On multivariate projection operators

This paper deals with multivariate Fourier series considering triangular type partial sums. Among others we give the exact order of the corresponding operator norm. Moreover, a generalization of the so-called Faber–Marcinkiewicz–Berman theorem has been proved.     

Discrete subspaces of countably tight compacta

Our main result is that the following cardinal arithmetic assumption, which is a slight weakening of GCH, “2^κ is a finite successor of κ for every cardinal κ”, implies that in any countably tight compactum X there is a discrete subspace D with . This yields a (consistent) confirmation of Alan Dow’s Conjecture 2 from [A. Dow, Closures of discrete sets in compact spaces, Studia Math. Sci. Hung. 42 (2005) 227–234].     

Estimates of the discrete spectrum of a linear operator pencil

Based on the direct methods of the perturbation theory, sufficient conditions for the finiteness of the discrete spectrum of linear pencils of the form L(λ)=B−λA, where A and B are bounded self-adjoint operators, are established. An estimate formula for the discrete spectrum is also presented. As applications, we study the spectrum of the characteristic equation of radiation energy transfer.

Positive definite Minkowski Lie algebras and bi-invariant Finsler metrics on Lie groups

In this paper, we introduce the notion of a Minkowski Lie algebra, which is the natural generalization of the notion of a real quadratic Lie algebra (metric Lie algebra). We then study the positive definite Minkowski Lie algebras and obtain a complete classification of the simple ones. Finally, we present some applications of our results to Finsler geometry and give a classification of bi-invariant Finsler metrics on Lie groups. Jordan zero-product preserving additive maps on operator algebras

Let Φ:A→B be an additive surjective map between some operator algebras such that AB+BA=0 implies Φ(A)Φ(B)+Φ(B)Φ(A)=0. We show that, under some mild conditions, Φ is a Jordan homomorphism multiplied by a central element. Such operator algebras include von Neumann algebras, C^∗-algebras and standard operator algebras, etc. Particularly, if H and K are infinite-dimensional (real or complex) Hilbert spaces and A=B(H) and B=B(K), then there exists a nonzero scalar c and an invertible linear or conjugate-linear operator U:H→K such that either Φ(A)=cUAU⁻¹ for all A∈B(H), or Φ(A)=cUA^∗U⁻¹ for all A∈B(H).
