Using the gradients of temperature and internal parameters in Continuum ThermodynamicsIntroduction des gradients de température et de paramètres internes en Thermodynamique des Milieux Continus

In this paper, the possibility of using the gradients of the temperature and of the internal parameters as additional state variables in Continuum Thermodynamics is considered. The expressions of the two principles are discussed and Clausius–Duhem inequality is derived under an appropriate statement of the internal entropy production. Shape sensitivity of a plane crack front

The 3D‐elasticity model of a solid with a plane crack under the stress‐free boundary conditions at the crack is considered. We investigate variations of a solution and of energy functionals with respect to perturbations of the crack front in the plane. The corresponding expansions at least up to the second‐order terms are obtained. The strong derivatives of the solution are constructed as an iterative solution of the same elasticity problem with specified right‐hand sides. Using the expansion of the potential and surface energy, we consider an approximate quadratic form for local shape optimization of the crack front defined by the Griffith criterion. To specify its properties, a procedure of discrete optimization is proposed, which reduces to a matrix variational inequality. At least for a small load we prove its solvability and find a quasi‐static model of the crack growth depending on the loading parameter. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Shape Optimization and Fictitious Domain Approach for Solving Free Boundary Problems of Bernoulli Type

This contribution deals with an efficient method for the numerical realization of the exterior and interior Bernoulli free boundary problems. It is based on a shape optimization approach. The state problems are solved by a fictitious domain solver using boundary Lagrange multipliers.     

Does the beam width affect the generalized M factor of hard-edged diffracted beams?

A detailed study of the generalized M² factor of hard-edged diffracted beams based on the truncated second-order moments method, asymptotic analysis and self-convergent beam width approach is performed. The dependence of the generalized M² factor on the parameters characterizing the spatial profile, and beam truncation, etc. is analyzed.     

Solubility parameter determination of cationic surfactants by inverse GC

Summary The solubility parameters of cationic surfactants were obtained using the inverse gas chromatographic technique. The surfactants didodecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide, dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide and dodecyl pyridinium chloride were used as stationary phase and retention data of different probe solutes were measured at different temperatures. The results were analysed by the combination of Flory-Huggins and Hildebrand theories, and the solubility parameters of the surfactants were obtained in a range of temperatures between 80–120°C.     

Predictive control of periodic-review production inventory systems with deteriorating items

In this paper a predictive control strategy is applied to a periodic-review dynamic inventory system with deteriorating items. Given the current inventory level, we determine the optimal production rates to be implemented at the beginning of each of the following periods over the control horizon. The effectiveness of this approach is the use of future information of the inventory target level and the desired production rate, which are available, along the fixed horizon. The deterioration coefficient may be known or unknown and both cases are considered. In the case where it is unknown, the self-tuning predictive control is applied. The proposed control algorithms are illustrated by simulations.     

Embedding of Dynamical Symmetry Groups U(1, 1) and U(2) of a Free Particle on AdS 2 and S 2 into Parasupersymmetry Algebra

Using two different types of the laddering equations realized simultaneously by the associated Gegenbauer functions, we show that all quantum states corresponding to the motion of a free particle on AdS ₂ and S ² are splitted into infinite direct sums of infinite-and finite-dimensional Hilbert subspaces which represent Lie algebras u(1, 1) and u(2) with infinite- and finite-fold degeneracies, respectively. In addition, it is shown that the representation bases of Lie algebras with rank 1, i.e., gl(2, C), realize the representation of nonunitary parasupersymmetry algebra of arbitrary order. The realization of the representation of parasupersymmetry algebra by the Hilbert subspaces which describe the motion of a free particle on AdS ₂ and S ² with the dynamical symmetry groups U(1, 1) and U(2) are concluded as well.     

Phase and Amplitude Characteristics of Injection Lasers with Allowance for the Effects of Nonlinear Amplification in Current Modulation

The influence of the parameter of amplitude-phase coupling for nonlinear amplification on the phase-frequency characteristics of an injection laser in the regime of pumping current modulation has been investigated theoretically. The parameter is defined as the coefficient of proportionality between changes in the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index during variation of the density of photons in the cavity. The substantial dependence of the coefficient of phase modulation on the parameter of the amplitude-phase coupling for nonlinear amplification at small modulation frequencies is shown. A technique to determine the indicated parameter based on the frequency dependence of the ratio between the coefficients of phase and amplitude modulation is suggested.
