Phthalocyanines have been used as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents because of their uniquely favorable optical properties and high photostability. They have been shown to be highly successful for the treatment of cancer through efficient singlet‐oxygen (1O2) production. However, due to their hydrophobic properties, the considerations of solubility and cellular location have made understanding their photophysics in vitro and in vivo difficult. Indeed, many quantitative assessments of PDT reagents are undertaken in purely organic solvents, presenting challenges for interpreting observations during practical application in vivo. With steady‐state and time‐resolved laser spectroscopy, we show that for axial ligated silicon phthalocyanines in aqueous media, both the water:lipophile ratio and the pH have drastic effects on their photophysics, and ultimately dictate their functionality as PDT drugs. We suggest that considering the presented photophysics for PDT drugs in aqueous solutions leads to guidelines for a next generation of even more potent PDT agents.  相似文献

The molecule of the title compound, C18H18O2, is a substituted cyclopropane ring. The electron density in this molecule has been determined by refining single‐crystal X‐ray data using scattering factors derived from quantum mechanical calculations. Topological analysis of the electron densities in the three cyclopropane C—C bonds was carried out. The results show the effects of this substitution on these C—C bonds.  相似文献

This work presents an experimental and theoretical study to address the chemical reactivity of series of nitroxide radicals. For that purpose two physicochemical properties: the half-wave potential and the hyperfine coupling constants of the nitrogen nuclei, were analyzed. Experimental values are compared with electronic structure calculations at the BHandHLYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level. E1/2 values were in good agreement with the adiabatic ionization potential when including the solvent effects by the Cramer and Truhlar Solvation Model. Preeliminar experimental electron spin deslocalization studies suggest that structural hindrance plays an important role in their deslocatization mechanism.  相似文献

Recent developments regarding charged multiblock copolymers that can form physical networks and exhibit robust mechanical properties herald new and exciting opportunities for contemporary technologies requiring amphiphilic attributes. Due to the presence of strong interactions, however, control over the phase behavior of such materials remains challenging, especially since their morphologies can be solvent‐templated. In this study, transmission electron microscopy and microtomography are employed to examine the morphological characteristics of midblock‐sulfonated pentablock ionomers prepared from solvents differing in polarity. Resultant images confirm that discrete, spherical ion‐rich microdomains form in films cast from a relatively nonpolar solvent, whereas an apparently mixed morphology with a continuous ion‐rich pathway is generated when the casting solvent is more highly polar. Detailed 3D analysis of the morphological characteristics confirms the coexistence of hexagonally‐packed nonpolar cylinders and lamellae, which facilitates the diffusion of ions and/or other polar species through the nanostructured medium.

Recently, the visible-light photoredox decarboxylative couplings of N-(acyloxy)phthalimides (NHPI esters) and its derivatives have become an efficient chemical transformation. Under visible light, the NHPI esters undergo a single-electron transfer (SET) process to afford the corresponding carbon or nitrogen radicals that participate in many chemical transformations. The photoredox decarboxylative couplings have been applied to achieve construction of an array of carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bonds as well as the synthesis of carbocycles and heterocycles. This review categorises photocatalysts, discusses the application and catalysis mechanisms of NHPI esters, and details recent progress in this field.  相似文献

Plastoquinone and ubiquinone play essential roles in the electron transport chains of chloroplasts and mitochondria by coupling electron transport to the transfer of protons across membranes. The energy of the resulting proton gradient is used to synthesize adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all life. How did quinones first become involved in this process? We have detected several quinone compounds in carbonaceous meteorites that can transport protons in a liposome model system. It is possible that such compounds were available to transport protons in primitive versions of electron transport in early life.  相似文献

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is primarily used in the treatment of mild to moderate acne. However, its application is associated with skin irritation. It has been shown that encapsulation and controlled release of BPO could reduce the side effect while also reducing percutaneous absorption when administered to the skin. The aim of the present investigation was to design and formulate an appropriate encapsulated form of BPO, using microsponge technology, and explore the parameters affecting the morphology and other characteristics of the resultant products employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Benzoyl peroxide particles were prepared using an emulsion solvent diffusion method by adding an organic internal phase containing benzoyl peroxide, ethyl cellulose and dichloromethane into a stirred aqueous phase containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Different concentrations of BPO microsponges were incorporated in lotion formulations and the drug release from these formulations were studied. The SEM micrographs of the BPO microsponges enabled measurement of their size and showed that they were spherical and porous. Results showed that the morphology and particle size of microsponges were affected by drug:polymer ratio, stirring rate and the amount of emulsifier used. The results obtained also showed that an increase in the ratio of drug:polymer resulted in a reduction in the release rate of BPO from the microsponges. The release data showed that the highest and the lowest release rates were obtained from lotions containing plain BPO particles and BPO microsponges with the drug:polymer ratio of 13:1, respectively. The kinetics of release study showed that the release data followed Peppas model and the main mechanism of drug release from BPO microsponges was diffusion.  相似文献

Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) permits to analyze samples in their native-hydrated state, allowing a broad spectrum of biological applications. In this study, ESEM equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) was used as a fast method to analyze tissue morphology and to investigate metal distribution in the Ni hyperaccumulator Noccaea caerulescens, an established model to study the adaptation of plants to metalliferous soils. The low vacuum and wet mode operative conditions required the proper choice of experimental parameters both for morphological and compositional characterization of plant tissues. The calibration strategy for semi-quantitative analysis involved the use of Ni fortified agar as standard and signal normalization respect to endogenous carbon, chosen as internal standard. The obtained results are in accordance with present literature, showing a preferential Ni distribution in the epidermal cells respect to near the stomata for leaves and in the cotyledon epidermidis respect to cotyledon parenchyma area for seeds. Thanks to the absence of any time consuming sample treatment steps, ESEM-EDS technique can be proposed as valid strategy for in vivo high-throughput analysis of plant tissues and for a rapid screening and identification of other hyperaccumulator plants in a selected contaminated area.  相似文献

The morphological and ultrastructural features of the spermatozoon in Brachionus calyciflorus are described using light, fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mature spermatozoon, which appears to be thread-like, is composed of a slightly expanded anterior of cell body region and a flagellum region without acrosome. The cell body region and flagellum region are respectively 16–27 μm and 20–33 μm in length (n = 60). The spermatozoon is characterized by a mass of dense tubular materials, which occupy most of the cell. Some mitochondria are distributed around the nuclear region in the anterior of the cell body region, while in the posterior portion of cell body, the chromatin often contains a single lobated nucleus arranged at the center of cell. The flagellum contains the classic axoneme (9 × 2 + 2) and possesses lateral undulating membrane. Mature B. calyciflorus males have no germ cell stages earlier than the spermatids in the testis. TEM examination reveals rigid rods as well as predominant typical spermatozoon in the testis. Observations, based on successive photographs and videos, enabled a first-time recording of the unique inverted movement of the spermatozoon, which indicated that the movement of the spermatozoon is driven by the flagellum. Our study also provides further supplementary insights into the phylogenetic systematics of the Rotifera.  相似文献

Experimental confirmation for the stronger interaction of Ni with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) compared to Cu with MWCNTs is presented. The interfaces between Cu (Ni) nanoparticles side-on oriented onto MWCNTs are analyzed with high spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) of the carbon K-edge. The EEL spectra reveal a rehybridization from sp2 to sp3 hybridized carbon of the outermost MWCNT layer at the Ni interface, but no such rehybridization can be observed at the Cu interface. The EELS results are supported by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, which show a better wetting behavior of Ni and a smaller gap at the Ni–MWCNT interface, as compared to the corresponding Cu interfaces. The different behavior of Cu and Ni can be explained in terms of differing valence d-orbital occupancy. For the successful experimental demonstration of this effect the use of a soft chemical metal deposition technique is crucial.  相似文献
