Density Correlations in the Two-Dimensional Coulomb Gas

We consider a two-dimensional Coulomb gas of positive and negative pointlike unit charges interacting via a logarithmic potential. The density (rather than the charge) correlation functions are studied. In the bulk, the form-factor theory of an equivalent sine-Gordon model is used to determine the density correlation length. At the surface of a rectilinear plain wall, the universality of the asymptotic behavior of the density correlations is suggested. A scaling analysis implies a local form of the compressibility sum rule near a hard wall. A symmetry of the Coulomb system with respect to the Möbius conformal transformation, which induces a gravitational source acting on the particle density, is established. Among the consequences, a universal term of the finite-size expansion of the grand potential is derived exactly for a disk geometry of the confining domain.     

Production of carbon soot with a high content of C60 and C70 fullerenes by electric arc

The effect of the parameters of the electric arc (helium pressure, current and voltage, clearance between electrodes) and of the peculiarities of the setup design (arrangement of electrodes, distance between the arc and the cooling surface, temperature of the soot condensation surface) on the yield of fullerenes has been studied. Conditions for producing soot with a C₆₀ and C₇₀ content up to 43% (toluene extract) have been found.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Surface tension of talc and talc-chlorite mixtures

It is possible to estimate surface tension of high-energy solids combining the immersion microcalorimetry thermodynamics and Van Oss' model. In this study we have applied this method on talc and talc-chlorite samples in order to obtain thermodynamic values which permit to understand surface properties useful in the industrial applications of these solids. Some talcite samples are preferentially used in specific industrial applications because they are less hydrophobic or more lamellar. This method seems to be reliable to classify the solids and predict some properties.     

脉冲激光LGA法钛表面氮化及其XRD和SEM微观分析

用调Ｑ－ＹＡＧ和ＸｅＣｌ脉冲激光在钛表面以激光气体合金化方法生成氮化钛层，用Ｘ射线衍射仪分析了不同激光能量、不同Ｎ２气压不同作用脉冲数等条件下ＴｉＮ的结晶取向、结晶形态、氮化程度，用扫描电镜观察了它们的微观结构，对脉冲激光的ＬＧＡ法机理进行了探讨，也发现了用ＬＧＡ法对Ｍｏ的氮化生成Ｍｏ２Ｎ．     

High temperature superconducting thin films for microwave filters

YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ and Tl₂Ba₂CaCu₂O₈ thin films for microwave filters were synthesized by pulsed laser deposition and the two-step thalliation process. Substrate quality requirements and the relation of thin film morphology, microstructure with microwave surface resistance were discussed.     

Weierstrass Points and Regular Maps

It was shown by G. A. Jones and the first author in [8] that underlying any map on a compact orientable surface S there is a natural complex structure making S into a Riemann surface. In this paper we consider regular maps and enquire about the Weierstrass points on the underlying Riemann surface. We are particularly interested to know when these are geometric, i.e. whether they lie at vertices, face-centres or edge-centres of the map.     

Band bending at the Si(1 1 1)–SiO2 interface induced by low-energy ion bombardment

Experiments employing photoreflectance spectroscopy have uncovered band bending due to electrically active defects at the Si(1 1 1)–SiO₂ interface after sub-keV Ar⁺ ion bombardment. The band bending of about 0.5 eV resembles that for Si(1 0 0)–SiO₂, and both interfaces exhibit two kinetic regimes for the evolution of band bending upon annealing due to defects healing. The healing takes place about an order of magnitude more quickly at the (1 1 1) interface, however, probably because of less fully saturated bonding and higher compressive stress.

A comparative study of the silent discharge treatment of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon polymers

Dielectric barrier air discharge treatment of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyisobutylene, polystyrene, and polyisoprene substrates has been characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The relative reactivities of these polymers towards silent discharge oxidation are rationalized in terms of ozone molecules interacting with an excited surface. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering study of polymer on metals. III. Chemisorbed polybenzimidazole and its corrosion-inhibiting properties at high temperature

Chemisorption of polybenzimidazole on silver and copper etched with nitric acid has been observed by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The polymer is found to react chemically with silver, forming a complexed film on the surface. The SERS spectra show that polybenzimidazole film inhibits oxidation of the metal at high temperature, unlike chemisorbed benzimidazole, benzotriazole, and poly(4-vinyl pyridine). © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
