This article suggests a framework to organise a cluster of variables that are associated with students' effective use of computer algebra systems (CAS) in mathematics learning. Based on a review of the literature and from the authors' own teaching experience, the framework identifies the main characteristics of students' interactions with CAS technology and how these may be used to monitor students' developing use of CAS; from this, the framework may be used to plan teaching in order to gain greater benefit from the availability of CAS. Four case studies describing students' development over a semester are reported. These demonstrate a variety of combinations of technical competencies and personal attributes. They indicate the importance of both the technical and personal aspects but suggest that negative attitudes rather than technical difficulties can limit the effective use of CAS. In this article we describe a mathematical microworld for investigating car motion on a racing course and its use with a group of grade 12 students. The microworld is concerned with the mathematical construction of courses and functions which describe car motion. It is implemented in the computer algebra system, Maple®, which provides the means to represent courses and functions symbolically and graphically. We describe the learning opportunities offered by the microworld in relation to the research literature on functions. In this work we studied the impact of using NuCalc, an interactive computer algebra software, on the development of a discourse community in a college level mathematics class. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected over the course of 3 weeks of instruction. We examined the influence of the software on: group interactions; the mathematical investigations of learners; and the teacher’s interactions with students. Data points to four distinct ways in which the presence of NuCalc positively impacted the learning community we studied: (1) it served as a tool for extending students’ mathematical thinking, (2) it motivated students’ engagement in group discourse, (3) it became a tool for mediating discourse, (4) it became a catalyst for refining the culture of classroom, shifting the patterns of interactions between the teacher and learners. 相似文献

We present a numerical implementation of the parallel gradient distribution (PGD) method for the solution of large-scale unconstrained optimization problems. The proposed parallel algorithm is characterized by a parallel phase which exploits the portions of the gradient of the objective function assigned to each processor; then, a coordination phase follows which, by a synchronous interaction scheme, optimizes over the partial results obtained by the parallel phase. The parallel and coordination phases are implemented using a quasi-Newton limited-memory BFGS approach. The computational experiments, carried out on a network of UNIX workstations by using the parallel software tool PVM, show that parallelization efficiency was problem dependent and ranged between 0.15 and 8.75. For the 150 problems solved by PGD on more than one processor, 85 cases had parallelization efficiency below 1, while 65 cases had a parallelization efficiency above 1. 相似文献

Graphics play a crucial role in statistical analysis and data mining. Being able to quantify structure in data that is visible in plots, and how people read the structure from plots is an ongoing challenge. The lineup protocol provides a formal framework for data plots, making inference possible. The data plot is treated like a test statistic, and lineup protocol acts like a comparison with the sampling distribution of the nulls. This article describes metrics for describing structure in data plots and evaluates them in relation to the choices that human readers made during several large Amazon Turk studies using lineups. The metrics that were more specific to the plot types tended to better match subject choices, than generic metrics. The process that we followed to evaluate metrics will be useful for general development of numerically measuring structure in plots, and also in future experiments on lineups for choosing blocks of pictures. A full-field speckle pattern image correlation method is presented that will determine directly the complete, two-dimensional
deformation field during the image correlation process on digital images obtained using computer vision systems. In this work,
a B-Spline function is used to represent the object deformation field throughout the entire image area. This is an improvement
over subset-based image correlation methods by implicitly maintaining position and derivative continuity constraints among
subsets up to a specified order. The control point variables within the B-Spline deformation function are optimized iteratively
with the Levenberg-Marquardt method to achieve minimum disparity between the predicted and actual deformed images. Results
have shown that the proposed method is computationally efficient, accurate and robust. The general framework of this method
can be applied ton-dimensional image correlation systems that solve for multi-dimension vector fields. 相似文献
