NMR studies on a palladium(II) complex containing an incompletely coordinated facultative pentadentate Schiff base ligand

Palladium(II) dichloride reacts with 1,10‐bis(2‐pyrrolyl)‐2,5,9‐triaza‐1,9‐decadiene to give a [Pd(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)]Cl complex in which the ligand is four‐coordinated, leaving one pyrrole group dangling. By using COSY, gHSQC, gHMBC connectivities and NOE experiments it has been concluded that one linkage isomer exists in DMSO solution, in spite of the fact that different sets of N atoms of potentially pentadentate ligand might be involved in coordination, and that the three chelate rings in the complex cation are arranged in a sequence: five‐membered, six‐membered, five‐membered which is different from that (5–5–6) found by x‐ray studies on the related [Ni(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)]Cl compound. NMR studies allowed an unambiguous assignment of all ¹H and ¹³C NMR resonances for the complex. Results of x‐ray structural analysis of [Pd(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)](CH₃COO)H₂O supported the five‐membered, six‐membered, five‐membered ring sequence in the [Pd(C₁₅H₂₀N₅)]⁺ complex cation and show an E (trans) orientation of the dangling pyrrole group with respect to the metal center. Modification of multiwalled carbon nanotubes by carboxy groups and determination of the degree of functionalization

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were modified by carboxy groups. Four independent methods for the determination of the degree of functionalization of the surface were proposed: ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, titrimetry, and fluorimetry. The first two methods show the total content of carboxy groups in the sample, and the latter two methods give information about the content of the surface groups only. A categorical characterization of varieties

A simple, direct proof of the following characterization of varieties of (finitary) algebras is presented: a cocomplete category is equivalent to a variety iff it has an algebraic generator, i.e., a regular generator which is exactly projective and finitely generated. This improves somewhat a recent restatement, due to Pedicchio and Wood, of the classical characterization theorem of Lawvere. A bijective correspondence between algebraic theories and algebraic generators is established.     

α-Fe2O3-In2O3 mixed oxide nanoparticles synthesized under hydrothermal supercritical conditions

α-Fe₂O₃-In₂O₃ mixed oxide nanoparticles system has been synthesized by hydrothermal supercritical and postannealing route, starting with (1−x)Fe(NO₃)₃·9H₂O·xIn(NO₃)₃·5H₂O aqueous solution (x=0-1). X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy have been used to study the phase structure and substitutions in the nanosized samples. The concentration regions for the existence of the solid solutions in the α-Fe₂O₃-In₂O₃ nanoparticle system together with the solubility limits of In³⁺ ions in the hematite lattice and of Fe³⁺ ions in the cubic In₂O₃ structure have been evidenced. In general, the substitution level is considerably lower than the nominal concentration x. A justification of the processes leading to the formation of iron and indium phases in the investigated supercritical hydrothermal system has been given.

Approximation of a laminated microstructure for a rotationally invariant,double well energy density

Summary. We give error estimates for the approximation of a laminated microstructure which minimizes the energy for a rotationally invariant, double well energy density . We present error estimates for the convergence of the deformation in the convergence of directional derivatives of the deformation in the “twin planes,” the weak convergence of the deformation gradient, the convergence of the microstructure (or Young measure) of the deformation gradients, and the convergence of nonlinear integrals of the deformation gradient. Lower bounds for the discrepancy of triples of inversive congruential pseudorandom numbers with power of two modulus

This paper deals with the inversive congruential method with power of two modulusm for generating uniform pseudorandom numbers. Statistical independence properties of the generated sequences are studied based on the distribution of triples of successive pseudorandom numbers. It is shown that there exist parameters in the inversive congruential method such that the discrepancy of the corresponding point sets in the unit cube is of an order of magnitude at leastm ^–1/3. The method of proof relies on a detailed analysis of certain rational exponential sums.     

Smoothing minimally supported frequency wavelets: Part II

The main purpose of this paper is to give a procedure to “mollify” the low-pass filters of a large number ofMinimally Supported Frequency (MSF) wavelets so that the smoother functions obtained in this way are also low-pass filters for an MRA. Hence, we are able to approximate (in the L ² -norm) MSF wavelets by wavelets with any desired degree of smoothness on the Fourier transform side. Although the MSF wavelets we consider are bandlimited, this may not be true for their smooth approximations. This phenomena is related to the invariant cycles under the transformation x ↦2x (mod2π). We also give a characterization of all low-pass filters for MSF wavelets. Throughout the paper new and interesting examples of wavelets are described.
