A sum operator equation and applications to nonlinear elastic beam equations and Lane-Emden-Fowler equations

This paper is concerned with an operator equation Ax+Bx+Cx=x on ordered Banach spaces, where A is an increasing α-concave operator, B is an increasing sub-homogeneous operator and C is a homogeneous operator. The existence and uniqueness of its positive solutions is obtained by using the properties of cones and a fixed point theorem for increasing general β-concave operators. As applications, we utilize the fixed point theorems obtained in this paper to study the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions for two classes nonlinear problems which include fourth-order two-point boundary value problems for elastic beam equations and elliptic value problems for Lane-Emden-Fowler equations.     

Estimates of operator moduli of continuity

In Aleksandrov and Peller (2010) [2] we obtained general estimates of the operator moduli of continuity of functions on the real line. In this paper we improve the estimates obtained in Aleksandrov and Peller (2010) [2] for certain special classes of functions. On a multiplicity one property for the length spectra of even dimensional compact hyperbolic spaces

We prove a multiplicity one theorem for the length spectrum of compact even dimensional hyperbolic spaces, i.e., if all but finitely many closed geodesics for two compact even dimensional hyperbolic spaces have the same length, then all closed geodesics have the same length.     

Metric adjusted skew information and uncertainty relation

We show that an uncertainty relation for Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information proved by Yanagi (2010) [10] can hold for an arbitrary quantum Fisher information under some conditions. This is a refinement of the result of Gibilisco and Isola (2011) [4].     

An operator-based approach to the analysis of ruin-related quantities in jump diffusion risk models

Recent developments in ruin theory have seen the growing popularity of jump diffusion processes in modeling an insurer’s assets and liabilities. Despite the variations of technique, the analysis of ruin-related quantities mostly relies on solutions to certain differential equations. In this paper, we propose in the context of Lévy-type jump diffusion risk models a solution method to a general class of ruin-related quantities. Then we present a novel operator-based approach to solving a particular type of integro-differential equations. Explicit expressions for resolvent densities for jump diffusion processes killed on exit below zero are obtained as by-products of this work.     

Remarks on the Operator Norm Localization Property

The author studies the metric spaces with operator norm localization property. It is proved that the operator norm localization property is coarsely invariant and is preserved under certain infinite union. In the case of finitely generated groups, the operator norm localization property is also preserved under the direct limits.     

On the weak-star extensibility

The paper encompasses a complete study of the weak-star extensibility of subspaces of Banach spaces introduced by B.S. Mordukhovich and B. Wang when studying the restrictive metric regularity in variational analysis. Many useful properties are presented; in particular, a new point of view and formulation of the property in the framework of Banach space theory is established. We also propose the concept of weak-star extensible Banach spaces that has interesting applications, and is fairly broad in that it contains many important classes of Banach spaces. Some further applications of this extensibility to the theory of linear operators between Banach spaces are also explored.     

Compact and weakly compact composition operators from the Bloch space into Möbius invariant spaces

We obtain exhaustive results and treat in a unified way the question of boundedness, compactness, and weak compactness of composition operators from the Bloch space into any space from a large family of conformally invariant spaces that includes the classical spaces like BMOA  , _Qα$Q_{\alpha }$, and analytic Besov spaces B^p$B^p$. In particular, by combining techniques from both complex and functional analysis, we prove that in this setting weak compactness is equivalent to compactness. For the operators into the corresponding “small” spaces we also characterize the boundedness and show that it is equivalent to compactness.
