Normal Bundles to Laufer Rational Curves in Local Calabi–Yau Threefolds

We prove a conjecture by F. Ferrari. Let X be the total space of a nonlinear deformation of a rank two holomorphic vector bundle on a smooth rational curve, such that X has trivial canonical bundle and has sections. Then the normal bundle to such sections is computed in terms of the rank of the Hessian of a suitably defined superpotential at its critical points.     

Algorithms for finding connected separators between antipodal points

A set (or a collection of sets) contained in the Euclidean space Rm is symmetric if it is invariant under the antipodal map. Given a symmetric unicoherent polyhedron X (like an n-dimensional cube or a sphere) and an odd real function f defined on vertices of a certain symmetric triangulation of X, we algorithmically construct a connected symmetric separator of X by choosing a subcollection of the triangulation. Each element of the subcollection contains the vertices v and u such that f(v)f(u)?0.     

Separable subgroups of mapping class groups

We investigate separability questions for the mapping class group of a surface. While this group is not subgroup separable in general, we prove a large family of interesting subgroups are separable. This includes many classically studied subgroups such as solvable subgroups, Heegaard and Handlebody groups, geometric subgroups, and all the terms in the Johnson filtration.     

The inverse scattering problem for Schrödinger and Klein–Gordon equations with a nonlocal nonlinearity

We study the inverse scattering problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and for the nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation with the generalized Hartree type nonlinearity. We reconstruct the nonlinearity from knowledge of the scattering operator, which improves the known results.     

Multiple harmonic series related to multiple Euler numbers

In this paper, we define the multiple Euler numbers and consider some multiple harmonic series of Mordell-Tornheim's type, which is a partial sum of the Mordell-Tornheim zeta series defined by Matsumoto. Indeed, we prove a certain reducibility of these series as well as the multiple zeta values.

The Hopf Property for Subgroups of Hyperbolic Groups

A group is said to be Hopfian if every surjective endomorphism of the group is injective. We show that finitely generated subgroups of torsion-free hyperbolic groups are Hopfian. Our proof generalizes a theorem of Sela (Topology 35 (2) 1999, 301–321).     

N identical particles under quantum confinement: a many-body dimensional perturbation theory approach

Systems that involve N identical interacting particles under quantum confinement appear throughout many areas of physics, including chemical, condensed matter, and atomic physics. In this paper, we present the methods of dimensional perturbation theory, a powerful set of tools that uses symmetry to yield simple results for studying such many-body systems. We present a detailed discussion of the dimensional continuation of the N-particle Schrödinger equation, the spatial dimension D→∞ equilibrium (D⁰) structure, and the normal-mode (D⁻¹) structure. We use the FG matrix method to derive general, analytical expressions for the many-body normal-mode vibrational frequencies, and we give specific analytical results for three confined N-body quantum systems: the N-electron atom, N-electron quantum dot, and N-atom inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate with a repulsive hard-core potential.
