An improved strongly sub-feasible SSLE method for optimization problems and numerical experiments

In this paper, the super-linearly and quadratically convergent strong sub-feasible method [J.L. Li, J.B. Jian, A superlinearly and quadratically convergent strongly subfeasible method for nonlinear inequality constrained optimization, OR Transactions, 7 (2) (2003) 21-34] for nonlinear inequality constrained optimization is improved, such that the iterative points can get into the feasible region after a finite number of iterations. As a result, a strict restricted condition can be overcome. Another two contributions of this paper are that a new bidirectional Armijo line search is presented and a lot of numerical comparison results are reported.     

Formulation and computation of general financial equilibrium

In this paper a model of competitive financial equilibrium is introduced, which yields the optimal composition of assets and liabilities in each sector's portfolio, as well as the market clearing prices for each instrument. The variational inequality formulation of the equilibrium conditions is then utilized to establish existence and uniqueness properties of the solution pattern. Finally, an algorithm is proposed for the computation of the equilibrium pattern; the algorithm resolves the problem into simple network subproblems which can then be solved in closed form. The algorithm is then applied to an example.     

Comparative analysis of multiobjective evolutionary algorithms for random and correlated instances of multiobjective d-dimensional knapsack problems

This study analyzes multiobjective d-dimensional knapsack problems (MOd-KP) within a comparative analysis of three multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs): the ε-nondominated sorted genetic algorithm II (ε-NSGAII), the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm 2 (SPEA2) and the ε-nondominated hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm (ε-hBOA). This study contributes new insights into the challenges posed by correlated instances of the MOd-KP that better capture the decision interdependencies often present in real world applications. A statistical performance analysis of the algorithms uses the unary ε-indicator, the hypervolume indicator and success rate plots to demonstrate their relative effectiveness, efficiency, and reliability for the MOd-KP instances analyzed. Our results indicate that the ε-hBOA achieves superior performance relative to ε-NSGAII and SPEA2 with increasing number of objectives, number of decisions, and correlative linkages between the two. Performance of the ε-hBOA suggests that probabilistic model building evolutionary algorithms have significant promise for expanding the size and scope of challenging multiobjective problems that can be explored.     

Effect of low-temperature processing on dry film photoresist properties for flexible electronics

This study presents the mechanical characterization of the dry film photoresist PerMX and its adhesion properties when laminated onto Kapton® E (PI) and Melinex® ST506 (PET). Additionally, the processing temperature, the adhesion strength, and the neutral plane position are investigated and optimized. A relatively low-temperature (85 °C) process is developed to protect the integrity of the polymers with low glass transition temperature and reduce the thermal mismatch stress. Reduction in processing temperature led to a decrement in the adhesion strength. To counteract this unwanted effect, surface treatments (oxygen plasma) are performed on the polymer surface before lamination. Using the latter techniques, adhesion of PerMX to PET (hard bake: 1 h at 85 °C) is increased from 0.07 to 0.26 N mm⁻¹ (variation of 270%). Finally, the mechanical robustness is investigated and increased by tuning the position of the neutral plane, after 50,000 bending cycles and a radius of curvature of 2.5 mm. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Vibrational Analysis and Geometry Optimization of a Local Anesthetic by Means of the Am1 Semiempirical Method

The semiempirical method AM1 was used to optimize the geometric parameters: bond lengths, bond angles and torsional angles in the local anesthetic benzocaine hydrochloride. The frequencies and intensities of the normal modes were computed. These results were compared with the infrared and Raman spectroscopic data. A theoretical spectrum using several scale coefficients was plotted. Electron density maps in two and three dimensions were drawn. Several calculated thermodynamic parameters are discussed.

An active set limited memory BFGS algorithm for bound constrained optimization

In this paper, an active set limited BFGS algorithm is proposed for bound constrained optimization. The global convergence will be established under some suitable conditions. Numerical results show that the given method is effective.
