Let X and Y be two independent and nondegenerate random variables such that X is symmetric about a and Y is symmetric about b. It is shown that XY is symmetric about ab if and only if ab= 0.     

Construction of multivariate distributions with given marginals

Summary We make some remarks on the problem how to construct probability measures with given marginals. Questions of this kind arise if one wants to build a stochastic model in a situation where one has some idea of the kind of dependence and knows exactly certain marginal distributions.     

Testing independence of variates in an infinitely divisible random vector

A method is given for testing the independence of variates in an infinitely divisible random vector and for testing the independence of several subsets of the variates. Applications to stochastic processes are indicated.     

Strong approximations of the Hoeffding,Blum, Kiefer,Rosenblatt multivariate empirical process

Hoeffding (Ann. Math. Statist. 1948) and Blum, Kiefer and Rosenblatt (Ann. Math. Statist. 1961) constructed distribution free tests of independence based on a multivariate empirical process. We establish strong invariance principles for the latter and also for appropriate functionals of it.     

Factorization in retrocausality: a response to O. Costa de Beauregard

Costa de Beauregard's reformulation of joint probability, in connection with retrocausality, reveals a mathematical paradox independent of time-reversal. That paradox is intrinsic to Bell's theorem and has a physical manifestation in the Orsay experiments.

Limit laws for upper and lower extremes from stationary mixing sequences

The aim of this paper is to examine the weak limiting behavior of upper and lower extremes from stationary sequences satisfying dependence conditions similar to D and D′ introduced by Leadbetter (Z. Wahrsch. Verw. Gebiete28 (1974), 289–303). By establishing the convergence in distribution of an associated sequence of point processes, the joint limiting distribution of any collection of upper and lower extremes can be determined. Sufficient and, in some cases, necessary conditions for the asymptotic independence of the upper and lower extremes are also given.
