Isomeric transitions between shape coexisting states in iodine isotopes withA=115, 119 and 121

Applying delayed- r.f. coincidences and generalized centroid-shift analysis, nanosecond isomers in some odd-A iodine isotopes are studied in-beam. The reactions¹⁰⁶Cd(¹²C,p2n) and^116,118Sn(⁶Li,3n) have been used. The following half-lives were determined:T _1/2(565 keV)=0.50±0.10 ns andT _1/2(837 keV) =0.90±0.20 ns in¹¹⁵I,T _1/2(687 keV)=5.50±0.50 ns andT _1/2(2418 keV)=4.0±0.50 ns in¹¹⁹I as well asT _1/2(812 keV)=0.35±0.20 ns andT _1/2(445 keV)<0.10 ns=">¹²¹I. A systematics of the absolute probabilities for the transitions deexciting theg _9/2 9/2⁺ and _11/2 11/2 ₁ ^– band heads in^115–125I is presented and discussed.Partly supported by the Bulgarian National Research Foundation under contracts PH14, and PH31 and Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Stabsabteilung Internationale Beziehungen     

Simple formula for nuclear charge radius

A new formula for the nuclear charge radius is proposed, dependent on the mass numberA and neutron excessN-Z in the nucleus. It is simple and it reproduces all the experimentally available mean square radii and their isotopic shifts of even-even nuclei much better than other frequently used relations.This work is partly supported by the Polish Committee of Scientific Research under contract No. 203119101     

Spatial dependence of meson correlation functions at high temperature

The spatial dependence of meson correlation functions at high temperature is studied in perturbative QCD, keeping only the lowest order term. We obtain analytic results for the static correlation function in this approximation. Problems connected with the regularization of the divergent expressions are discussed in detail. The meson screening mass is determined from the form of the correlation function at large distances. We obtain , which agrees with the results of Eletskii and Ioffe, for massless quarks (M=0). Finally, the correlation function in the temporal direction is briefly discussed. For massless quarks, we find the corresponding screening massm _scr=2T.Research supported in part by the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research under Grant No. 2.0204.91.01     

High-spin 52 117 Te: Rotational bands? Noncollective oblate

¹¹⁷Te has been studied via⁸²Se(⁴⁰Ar,5n)¹¹⁷Te, and a new, substantially extended level scheme is proposed to I53/2. Our TRS calculations suggest rotational bands, but with an experimental sensitivity of 2%, we see none. Our results differ from those of Sharma, et al, who report two isolated E2 bands. We find them less band-like, being joined at the top and changed in content and order. We suggest a noncollective oblate shape for a new 39/2^– level.This work is supported in part by the Department of Energy under Contract No.DE-AC03-76SF0098(LBL).     

Photorefractive properties of ruthenium-doped potassium niobate

Photoconductivities and photovoltaic currents of ruthenium-doped KNbO₃ are orders of magnitude larger than that of undoped and ion-doped crystals. KNbO₃:Ru is very sensitive for holographic recording with red light and the photovoltaic current increases sublinearly with light intensity.     

Interdiffusion studies in Bi-based layered systems with nanosecond laser pulses

Interdiffusion processes are induced by nanosecond laser pulses from an excimer laser. The Bi-based systems studied are formed by a Bi layer and a Sb or Ge layer. Configurations with Bi at the surface layer or at the innermost layer are both studied. Real-time reflectivity measurements are performed during the irradiation to determine the process kinetics and times and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry is used to obtain the concentration depth profiles. It will be shown that there is an interfacially initiated diffusion process in the Bi-Sb system and that the diffusion coefficients of this system within the liquid phase are in the 10^–5–10^–6 cm²/s range. The Bi-Ge system shows instead little mixing, the diffusion coefficients of the system within the liquid phase being at least two orders of magnitude lower. The differences observed when Bi is the surface layer or the innermost one are related to the different thermal responses of the system.     

Dynamic spin-orbit interaction of heavy ions in semiclassical calculations of elastic scattering

Experimental results of the 1st rank analyzing power for elastic scattering of⁶Li and⁷Li could be only understood when including coupling to inelastic channels in the calculations. This finding — established for some time — yet presents some open questions regarding the energy dependence of the spin and polarization effects. Semiclassical calculations presented here might clarify the relevant physical background of the earlier quantummechanically exact results.     

Nuclearg-factors of the 1229 and 2911 keV isomers in143Nd

Nuclearg-factors of the 1229 keV 13⁺/2 and 2911 keV 21⁺/2 level and the half-life of the 1229 keV level have been measured to beg(1229)=0.058(5),g(2911)=0.69(12) andT _1/2 (1229)=6.79(2) ns. The experimental g-factors show that the 1229 keV level has a dominant configuration of (f _7/23^–), and the 2911 keV level has an almost pure (f _7/27^–), configuration.The authors would like to thank the crew of CYRIC for the operation of the cyclotron.

Possible candidates for discrete gamma rays linking superdeformed and yrast states in an odd nucleus:193Pb

The francium isotopes^200–202Fr were produced in the reaction³⁵Cl+¹⁷⁰Yb using bombarding energies of 4.9–5.3 MeV/nucleon. Fusion products were separated in-flight from the primary beam using a gas-filled recoil separator. An alpha line with the alpha particle energy and half-life of (7468±9) keV and (19 ₋₆ ⁺¹³ ) ms, respectively, was assigned to²⁰⁰Fr. Previously reported decay properties of^201,202Fr were confirmed.
