The mechanical properties of Mater-Bi® are, in general, not adequate for certain applications and the addition of a filler is therefore necessary. Among the different fillers, natural fibres are particularly interesting because they potentially allow improving the performance of the material without compromising its biodegradability.In order to improve the basic mechanical properties of a Mater-Bi grade and to obtain a new, fully biodegradable material, wood flour based composites were prepared by different processing methods. To simulate actual and not laboratory bacterial attack on the prepared materials, in this work we studied the biodegradation of the composites in a real active sewage sludge reactor. In particular, the biodegradation rates were investigated with reference to different pre-treatments of the materials and different environmental conditions (summer and winter). The results showed that wood flour enhances the biodegradability of the materials. The results indicated also strong relationships between the surface roughness and the biodegradation rates (in particular, higher roughness leads to wider bacterial attack). The different processing techniques had direct effects on the overall biodegradation rates. In particular, when higher smoothness and packing is achieved, the biodegradation rate is lower. The mechanical analysis indicated that adding wood flour to Mater-Bi has positive effects on the elastic modulus, but when the bacterial attack becomes critical, a general sudden drop of the mechanical properties is observed. 相似文献

The effects of UV irradiation on β-nucleated injection-moulded polypropylenes (β-iPP) have been studied at several structural levels. Commercially available isotactic polypropylene was modified by 0.03 wt.% β-nucleating agent based on N,N′-dicyclohexylnaphthalene-2,6-dicarboxamide. β-iPP specimens were injection-moulded using a processing set-up in which only mould temperature was varied. It was found that specimens consisted of a skin-core structure, which was strongly influenced by varying mould temperatures. The structural development consequently affected the specimen degradability as shown by wide-angle X-ray scattering, light microscopy and micro-infrared microscopy. 相似文献

The flow and solidification of planar jets are analysed by means of an efficient inverse isotherm finite element method. The method is based on a tessellation that is constructed by isotherms as characteristic co-ordinate lines transverse to the flow direction. Thus opposite sides of finite elements lie on isotherms. The method allows the simultaneous determination of the location of the isotherms with the primary unknowns, namely, the velocity, the pressure, the temperature and the location of the free surface. Thus the determination of the location of the solidification front (which is known to pose significant computational difficulties) is automatic. This facilitates the control of the location of the solidification front by controlling macroscopic variables such as the flow rate, the cooling rate and the capillary design. The location of the solidification may then be suitably chosen to influence the frozen-in orientation and structure in extrusion of high-performance materials such as composites and polymers, in continuous casting of metals and in growth of crystals. 相似文献

In order to reduce the cost of large three-dimensional calculations of steady state free surfaces, we have combined a time-dependent approach, a decoupling algorithm and a conjugate gradient solver along the lines introduced earlier by Gresho and Chan. The free surface is calculated separately by applying the kinematic condition to a number of faces defined on the undeformed surface. For the pseudo-time-marching technique we show that it is economical to adopt different time steps for the free surface calculation and the other fields. The accuracy of the method is tested on the well-known circular die problem; the method is then used to reveal the effects of inertia and shear thinning on square and rectangular dies. 相似文献
