Experimental verification of the gas-hydraulic analogy with reference to the dam-break problem

The results of an experimental study of dam-break waves for both a dry and a flooded bottom in the lower pool are compared with the first approximation of shallow-water theory. It is shown that this approximation adequately describes the height and velocity of the hydraulic jump in the lower pool for a flooded bottom, does not describe the undulations, and is inconsistent with the experimental data on the perturbation propagation velocity in the upper and, for a dry bottom, in the lower pool.Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, 2004, pp. 143–152. DNA damage induced by laser-hematoporphyrin derivative

Irradiation caused DNA single-strand breaks in S180 cells in the presence oflaser-hematoporphyrin derivative(HPD).The number of single strand breaks was 3.69 ×10~(10)break dolton~(-1).The analysis of base composition of DNA showed that the effect of laser-HPDirradiation on guanine was the highest,being 5-12 times as high as those of the three others(adenine,cytosine and thymine).It was different from the nature of DNA damage caused by γ-ray irradiation.     

UTRA/FDD RF Transceiver Requirements

Unified RF requirements are derived for an UMTS Terrestrial RadioAccess/Frequency Division Duplex (UTRA/FDD) compliant mobile transceiver. Aset of transceiver requirements are proposed with consideration to systemissues including duplex aspects. From these design-compatible requirements areproposed for each functional block in the transceiver.     

On the discharge characteristic at the dam site after dam break

A review of the information available in the literature is given, and new experimental data on the depth and discharge at the dam site after a total and a partial dam break are presented. The correlation functions near intermittency in a one-dimensional Piecewise parabolic map

Piecewise parabolic maps constitute a family of maps in the fully developed chaotic state and depending on a parameter that can be smoothly tuned to a weakly intermittent situation. Approximate analytic expressions are derived for the corresponding correlation functions. These expressions produce power-law decay at intermittency and a crossover from power-law decay to exponential decay below intermittency. It is shown that the scaling functions and the exponent of the power law depend on the kind of the correlations.

Dynamic properties of the Monte Carlo method in statistical mechanics

By means of the Monte Carlo sampling technique the equilibrium thermodynamics of fluids and magnets can be calculated numerically. We show that the questions of convergence and accuracy of this method can be understood in terms of the dynamics of the appropriate stochastic model. Also, we discuss to what extent various choices of transition probabilities lead to different dynamic properties of the system. As examples of applications, we consider Ising and Heisenberg spin systems. The numerical results about the dynamic correlation functions are compared to simple approximations taken from the theory of the kinetic Ising model.     

Separation of histamine and its metabolites using glass capillary gas chromatography and a nitrogen detector

Complete separation of the TMS derivatives of histamine, 1-methyl histamine and 3-methyl histamine was achieved in two minutes in a 7 m × 0.25 mm column coated with SP 2250. Using NPD, histamine was detectable at levels as low as 20 pg. This offers a rapid, sensitive procedure with potential for clinical diagnosis and food analysis.     

High sensitivity CW-cavity ring down spectroscopy of CO2 near 1.35 μm (II): New observations and line intensities modeling

In a previous contribution [Kassi S, Song KF, Campargue A. High sensitivity CW-cavity ring down spectroscopy of ¹²CO₂ near 1.35 μm (I): line positions. JQSRT 110 (2009) 1801-1814], the line positions analysis of the high sensitivity absorption spectrum of carbon dioxide has been reported in the 7123-7793 cm⁻¹ region. In this second contribution, the spectral region investigated by CW-cavity ring down spectroscopy has been extended up to 7917 cm⁻¹. It added about 400 lines to our previous list of about 2500 transitions. These additional lines include transitions belonging to six newly observed ¹²C¹⁶O₂ bands for which we provide the spectroscopic parameters. Over the whole 7123-7917 cm⁻¹ region, the accurate intensities of about 2900 lines belonging to four isotopologues (¹²C¹⁶O₂, ¹³C¹⁶O₂, ¹⁶O¹²C¹⁸O and ¹⁶O¹²C¹⁷O) were retrieved with an average accuracy of 3%. Intensity values range between 1.2×10⁻²⁹ and 4.1×10⁻²⁵ cm/mol. Compared to the present version of the carbon dioxide spectroscopic databank recently adopted for the HITRAN database, important deviations were evidenced for some weak bands of the main isotopologue. The CW-CRDS intensity data relative to a total of 46 ¹²C¹⁶O₂ bands together with selected intensity information available in the literature for nine bands have been fitted simultaneously using the effective operators approach. The ΔP=11 set of the ¹²C¹⁶O₂ effective dipole moment parameters has been refined leading to a much better agreement with the measured intensity values. In addition, the ΔP=10 effective dipole moment parameters of the ¹⁶O¹²C¹⁸O minor isotopologue were determined for the first time. The obtained results will help to improve the carbon dioxide spectroscopic databank (CDSD).
