope with Hadamard transform multiplexing encoding using a one-dimensional movable mask to realize spatial resolution and a linear CCD for multichannel detection. The microscope can provide high-resolution automatically-generated 0–255 gray level HT images for morphological analysis and visualization of a single cell, and normalized HT images for cellular quantitative measurements. The microscopes imaging capability was applied to measure the DNA content in human lymphocyte, chicken erythrocyte and eel erythrocyte, and a comparative study was performed. The results show that the calibrated DNA content in a chicken erythrocyte is 2.32 pg when human lymphocyte is used as the standard, and eel erythrocyte may be a potentially reliable and novel standard for determining DNA contents in other species because it has a stable DNA value of 2.06 pg, with a CV of 4.3% when 20 eel erythrocytes are measured. The results also demonstrate that the HT imaging microscope should be valuable in the fields of medicine and cell biology.     

Acremines A-F, novel secondary metabolites produced by a strain of an endophytic Acremonium, isolated from sporangiophores of Plasmopara viticola in grapevine leaves

Six novel metabolites, acremines A-F have been isolated from agar cultures of a strain of Acremonium sp. Their structures and stereochemistry were elucidated using a combination of ¹³C and ¹H homo and heteronuclear 2D NMR experiments and X-ray analysis. Acremines A-D inhibited the germination of sporangia of Plasmopara viticola.     

Polarization Dependence of a Hydrophobized Electrode for Electrosynthesis of a Soluble Product

An equation for a polarization curve of a hydrophobized electrode is proposed for electrosynthesis of a soluble electroactive product in an inner-kinetic mode. The equation contains the concentration of the target product (TP) in an explicit form. The shape of the curve depends on the biquadratic root of the TP concentration and the square root of the ratio between exchange currents of the side and target reactions.
