The radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) is moderated by iron(II) acetylacetonate (Fe(acac)2) by the organometallic route (OMRP), as well as by degenerative transfer polymerization (DTP) when in the presence of excess radicals, through the formation of thermally labile organometallic FeIII dormant species. The poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)‐FeIII(acac)2 dormant species has been isolated in the form of an oligomer and characterized by 1H NMR, EPR, and IR methods, and then used as a single‐component initiator for the OMRP of VAc. The degree of polymerization of this isolated oligomeric species demonstrates the limited ability of Fe(acac)2, relative to the Co(acac)2 congener, to rapidly trap the growing PVAc radical chain. Control under OMRP conditions is improved by the presence of Lewis bases, especially PMe2Ph. Graft copolymerization of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) with a maleic anhydride (MAH) was performed using intermeshing corotating twin‐screw extruder in the presence of benzoyl peroxide (BPO). The LDPE/polyamide 6 (PA6) and LDPE‐g‐MAH/PA6 blends were prepared in a corotating twin‐screw extruder. The melt viscosity of the grafted LDPE was measured by a capillary rheometer. The grafted copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microcopy (SEM). The influence of the variation in temperature, BPO and MAH concentration, and temperature on the grafting degree and on the melt viscosity was studied. The grafting degree increased appreciably up to about 0.45 phr and then decreased continuously with an increasing BPO concentration. According to the FTIR analysis, it was found that the amount of grafted MAH on the LDPE chains was ~5.1%. Thermal analysis showed that melting temperature of the graft copolymers decreases with increasing grafting degree. In addition to this, loss modulus (E″) of the copolymers first increased little with increasing grafting and then obviously decreased with increasing grafting degree. Furthermore, the results revealed that the tensile strength of the blends increased linearly with increasing PA6 content. The results of SEM and mechanical test showed that the blends have good interfacial adhesion and good stability of the phase structure, which is reflected in the mechanical properties. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nitrogen‐rich energetic polymers were synthesized by the polyaddition reaction of 1,2‐bis(5‐monomethylhydrazinyl‐1H‐tetrazolyl)ethane ( 1a ), 1‐methyl‐1,2‐bis(5‐monomethylhydrazinyl‐1H‐tetrazolyl)ethane ( 1b ), and 1,4‐bis(5‐mono‐methylhydrazinyl‐1H‐tetrazolyl)butane ( 1c ) with hexamethylene diisocyanate. The experiments showed that neither a polymerization from solution or bulk was possible. Therefore, a new method for the polymerization of tetrazolyl hydrazines had to be developed. The formed polymers were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy (IR) and elemental analysis. The energetic properties were investigated by bomb calorimetric measurements along with calculations using the EXPLO5 software. The thermal stability was investigated by DSC measurements. We demonstrate that the electrical quality of junctions fabricated in lattice-mismatched In0.75Ga0.25As on InP grown by molecular beam epitaxy can be improved with the addition of in situ anneals in the buffer layer that separates the substrate from the In0.75Ga0.25As device layers. Near infrared photodetectors fabricated using this material had dark current densities of approximately 2.5 mA/cm2 at a reverse bias of 1 V, which is more than one order of magnitude smaller than commercially available photodetectors grown using vapor phase epitaxy. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that dislocations due to the lattice mismatch between the substrate and the epitaxial layer are confined primarily to the buffer layer for all samples studied. No significant differences in x-ray diffraction spectra or dislocation distribution were observed on samples with and without in situ annealing. Atomic force microscopy indicated that all samples had a crosshatch pattern, and that the average surface roughness of the sample that contained in situ anneals is a factor of three greater than the sample without in situ anneals.  相似文献
