A new biomaterial,hen egg shell membrane,to eliminate heavy metal ion from their dilute waste solution

The egg shell membrane (ESM) is an intricate lattice network of stable and water-insoluble fibers with high surface area. ESM accumulates and eliminates various heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous solution with high affinity and in short contact time, depending on pH and characteristics of the individual ion. Under certain conditions, the level of precious ions, Au, Pt, and Pd accumulation approaches 55, 25, and 22% of dry wt of ESM, respectively. Also uranium uptake 30% of that of ESM. Experiments suggested that ESM is promising to use for the purpose of removal/recovery of metals and water pollution control.

Molecular dynamics study of A18B lennard-jones clusters

Low temperature structures, melting and evaporation temperatures of A₁₈B clusters with Lennard-Jones interactions have been studied using Molecular Dynamics simulations for different values of the parameters representing (a) the size ratio between A and B atoms, and (b) the ratio between the strengths of the A - B and A - A interactions.This paper was originally submitted in connection with the 2nd. Int. Conference on Atoic and Nuclear Clusters held in Santorini from 28. June–2. July 1993 and is published here as a regular article after an independent refereeing procedure according to the standards of Z. Phys. D

Lehmer pairs of zeros,the de Bruijn-Newman constant Λ, and the Riemann Hypothesis

We give here a rigorous formulation for a pair of consecutive simple positive zeros of the functionH ₀ (which is closely related to the Riemann -function) to be a Lehmer pair of zeros ofH ₀. With this formulation, we establish that each such pair of zeros gives a lower bound for the de Bruijn-Newman constant (where the Riemann Hypothesis is equivalent to the assertion that 0). We also numerically obtain the following new lower bound for :

Convex polynomial and spline approximation in C[−1, 1]

We prove that a convex functionf C[–1, 1] can be approximated by convex polynomialsp _n of degreen at the rate of ₃(f, 1/n). We show this by proving that the error in approximatingf by C² convex cubic splines withn knots is bounded by ₃(f, 1/n) and that such a spline approximant has anL third derivative which is bounded by n³₃(f, 1/n). Also we prove that iff C²[–1, 1], then it is approximable at the rate ofn ^–2 (f, 1/n) and the two estimates yield the desired result.Communicated by Ronald A. DeVore.     

Gradient Young measures generated by sequences in Sobolev spaces

Oscillatory properties of a weak convergent sequence of functions bounded inL ^p , 1 ≤p ≤ ∞, may be summarized by the parametrized measure it generates. When such a measure is generated by the gradients of a sequence of functions bounded inH ^1,p , it must have special properties. The purpose of this paper is to characterize such parametrized measures as the ones that obey Jensen’s inequality for all quasiconvex functions with the appropriate growth at infinity. We have found subtle differences between the casesp < ∞ andp = ∞. A consequence is that any measure determined by biting convergence is in fact generated by a sequence convergent in a stronger sense.
