Sulfonated polypropylene ionomers

Polypropylene ionomers have been prepared by sulfonation of copolymers of propene and 7 methyl, 1-6 octadiene, followed by neutralization to cesium salts. Both WAXS and SAXS were used to study the morphology of the samples, while their thermal properties were studied by DSC and their mechanical properties by DMTA. The sulfonation process is shown to cause a further drop in crystallinity in addition to the effect of comonomer incorporation. Ion clustering is observed when the extent of sulfonation is high enough, the limit being dependent on the copolymer composition. The ion pairs which are not incorporated into the cluster cause a small-angle upturn in the WAXS pattern. The mechanical properties are strongly affected by the drop in crystallinity, but may be partly recovered due to ion clustering. No disruption of the ion clusters is observed before thermal decomposition of the polymer.     

Easy α- to β-migration of an enol moiety on a pyrrole ring

Functionalized pyrrolic enols, 2-(2,2-dicyano-1-hydroxyethenyl)-1-methylpyrroles, synthesized from 2-ethenylpyrroles by a nucleophilic SEt-OH exchange, upon heating (75-142 °C) are readily rearranged to their 3-isomers in near to quantitative yield. The inter or intramolecular auto-protonation of a pyrrole ring by the acidic enol hydroxyl to form a mesomeric pyrrolium cation or zwitterion is suggested to be a key step in the rearrangement.     

Low-temperature bath/coupled-capillary/sweeping-micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography for the separation of naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde-derivatized dopamine and norepinephrine

The use of a low-temperature (0 degrees C) bath-assisted coupled capillary for the separation of naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA)-derivatized dopamine and norepinephrine using the sweeping-micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) mode is described. In this technique, a capillary consisting of two portions with different inside diameters is used. Therefore, the field strength inside the capillary is different. Hence, the electrophoretic migration velocities of the analytes and the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) also are different. Furthermore, when a portion of the capillary (wide portion, used for sweeping) is immersed in a low-temperature bath, the viscosity of the buffer and the retention factor of the analytes inside are increased. Thus, not only are the interactions between the SDS micelles and the analytes increased, but the SDS-analytes also move more slowly. As a result, a more complete separation can be achieved, even when the sample injection volume is large, up to approximately 2 microL. In general, when the volume of an injected sample is larger, the effects of sweeping and separation would become insufficient, especially when the retention values (k) of the analytes are quite different. However, this limitation can be improved when the low-temperature bath/coupled capillary/sweeping-MEKC mode is used.     

Synthesis and properties of functional derivatives ofN′-phosphoryl- andN′-phosphonoyldiazeneN-oxides; molecular structure ofN-(2,2-dimethyl-5-nitro-1,3-dioxan-5-yl)-N′-[methoxy(phenyl)phosphoryl]diazeneN-oxide

Methods for the synthesis of polyfunctionalN-phosphoryl- andN-phosphonoyldiazeneN-oxides containing hydroxyl, acetoxyl, and nitrate groups, and dibromoallyl and dibromopropyl fragments have been developed. The molecular structure ofN-(2,2-dimethyl-5-nitro-1,3-dioxan-5-yl)-N-[methoxy(phenyl)phosphoryl)diazeneN-oxide was established by X-ray structural analysis.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Synthesis and reactivity of thieno[2,3-<Emphasis Type="Italic">b</Emphasis>]pyridine-2,3-diamines

It has been established that the interaction of N¹-(2-hydroxyphenylmethylthieno[2,3-b]pyrid-3-yl)arylamides with hydrazine hydrate leads to thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2,3-diamines. Observations on the swelling characteristics of the zwitterionic hydrogel of poly(1-3-sulfopropyl)-2-vinyl-pyridinium-betaine hydrogel

Samples of poly[1-(3-sulfopropyl)-2-vinyl-pyridinium-betaine] (PSPV) have been synthesized to high conversion by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution of the zwitterionic monomer SPV with several concentrations of the crosslinker N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA). The densities of the resultant xerogels increased regularly with the content of MBA. Hydrogels obtained by swelling them in water and aqueous KSCN solution were examined by gravimetric and dimensional analysis. The water contents increased with decreasing content of MBA, the value of 92.7 wt% at the lowest MBA content being higher than that for other zwitterionic hydrogels. Enhanced swelling occurred in 1 M aq. KSCN at each MBA content, the total swelling being 98.1 wt% at the lowest crosslinker content. Swelling increased with increasing temperature. An approximate procedure to formulating swelling equilibrium in term of the volume fraction of water in hydrogel, in conjunction with the van’t Hoff equation, yields a small positive value for the enthalpy of swelling. This is compared with values derived similarly for other hydrogels.     

Chemical studies on the anobiidae: Sex pheromone of the drugstore beetle, stegobium paniceum (L.) (coleoptera)

Chemical an spectroscopic evidence is presented to show that 2,3-dihydro-2,3,5-trimethyl-6-(1-methyl-2-oxobutyl)-4H-pyran-4-one (10) is the sex pheromone produced by the female drugstore beetle, Stegobium paniceum L.     

Effect of conformational control of chiral oxazaborolidine by π-π stacking interaction of a pentafluorophenyl group toward asymmetric borane reduction

A pentafluorophenyl group can act as a stereo-controlling group in oxazaborolidine-catalyzed asymmetric borane reduction through intramolecular π-π stacking interaction with a phenyl group. The intramolecular π-π interaction in oxazaborolidine bearing pentafluorophenyl group is confirmed by calculations and ¹H NMR study. The interaction affects the enantioselectivity of the asymmetric reduction of acetophenone while the extent is small.     

Transformed steroids

A preparative method for 9a-hydroxylation of ⁵-3-hydroxysteroids using the fungi ofCircinella sp. 10Kh-1220 not capable of modifying theA ring has been developed. It is established that the yields of the main and the side products greatly depend on the transformation conditions, mycelium age, and the structure of the steroid substrate. Under the optimal transformation conditions novel 9-hydroxysubstituted derivatives of androstenolone, pregnenolone, 16-dehydro-16,17-epoxy-, and-16-methoxypregnenolone have been obtained in 36–80 % yields.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Deoxypegan-1-one derivatives. synthesis and borohydride reduction of 3-[(E)-arylmethylidene]-3,9-dihydropyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazolin-1(2H)-ones

3-[(E)-Arylmethylidene]-3,9-dihydropyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazolin-1(2H)-ones were prepared by reaction of quinazolyl-2-propionic acid hydrochloride with aromatic aldehydes in acetic anhydride in the presence of Et₃N. 3-[(E)-Arylmethylidene]-1,2,3,9-tetrahydropyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazolin-1-ols were formed by reduction of the 3-arylidene derivatives with sodium borohydride in methanol, readily lost water when heated with acids, and were converted into 3-[(E)-arylmethylidene]-3,9-dihydropyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazolines. __________ Translated from Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 5, pp. 463–467, September–October, 2006.
