Monotone Mappings and Flows of Viscous Media

We establish solvability of the boundary-value problems describing stationary and periodic flows of viscoplastic media. In the case of stationary flows we study the question of convergence of the Galerkin method. For the problem of periodic flows we prove a version of the second Bogolyubov theorem.     

Entropy production per site in (nonreversible) spin-flip processes

Entropy production per site in a (nonreversible) spin-flip process is studied. We give it a useful expression, from which a property stronger than affinity of the entropy production per site follows. Furthermore, quasi-invariance of nonequilibrium measures in the spin-flip processes is discussed via entropy production.     

Logarithmic corrections for dilute uniaxial ferromagnets at the critical dimension

The leading logarithmic corrections to the critical behavior of a dilute uniaxial (Ising) ferromagnet in the disordered phase are derived using renormalization group methods. The values of the exponents in the logarithmic terms differ from those given by previous authors.     

Logarithmic asymptotics of solutions of the large deviation problem for the boltzmann equation with small transfer of momentum

Stability and convergence of modified Ishikawa iterative sequences with errors in Banach spaces

Summary Some stability and convergence theorems of the modified Ishikawa iterative sequences with errors for asymptotically nonexpansive mapping in the intermediate sense and asymptotically pseudo contractive and uniformly Lipschitzian mappings in Banach spaces are obtained.     

Existence and Nonlinear Stability of Stationary States of the Schrödinger–Poisson System

We consider the Schrödinger–Poisson system in the repulsive (plasma physics) Coulomb case. Given a stationary state from a certain class we prove its nonlinear stability, using an appropriately defined energy-Casimir functional as Lyapunov function. To obtain such states we start with a given Casimir functional and construct a new functional which is in some sense dual to the corresponding energy-Casimir functional. This dual functional has a unique maximizer which is a stationary state of the Schrödinger–Poisson system and lies in the stability class. The stationary states are parameterized by the equation of state, giving the occupation probabilities of the quantum states as a strictly decreasing function of their energy levels.

The logarithmic norm. History and modern theory

In his 1958 thesis Stability and Error Bounds, Germund Dahlquist introduced the logarithmic norm in order to derive error bounds in initial value problems, using differential inequalities that distinguished between forward and reverse time integration. Originally defined for matrices, the logarithmic norm can be extended to bounded linear operators, but the extensions to nonlinear maps and unbounded operators have required a functional analytic redefinition of the concept.This compact survey is intended as an elementary, but broad and largely self-contained, introduction to the versatile and powerful modern theory. Its wealth of applications range from the stability theory of IVPs and BVPs, to the solvability of algebraic, nonlinear, operator, and functional equations. Lemniscates and inequalities for the logarithmic capacities of continua

It is shown that if P(z) = z ⁿ + ? is a polynomial with connected lemniscate E(P) = {z: ¦P(z)¦ ≤ 1} and m critical points, then, for any n? m+1 points on the lemniscate E(P), there exists a continuum γ ? E(P) of logarithmic capacity cap γ ≤ 2^?1/n which contains these points and all zeros and critical points of the polynomial. As corollaries, estimates for continua of minimum capacity containing given points are obtained.     

The Lagrangian Globalization Method for Nonsmooth Constrained Equations

The difficulty suffered in optimization-based algorithms for the solution of nonlinear equations lies in that the traditional methods for solving the optimization problem have been mainly concerned with finding a stationary point or a local minimizer of the underlying optimization problem, which is not necessarily a solution of the equations. One method to overcome this difficulty is the Lagrangian globalization (LG for simplicity) method. This paper extends the LG method to nonsmooth equations with bound constraints. The absolute system of equations is introduced. A so-called Projected Generalized-Gradient Direction (PGGD) is constructed and proved to be a descent direction of the reformulated nonsmooth optimization problem. This projected approach keeps the feasibility of the iterates. The convergence of the new algorithm is established by specializing the PGGD. Numerical tests are given.
