Energy Spectrum Width and Nonequilibrium Energy of Rayleigh Waves Scattered on a Two-Dimensional Near-Surface Electron Layer

We obtain expressions for the energy spectrum widths of Rayleigh waves corresponding to their deformational coupling to Fermi and Boltzmann electrons in a two-dimensional layer near the surface of a semibounded solid. We evaluate the nonequilibrium energy of Rayleigh waves that depends on these widths and is caused by the same coupling to the corresponding hot electrons. We show that this energy is independent of the degeneracy degree of the electrons and is given by the mean energy of free Rayleigh waves heated up to temperature of the electrons. We find conditions under which the thermodynamics is determined by this nonequilibrium energy of Rayleigh waves in films of a certain thickness with Fermi electrons near the surface and by the equilibrium energy of bulk phonons in thicker samples. All the results are obtained using the Keldysh diagram technique applied to the case of semibounded media.     

Asymptotic stability of solitary wave solutions to the regularized long-wave equation

We study the asymptotic stability of solitary wave solutions to the regularized long-wave equation (RLW) in . RLW is an equation which describes the long waves in water. To prove the result, we make use of the monotonicity of the local H¹-norm and apply the Liouville property of (RLW) as in Merle and Martel (J. Math. Pures Appl. 79 (2000) 339; Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 157 (2001) 219).     

Delta and singular delta locus for one‐dimensional systems of conservation laws

This work gives a condition for existence of singular and delta shock wave solutions to Riemann problem for 2×2 systems of conservation laws. For a fixed left‐hand side value of Riemann data, the condition obtained in the paper describes a set of possible right‐hand side values. The procedure is similar to the standard one of finding the Hugoniot locus. Fluxes of the considered systems are globally Lipschitz with respect to one of the dependent variables. The association in a Colombeau‐type algebra is used as a solution concept. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley &Sons, Ltd.     

General expressions of peaked traveling wave solutions of CH-γ and CH equations

We use qualitative analysis and numerical simulation to study peaked traveling wave solutions of CH-γ and CH equations. General expressions of peakon and periodic cusp wave solutions are obtained. Some previous results become our special cases.

Bayesian estimation of incompletely observed diffusions

We present a general framework for Bayesian estimation of incompletely observed multivariate diffusion processes. Observations are assumed to be discrete in time, noisy and incomplete. We assume the drift and diffusion coefficient depend on an unknown parameter. A data-augmentation algorithm for drawing from the posterior distribution is presented which is based on simulating diffusion bridges conditional on a noisy incomplete observation at an intermediate time. The dynamics of such filtered bridges are derived and it is shown how these can be simulated using a generalised version of the guided proposals introduced in Schauer, Van der Meulen and Van Zanten (2017, Bernoulli 23(4A)).     

Mass distribution and skewness for passive scalar transport in pipes with polygonal and smooth cross sections

We extend our previous results characterizing the loading properties of a diffusing passive scalar advected by a laminar shear flow in ducts and channels to more general cross‐sectional shapes, including regular polygons and smoothed corner ducts originating from deformations of ellipses. For the case of the triangle and localized, cross‐wise uniform initial distributions, short‐time skewness is calculated exactly to be positive, while long‐time asymptotics shows it to be negative. Monte Carlo simulations confirm these predictions, and document the timescale for sign change. The equilateral triangle appears to be the only regular polygon with this property—all others possess positive skewness at all times. Alternatively, closed‐form flow solutions can be constructed for smooth deformations of ellipses, and illustrate how both nonzero short‐time skewness and the possibility of multiple sign switching in time is unrelated to domain corners. Exact conditions relating the median and the skewness to the mean are developed which guarantee when the sign for the skewness implies front (more mass to the right of the mean) or back (more mass to the left of the mean) “loading” properties of the evolving tracer distribution along the pipe. Short‐ and long‐time asymptotics confirm this condition, and Monte Carlo simulations verify this at all times. The simulations are also used to examine the role of corners and boundaries on the distribution for short‐time evolution of point source , as opposed to cross‐wise uniform, initial data.     

Propagation of waves in a micropolar elastic layer with stretch immersed in an infinite liquid

The effect of liquid on the propagation of waves in a micropolar elastic layer with stretch has been investigated. The frequency and wave velocity equations for symmetric and antisymmetric vibrations are derived. Propagation of monochromatic waves in a micropolar elastic layer with stretch is discussed. Results of this analysis reduce to those without stretch.

We compute the asymptotic wave profiles for the exterior problemin elasticity with homogeneous Neumann condition. We give preciseresults on the asymptotic distribution of the elastic energyin various subsets of space. These results are obtained viathe use of a recently developed extension of the scatteringtheory of C. Wilcox (Mabrouk & Helali, 2002).
